Where can I buy affordable fresh local fish?

The Costco near SFO had fresh wild Copper River salmon today; whole minus the head for $5.99/lb and fillets for $13.99/lb. Today was the first day for the whole fish stand along with the jumbo Tiger prawns from Vietnam.

Bought a couple of whole salmon and each weighed ~6.5 lbs.

Local Chinook Salmon in San Francisco (for the 2012 season)?

They've been feeding on krill which also gives them a brighter-than-usual red color.

Off the boats at Pillar Point Harbor.

Where can I buy affordable fresh local fish?

The Pillar Pt Harbor hotline mentioned salmon being sold off the boats on Saturday 5/5. Don't know the prices though.

I'm not much of a cheese afficionado, but I really enjoyed them at GD and would recommend that as one of your choices. They have a nice selection served table-side.

GO in South San Francisco

I went there earlier this week (after the grand opening). The store does feel more cramped due to space.

I checked out the wine section and the selection was much different from what I saw at Berkeley & Oakland. There were a couple of wines that were sold in the other stores like the Deep Sea Chardonnay and the Bixler Red Wine. Most of the wines here were in the $5.99 and up range with very few $2.99 - $3.99.

Bought a 2006 EOS Port (375ml) and a 2007 Sumac Ridge Chardonnay from British Columbia, both were $5.99 each.

Other non-wines deals:

5 lb bag of red potatoes for $1.50
Broccoli bunches 69 cents

now that Oakland's B- Restaurant is closed... [CORRECTED BELOW- RESTAURANT IS OPEN]

How about SF for the $1 oysters?

Grocery Outlet Wine Sale 3/7-3/11 - What are you buying?

I was tempted to try the 2007 Pacific Rim Dry Riesling. However, when I tried it in previous vintages, it did not have the dark gold color like the ones I saw at GO which may indicate being too old (or cooked) for a wine of this genre, so I passed. Now I'm glad I did. Thanks for the review.

Grocery Outlet March, 2012

Stopped by the Oakland GO and there wasn't anything noteworthy.

If you still want Italian, this place is good and close to SFO:

Tommy's Joynt: One I can check off the list [San Francisco]

By coincidence, I stopped here for lunch today and had the Wednesday special which was the broiled ground chuck steak sandwich on a sourdough roll. Comes w/ mashed potatoes, mushrooms, and plenty of onions. Meat was moist and the onions and mushrooms complemented the potatoes. The rolls was a bit tough though.

The lamb shank special is on Thursdays.

February 2012, Grocery Outlet - Is it worth it anymore?

According to the GO Facebook page, the South SF location will open on March 24th.

Who serves the most impressive Chinese Banquet for under $500 per table?

IIRC, Hong Kong Lounge on Geary has a couple of small private rooms.

Recommendation for Small Chinese Banquet in Oakland

With Silver Dragon closing soon, and Legendary Palace being a bit too expensive, I need recommendations on a Chinese restaurant in Oakland that can handle 40-50 people.

I rarely eat in Oakland Chinatown, and notice most of the places are too small to handle a large group.

As ML8000 stated, the crabs don't eat after their caught (unless they eat each other), so they'll be losing weight and mass sitting in those stale water tanks.

In addition, the pots aren't stuffed with the jumbo sized ones from the beginning of the season. Many commercial crabbers locally have pulled their gear since it's not worth the fuel/labor/bait costs to pull up pots with only a half dozen or fewer legal crabs per pot.

Grocery Outlet, January 2012

It's about time they opened the SSF store. It was supposed to open Fall 2011 and then pushed back to "early 2012." Can't wait to finally see it open in a month or so,

Seeking Chinese bakery in Oakland or Millbrae, long hours a big plus.

There is a SOGO bakery in Burlingame at the border of Millbrae in the large shopping center with the CVS & Lunardi's:

La Tur is back at Costco

None at the SFO Costco.

Beijing/Northern Chinese in Sunset

I went to a dinner at Dong Bei Mama a couple months ago. Everything was good, but the eggplant dish. The pork leg was tasty and they do fish very well. If I went back again, I would perhaps order several of the smaller hot and cold appetizers.

For a 2-pounder, I steam it for 15 minutes and it has never been undercooked. However, I keep the flame on high.

This applies to this region: On a charter boat, the limit is 6 per person (On a private boat, you are allowed 10 per person).

And you do need a fishing license on a crab-only trip which is $14 for a one-day license or $44 for the annual. I know the Huli Cat and New Captain Pete out of Pillar Pt Harbor do the crab-only trips which are $50 typically:

I was on a charter boat on Sunday and when the pots were pulled up, the average was about 12-14 crabs per pot. Some of the pots appeared to have been raided overnight since the bait jars were missing. They were rebaited and soaked for 5-6 hours while we went rockfishing at the Farallon Islands. We retrieved the same pots and the average increased to 20-25 crabs for that short time period but some were undersized and were thrown back. Overall, the sizes of the crab were expectedly smaller than what we were getting prior to the crabbers' price strike. However, they were still tasty and everybody went home happy with limits of crab and rockfish + 17 lingcod. Here's some video of the rockfishing and the crab pots being pulled up:

$3.99/lb for live crabs at 99 Ranch in Foster City. About a dozen people waiting in line just for the crabs.

2011 - Eggnog has arrived

Saw this in this week's Lunardi's specials ad ($5.99 for 52 oz). Supposed to be low fat and has fewer calories and lower cholesterol.

Anyone try it? I'd buy if it tasted any good.
