Father's Day Brunch Ideas
Hi everyone, my father loves the all you can eat brunches and wants to go to one for Father's Day. Does anyone know of any in the Broward/South Palm Beach area that actually puts out good food? Any ideas are appreciated. Thanks.

Banned?? I had no idea about that! Is it banned in all of California? I hope not, I've been looking forward to the torchon at FL for about 10 years now.

Not yet Teacher Foodie. We're heading out in the beginning of August. I've taken all of the recs from here and from some friends and I'm pretty happy with the restaurants, but we're still trying to find a hotel in SF. We want somewhere that's not too far from The Wharf and/or the mission, with a good reputation. We'd like to keep the rate to $200/night or less so if you have any ideas for places you recommend, then we'd love to hear them. Thanks!

Didn't know about this area but it looks fun. Thanks for the suggestion!

Honestly I'd love to go to Gary Danko but I just don't think we can budget it. Something to look forward to on a future trip I guess.

These are great suggestions and really help us with some more ideas. Thanks a lot for the input. Is Fisherman's Wharf big enough to spend the day at or is it something that can be done with in a few hours? Japantown and Chinatown both interest us, is there one that is more interesting for out of towners than the other? Thanks again.

We'd love to Dustin but we don't really know much more about the area. Would you mind making some suggestions for us?

It sounds like either would work for us, but since we're coming out to California we'll probably try La Taqueria. I definitely want to get in some Mexican while we're out there. Those prices are definitely a little high for what we're interested in. We'll still stop by and check out Bi-Rite Market but is there another place in the area to get some picnic food?

Thanks Robert, we'll scratch Hank's

We've taken what many of you have helped us with and updated our itinerary. We've decided to stay one more day in SF and one less in Napa. Please feel free to comment on anything we've chosen. We still don't really know the area so if you see that we've set ourselves up to run back and forth on a particular day, please let us know that as well. We're still open to any and all suggestions as almost every place we've selected has been from word of mouth and not from personal experience of our own. Also, my wife mentioned wanting to spend some time by the Golden Gate Bridge, perhaps riding bikes over it and getting a bite to eat. Please let me know if you see anywhere in the itinerary that I may be able to slide this in. Thanks you all for your help.

Thanks for you reply. I thought I had read about a few wineries that offer sandwiches and tapas on site, but I didn't write them down. If you or anyone else happens to remember some that are worth checking out, please comment as we would appreciate it.
I've had a few people suggest to skip Oxbow since we're already doing the Ferry Bldg and to skip Gott's, so my guess is that we probably will end up skipping them and ask some locals for lunch suggestions.

Thank you for your suggestions, those sound like the type of wineries we would enjoy. Can you tell me a little more about what you mean by Darioush feeling commercial? More info will help us better decide if it's one we end up checking out or perhaps saving for a later trip. Thanks again.

The caramel ice cream at Bi-Rite is one on my top 5 things that I'm excited about out there (along with the porchetta sandwich, the FL, and a couple others) so I'm glad you're recommending it. Thanks!

I didn't know about Knead Patisserie but it looks GREAT! I'm definitely adding that as one of our stops. I also like the idea of visiting HS and Bi-Rite. Yeah, it's probably ice cream overkill, but it's a special occasion so why not go all out? Are they close enough to walk from one to the other?
Itinerary for our honeymoon in SF/Napa. Thoughts?
Thanks for the reply. Even though it's a lot of money, I think we are just going to go for it if we can secure the FL reservation. I don't know how long it will be before we can get back to that side of the country and I don't want to regret not going there. I also really like the idea of the taqueria crawl. Do they all have the same owner? What do you prefer at each one? Thanks again for your help!

Thanks for the idea about the picnic area, that's the kind of thing my wife is going to love. Is Delores Park within walking distance to Tartine and Bi-Rite?

Thanks for the input and for the info about Redd. I have this long list of places to try and I didn't always remember to mark where they were. I'm glad you're recommending Zuni over Gitane, I've more interested in their menu, especially the roast chicken that I keep reading about. Thanks again and please don't hesitate to comment on any additional recommendations.

That's a great idea and a perfect way to put together a lot of the places we want to try. Thanks for the suggestion Robert!

I know most places will have sorbet but I read that Scream's is supposed to be better than most so we were going to try and make it there, but if you have another suggestion besides Scream and Bi-rite please let us know. We love dessert so we don't mind leaving the restaurant for a place that has something more unique or interesting to offer. Thanks for you help.

After researching the area a little and reading tons of posts on CH we have a pretty good idea of what we'd like to visit while we're on our honeymoon. Please give us any opinions/advice on not only the places we've picked, but on ones we may be missing out on. Our goal with these restaurants and activities is to focus on delicious, fun, and interesting places that are different from what we can find in South Florida.

