fresh cranberry relish

Doesn't answer your question, but as an fyi, it will take you less time to make than to driving to buy it (and especially for $16). Recipe is usually on back of cranberry bag and only takes 15 minutes or so to make

Fresh hachiya persimmons

Yes - but thanks anyway - guess I'll be heading to some farmers markets this weekend. Hope you find someone to put them to good use. Have a great Thanksgiving!

Fresh hachiya persimmons

Would love to help you out with your glut issue. Just dug out my recipe for persimmon pie for Thanksgiving and would love to make several. Please let me know if you would like to get rid of some - in WeHo area. Thanks!!!!

food at downtown farmer's market

Went down at lunch today and had some chicken saltados myself. Pretty tasty, and adds some variety to the normal downtown haunts. Agree that aji isn't that spicy, but nothing that a bottle of hot sauce in the desk drawer can't cure!

Best Carnitas?

Thanks for all the recommendations. Totally forgot about Frida's - went there last Christmas for a party and had a good time and remember the drinks and food were good. Think I'll give Lare's a go, as we have never been there. And a big thanks to JBC for the informative and investigative reporting!!!!

Best Carnitas?

Yes - you are right. Looking more for a place that would be nice since we are celebrating his birthday. However, thanks to everyone for all your other suggestions, as we will hit those spots at other times.

Best Carnitas?

My SO's birthday is rapidly approaching, and want to take him to dinner for his favorite dish - carnitas (particularly crispy versions). Anyone have any recommendations for a good restaurant, particularly in the Westside area? Thanks!

Restaurant cookbooks

I have 2 cookbooks from Charlie Trotters and they have some really amazing recipes. One of them contains some more difficult recipes and is more for an experienced cook. However the other one is "Charlie Trotter Cooks at Home" (or something close to that) and contains easier recipes that take less time but are still quite delicious. Have also been to his restaurant in Chicago as well and really enjoyed it. Definitely want to go back whenever I happen to be in that town again.

MILK

They were $5 each and were available to go, as where homemade ice cream sandwiches, ice cream bars etc. Also, had ice cream bon bons for $3 a dozen, which I thought was a great deal.

MILK

Went there for the first time on Saturday, and liked it to. Had a medianoche (cuban sandwich), and it was one of the best I've had in some time. The sandwich was pressed and actually slightly crunchy, which I really liked. My partner had the same thing, and the only improvement we could come up with was a bit more flavor in the pork, but overall a really good sandwich. Our only complaint was that you had to buy chips separately (it came with a really small pickled veggie salad). For almost $9 a sandwich, it would seem that a few chips could be added. We also each had a milkshake; a strawberry shortcake and a passion fruit. They were both really good and we definitely will be trying more flavors. Overall, we had a good experience and will definitely be going back.

Date with the wife

I'm going to second the Blue Velvet recommendation. Very nice atmoshphere and views of the city. The food is very good and inventive. Can't wait to go back myself.

e3rd Korean fusion steakhouse (long)

Went there for lunch last week, and although lunch service just started recently, the service was atrocious. Our entrees were brought out only a few minutes after our appetizer arrived. Then, once finished with our lunches, we had to call over someone to take our plates after they sat for 15 minutes (even though they were clearing tables on either side of us). Then, ordered espresso along with dessert, and waiter delivered and left without even giving us any sugar or spoons. Had to flag down a busboy after several minutes to get some. Also, no one ever so much as checked on us during our entire lunch nor filled our water glasses. This is a shame, because the food was good. I had the rib, and it was tasty, although I was disappointed by the kimchi mashed potatoes. Good try on something different, unfortunately it just didn't work. May give the place a second chance since the food was good, but will definitely wait for a couple of months until they get all their kinks worked out.

Vito's -- it's perfect!

Went there on Wednesday, and although the place was suffering from opening week issues, had a good experience overall. The staff was most gracious and friendly, and continually thanked us for our patience. Ordered our pizza with pepperoni, sausage, and onion, and it was delicious. Was with a New Yorker, and he vouched that it was one of the best he has had. Only one small issue - the pizzas are only large - 18" - and once on the table (which are small), there is barely any room for your plate. However, an acquisition of those pizza stands will rectify this issue. Also, dining area is very small, so lots of people were taking to go (as the place was packed). Overall a good experience and look forward to going back.
