Zabar's Lobster Salad has no Lobster
I went today to buy "Shrimp salad" from the new Fairway on East 86th. Guess what the fourth ingredient on the label said, right below SHRIMP SALAD; Imitation Crabmeat!. Isn't that a kind of deceit? At least crawdads are in the lobster family. But there is no way surimi is related to shrimp.

Is Santa Fe Restaurant on W 71st still open?
Santa Fe has been closed for quite some time. Bill Telepan's restaurant now occupies the site.
GIANDUIA chocolate
I was in Whole Foods-the new branch at Bowery/Houston yesterday and they are selling Valrhona gianduia chocolate for $13.99 per pound. It is also available at Dean and Deluca.
Chinese Chive Cakes at any time?
I've been getting them at Grand Harmony for years. They are generally available after 10 AM from the take-out counter. They are the best I've found (except for Chinatown Brasserie where they are very expensive and only available at sit-down meals). They are stuffed with Chinese garlic chives, shrimp, pork fat and sometimes delicious crisp bits of water-chestnuts. They are a round puck-shape and fried-somewhat, although deliciously greasy. I was taught to call them giao chiow bao- pronouned (GUY-OH CHOW BAH-0W). The ever-so-reasonable price for them just went up to about $1.90 for three delicious pieces.
Have you eaten at the new Lobster Bar in Soho?
The former sous-chef for Rebecca Charles at Pearl Oyster Bar has now opened his own place at 222 Lafayette Street (below Spring Street) in Soho. Has anyone been there to eat yet? I looked at the menu on line and I am particularly interested to know how the New England Clam Chowder is, how good is the lobster roll, and, most importantly, has anyone eater the fried Ipswich clams? Are the fried clams good, with bellies? or strips? And how pricey are they for how large a portion? Thanks.