Please understand that I haven't yet mapped this out so I'm sure that right now the order that these are in may be counterproductive, but I just want to find the places that we most want to visit and then worry about efficiently routing them later. We're also considering spending one more day in SF instead on Napa, but we're not sure yet. We are somewhat torn on attempting the French Laundry. We have friends that will be able to secure our reservations, but if we were to forgo FL we'd have more money to enjoy some other local places we were interested in (Redd, Gary Danko, Atelier Crenn, etc...). FL has always been sort of a bucket list thing for me, but if it's not worth it than I'd like to know, so if you've been to FL and have an opinion, than we'd appreciate that as well. Also, if you know of anything fun and/or romantic we can do in between eating than that would be great too. Thanks again, it's people like you taking the time to help us that are going to make this an amazing honeymoon for us!
Floridians coming to Cali for the first time.
Looks like a great reason to get to Napa early on Saturday. We love markets like these. Thanks for the suggestion!

Excellent points. Although we differ in our opinion of crabs, we can completely agree on produce. It's one of the main reasons I'm excited about this trip. I hear people often talk about how great a tomato or fennel can be when grown properly and I'm excited to taste as much local fresh produce as possible. At the advice of this thread we are also looking at getting a driver. Just wondering, if we only do 2-3 wineries in a day, is a driver still worth it or should we lean towards a cab? I don't know how expensive fares are out there but we would attempt to plan for places in similar locations to save on money. Thanks again!

Awesome recommendations! You pretty much nailed every place we are looking at (Gary Danko, Benu, Redd) and the porchetta sandwich looks amazing so we'll definitely be looking for that. We are going to the French Laundry if our reservations go through. It's a lot of money, but it's a bucket list thing that we'll regret if we pass it up. We'll also try and check out the oxbow market as well. How many wineries is enough? I know this is a question that has a different answer for everyone, but in your opinion, how many can you do in one day before you've either had enough to drink, or you just want a change of setting? I was thinking 2-3 in a day is sufficient, but I'm looking for more opinions. Thanks!

Thanks for the reply. We're staying at the Best Western Elm House Inn on California Blvd (we basically just took advice from tripadvisor). We plan on renting a car in SF and driving to Napa, but will probably look towards cabs or other way to commute to the wineries and restaurants most of the time we're out there since we'll be drinking. A few people that I know have been telling us the same thing about Sonoma so it's definitely something I'd like to look more into. Is it convenient to spend one day in Napa and the next in Sonoma? Or are they too far apart to be worth it? We're coming in mid August and we'll be staying Thur and Fri in SF, Sat-Wed in Napa. We'll take your suggestion about skipping wineries on weekends and see if we can plan some other fun activities for those few days. Thanks again for the response and for your opinions and recommendations.

It's come to our attention that more than a few people are upset at the shortening of California and San Francisco in my original post. Just know that we were unaware that this was insult to some of you that live out there. We had never heard of anyone taking offense to either "Cali" or "San Fran" and if we had we would have avoided the terms. We are only looking for local opinions on great wine and food, which we are glad that others have been happy to provide. We hope no offense if taken.

Thanks for the reply. The balloon trips are a great idea that I hadn't thought of. We'll also check out Meadowood (regardless of if we eat there or not). Thanks again!

Thank you for taking the time to reply. We hadn't heard of Redd and it looks great! As for wineries, typically we drink Cabernet Sauvignon so those that offer Cab's are more what we're looking for. Price is somewhat a factor, but we'd prefer to stay away from anywhere that shrugs off fruit flies. We're not so much concerned with going to those with prestigious names unless they live up to their reputation (My father in law enjoys Darioush but I've been reading that it's one that we should avoid). We look forward to more recommendations. Thanks again.

Hi, my wife and I are coming out for our honeymoon and are overwhelmed with how much there is to see and do out there. We're spending 2 days in San Fran, and 5 in Napa Valley. We always appreciate the honesty of these boards so any help would be appreciated. First, we're looking at going to The French Laundry, any comments from people that have been there recently would be great. Any thoughts on other places to eat while we're out there? We're not picky so any and all of your local favorites are welcome. We're interested in doing wine tastings both free and ones that cost, but which ones do you guys think stand out among others? Also, my wife would like to visit a winery that allows us to have sort of a picnic lunch while we're there, any recs? Finally, being it's a honeymoon, what can you recommend that's really romantic that maybe I can surprise her with? I know this thread is vague and I asked a lot, but any help you can give would be so appreciated. Thanks in advance!
Near Bank Atlantic Center?
There aren't really any "good" steakhouses over there. The only one I can even really think of is The Knife which is an Argentinian place similar in concept to Texas de Brazil which is in the perimeter of Sawgrass Mills. If you want some all around good places check out Bash Cafe off of Oakland and University or Marumi Sushi off Sunrise just west of University. They're both about 10 minutes from Bank Atlantic and are always solid.
