A paean to South Boston
I just moved out of Southie for Medford (now I get to try all the ethic places in Malden-yum!). I had one of the best scones ever at American Provisions. Not sure where they get them. Cafe Arpeggio makes it's own ice cream. It has a different texture than I'm used to which kind of put me off but never stopped me from trying it. Sorry I'm missing the new Foodies because it would have been very convenient for me. Tried Local 149 twice and was definitely underwhelmed both times. Tried Wolfie's a few times and it is OK. I saw that they revamped their menu-hope they kept the onion strings. The pizza/sub shops on W. Broadway are OK-nothing to write home about anywhere.
North End Boston
You may want to search this board for Italian food. I believe most chowhounders find the best Italian food outside of the North End. Depending on what type of Italian you're looking for you may want to check out Gran Gusto, Trattoria Toscana, Vinny's at night.
"d-bar'-vous, all over again!
I'm moving out of South Boston after 6 years and this is one of the places I didn't get to. Not that I'm moving that far (Medford) but I don't have a car. Luckily I have friends who live in the area so i can come back to try it.
Just back from New Orleans-wonderful!
Lamb sliders sound delicious! I was trying to be a little healthy with the fish tacos-shoulda gone "unhealthy",
Thanks!
Just back from New Orleans-wonderful!
Thanks to threads on this board I had a wonderful eating experience in New Orleans-even though I only got to 3 of the places I had planned on.
First off I stayed at the Balcony Guest House on Royal in the Marigny. My room wasn't anything to write home about but it was clean and the folks downstairs in Schiro's were awesome-especially Steve who works evenings.
Breakfast was included in my stay but it started too late for me (9:30-10:30) so I just walked around the block to Cake Cafe. Enjoyed their breakfast sandwich on a biscuit one morning, cheese danish another and the veggie omelette the final time. Very fresh, free coffee refills.
Lunch on my first and 3rd day were at Crescent City Brewhouse. My first time having shrimp and grits and I could have licked that plate! it may not have been the best version around but for me it was deelish! The 2nd time there I had their baked oyster app (6 oysters with 3 different toppings) but wasn't super impressed.
Lunch on Thursday was the Creole prix fixe special at Commander's Palace. OMG! Naturally I got seated by the waiter's station because I was solo and female but the wonderful service made up for it. Turtle soup, pork tenderloin with onion strings and mushrooms and cracklins and what all-lordy lordy! And the Creole bread pudding souffle for dessert. Thought I'd have to walk all the way back to Boston after that meal!
Also had 2 dinners and brunch at Schiro's/Julia's Little India. The sag paneer was meh but a tossed salad another night was fresh and huge. Brunch was eggs and grits and sausage-everything done perfectly. And it was included in my room charge although $6.95 for that plus juice and coffee is an excellent price!
On my final night I walked down Frenchman looking for some music. My 2nd stop happened to be 3 Muses where I had a wonderful mojito and mediocre fish tacos.
Loved the city and am very glad I finally made it there. And with any luck I'll be able to return some day. In the meantime my photos and food memories will have to sustain me!
Boston restaurants offering complimentary drop off and pick up service
I know there's a shuttle service from the South Bay shopping center to the Andrew Square Red Line stop. Not sure where else the shuttle goes or how late it goes.
The T is a good way to go if they can access it. In Southie you have Cafe Polonia and 224 Boston within walking distance of Andrew Square and Franklin Southie, Amrheins, Owl Station and Mul's Diner (breakfast) within walking distance of Broadway station
New Bedford?
A friend and I are doing a roadtrip to New Bedford early in the day on Super Bowl Sunday. We're looking for a local joint to eat Portugese food and drink beer and wine.
Any suggestions? Are Rivet St and Cove St the places to be?
New Bedford?
Heading there on a road trip with a friend on Super Bowl Sunday (early in the day) and we're looking for a place to get some local atmosphere and Portugese food.
So far I've come up with Antonio's, Madeira Cafe and Fresca Grill. Looking further it seems like Cove Rd (or street?) and Rivet St. are the places to be......... Looking for something with a beer and wine license as well.
Thanks!
The Otherside is closing?
Yeah, apparently the landlord was kicking them out before the deal with Bowl and Board even went through. Haw haw to the landlord!
Catering/Take Out Recommendations near Mass General Hospital...
For Thai food-try Similan (spelling?) in Cambridge. You can access their menu via their sister restaurant Brown Sugar.
Inexpensive dinner very near Lyric Theatre
Geoffrey's Cafe on Berkeley (or is it Clarendon?).
A good take on Papa Gino's
MGH makes Papa Gino's pizza in their cafeteria and I LOVE the sausage!
November 2011 Winter Markets, CSAs, Farm Stands & Other Fresh, Local Sources
Looks like SOWA is a done deal. Sundays November 13 to April 29, right next to the Vintage Market. Nice to have these year round options!
Steak Tips
A vote for the steak tips at JJ Foley's on E. Berkeley. The garlic chicken wings are pretty awesome too!
Dorchester dinner recs?
Finally made it to Tavolo this summer. Had the Icarus polenta starter that was out of this world-with wild mushrooms and marsala sauce. My DC had the wild mushroom pizza which was also wonderful-even when reheated the next day. Can't remember my main so it wasn't as memorable I guess. But a guy next to us says he orders the same thing every time-the spaghetti and meatballs. I've heard good things about those meatballs.

