taking the family out for a big 50th bday celebration in north jersey

Thanks Bropaul! This is the one we chose. The staff has been extremely helpful in planning this with me.

taking the family out for a big 50th bday celebration in north jersey

Hi Menton -- something more in the direction of "splurge at high end," out of those three options anyway. we'd prefer not to go bankrupt after, etc., etc., but this is a more apt characterization than non-Italian/unique or kitschy.

taking the family out for a big 50th bday celebration in north jersey

in a few weeks. anybody have recommendations for a really special meal for a large group, perhaps between 15 and 20 in number? the family likes Italian, French, or any variation of American food you can think up.

should be within a 45-minute drive of Parsippany.

Good German Restaurant

wechsler's currywurst bratwurst is some great stuff. went there a few weeks ago w/ a group of about 6 friends before hitting a bday party in the area. we hung out for like 2-3 hours in the place, ordering more and more beers and german sausages/fries. so cheap/streetfood-ish and also so delicious. and the beers are great, too -- though be careful. my impression of the press around the place is that the "tap" is known to be excellent, but in reality the whole selection seems to be about 70% bottle and 30% tap. no matter though...i didn't have a bad beer in the whole few hours.

about to ditch sunnyside for williamsburg

glad to see that opinion, Marc. it's the first inkling that i've gotten so far that i'll be improving my food situation by moving. but you're pretty hard on Sunnyside...i like the produce stores on 42nd and greenpoint (mothers? greenpoint farm?), 47th and QB (only occasionally; it's worth a look when they have a ripe piece of fruit AND their kimchee is actually delicious), and 46th south of QB (smileys, i believe). none of these stores is incredibly consistent, but if you're thinking of something you want ripe and now, you can usually find it at one of these or perhaps that castle farm (name?) place over at 41st and QB.

butcher block and shater are gems. and we do have 3 inexpensive (and each one reliable for something--especially associated) grocery stores south of QB. plus the specialty stuff -- i'll miss the baruir and daco romana iced coffees particularly. and dee thai is quality takeout.

thanks to everyone who's provided the good info for williamsburg!

about to ditch sunnyside for williamsburg

i'm more of a cheap-ethnic-food-and-groceries person than a bars-and-avant-garde-restaurants person. am i wrong to sense dilemma from this move?

i've fallen for the blocks and blocks of produce, grocery, butcher, and ethnic specialty food stores in sunnyside. does williamsburg cater to this sort of thing at all? i'm really looking for as much grocery shopping information about williamsburg as possible. thanks!

De Mole in Sunnyside still great!

agreed wholeheartedly on the chorizo w/ eggs...just went a few hours ago with a friend who's not regularly in this area of the country and prepared him for "something i'd heard was among the best mexican in NYC."

neither of us were disappointed & i'll be back many times. and that fresh-squeezed orange juice tastes more like a fresh piece of orange than any OJ i've ever had.

quiet inside and small; great authentic, relaxed feel. everybody seemed very friendly. they even carved some extra length off the nozzles of the hot/medium sauce bottles when they saw how much trouble my friend and i were having.

the prices are sensational too--thank you all for this great rec.

north jersey party of 20 recommend ASAP!

hi all,

have a family of 20 that wants to get food for a bday celebration. usually the chain restaurant-ey crowd, but this time we want something that's not too far out of that price range and simple...think americanish.

thanks so much for the help--any response greatly appreciated this late in the game!