Steak Tips
Are you kidding? New Bridge is actually more "upscale" now than when I started going there back in the 80's but it's still a neighborhood place. More a "joint" than a "dive".
RIP Quietman
Glad I made it in there before it closed. Took my brother for the steak tips but IIRC he liked New Bridge's better.
SOWA Winter Farmer's Market
Hmmmmmm, so my new Sunday routine can be: gym, farmer's market, brunch at home, cleaning and laundry rest of the day with breaks for Pats game...............
Need suggestion for Thursday (sept 1) for 7-8 people after our civil ceremony at Castle Island.
No idea if these fit your criteria but they're worth checking out: Cafe Portobello (small local Italian joint) on East Broadway in South Boston, Sel de la Terre near the Aquarium, the new chain steak house type place where Jimmy's Harborside used to be. I'm not sure of the name but maybe someone else can chime in.

Recommendations for old school/divey/gritty Boston spots - restaurants and bars (w/ or w/o food)
Ditto New Bridge, JJ Foley and Santarpios. Also, Durgin Park, Cantina Italiana (for the retro North End vibe-as long as they haven't renovated since I was last there!).

Are you talking about the Toscano Restaurant on Charles St? If so, the food there is pretty meh. Nice location though.

Local 149 in Southie Flavorful Choice for Summer Supper & Beer
I'm not sure. There were a couple of guys hanging around on the front stoop but don't know if they were valet parkers. We actually found a non-resident spot about a block away.
Local 149 in Southie Flavorful Choice for Summer Supper & Beer
Went last night for the first time and based on that I'd say the noise is always that loud! Why do restaurants do that??? Anyway, my friend had the taco salad as well and her reaction was the same as yours. Way small. And what do you do with the red cabbage shell? I had the salt sandwich, er, the ham and cheese sandwich. Could not taste the ham because of the overwhelming saltiness of it. And it came with presalted fries! The best part was the little bits of pickled raw veggies they added as a garnish. I could have had a side of those! We may go back some day but neither of us will be in a rush.
Best old school Italian in the North Side
Let me first preface my recommendation by saying that Amici restaurant is owned by the mother of a co-worker and I have only eaten there once as part of a big group. We had a selection of appetizers and entrees and I was pleasantly surprised by how fresh tasting everything was. The menu does say every dish is made to order. It isn't really a traditional red sauce restaurant but they have a pretty traditional menu with lots of fish/seafood options.
They are on the outskirts of the North End but get the Boston Garden crowd so can get jammed up when an event is going on there. Probably best to go after 7PM. And they are not open every day-call to make sure they are open.

Amrheins
It's good for one visit to check out the beautiful wood bar and the antique beer tap. And I like their mac n cheese.
Ducali Pizzaria serves surprisingly good pizza....who knew?!
I work in the area three (!) always forget about this place. Plus I don't hear about it much so wasn't sure if it was good or not. Will have to try some night after work. Thanks!
