Wedding in Southern New Hampshire or Maine?

Does anyone have any good advice for this? I am looking for a place that is inexpensive but pretty, and that lets us bring in our own food (we were thinking Moe's sandwiches and Flatbread pizza from Portsmouth!). Anyone?

Sazeracs ALL AROUND! (trip report)

Soooo we just got back from New Orleans last night after spending 6 nights there. The weather was SO gorgeous! I love sun. I MISS sun.

Everything started a little poorly with our flight being delayed...and then our luggage being trapped in Atlanta. We checked into our hotel, and there was plastic tarp on the floor outside the room, so we asked at the desk if there was construction. We were assured it was just a little painting, not to worry, and so we decided to walk over to Coop's for a late night snack.

Coop's always has good food, in my opinion. However, everything seemed to be conspiring against us. We arrived at Coop's and were physically blocked from entering by a large man who was being shouted at by one of his companions. We skirted around them, and walked to the bar where we asked if we should wait or sit anywhere (the place was mostly empty). The girl who had been shouting at the man loudly told us to wait, and then said we could sit anywhere. Apparently, she worked there. She went back to the table, drank some more wine with her buddies, and loudly "joked" about how customers were so annoying. She threw some menus at us and sat back down. A group of five came in, and she shouted at them to wait outside, and never went to get them. We moved to the bar, ordered (jumbalaya supreme for me, crawfish po boy for G.), and all was well. I just hope that crazy girl gets fired, because she was ridiculous!!

After that, things were great. Thursday we had a late lunch at Acme Oyster House (where I had an awesome crawfish po boy, we shared a dozen grilled oysters, and G. had jumbalaya). We debated getting more oysters but decided not to. Later that evening we had pizza from a place on St. Louis.

Friday was lunch at Commander's. I decided to get some exercise in, so I ran the half mile (haha) to Cafe du Monde for pre-Commander's beignets. At Commander's, we sat in the courtyard, which was gorgeous. All my worrying about what to wear was for naught, though, as there were people in JEANS all over the place!!! They were all young twenty-something hipsters, so I guess they thought they could do what they wanted. I ordered turtle soup, a fish, and bread pudding souffle. IT was delicious, OF course. G. ordered turtle soup, the Commander's salad, and the quail. His was also delicious. That evening we ate at Felix's Oyster house, which was all right.

Saturday I went to see Titanic 3D, obviously. It was great! I had Felipe's tacos before hand, which were AWESOME. They fry their shrimp and serve them with a cabbage slaw and sauce that is just...omg. I loved it. We went back for dinner that night, and their margaritas are good too. Then because I am a pig we ate at Acme way later as well...nom nom I had a crawfish po boy and G. had a softshell crab po boy. Delicious.

Sunday we had brunch at Atchafalaya. That place is so cute! Their cocktails were awesome, too. I had crawfish, fried green tomatoes, poached eggs, crystal potatoes, and boudin cakes. G. had something similar...I don't remember...it was SO good. I finished almost every single bite. Later that evening (like wayyyyy later) we went to a place called Yo Mama's on St. Peter's, where I had a baked potato and G. had a burger. Both were good.

Monday we had Johnny's po boys (crawfish and catfish) and later...my favorite, Felipe's!

Tuesday we had muffulettas from Central Grocery. The woman who helped me was VERY nice. We ate them in the courtyard of the hotel...and then G. proposed! =D Great ending to the vacation.

Sazerac Report:

I had one from Crescent City Brewhouse which was suprisingly decent. I got in the habit of ordering them with sprite (will discuss in a minute) but did not need it with this one.

Next up: Commander's. They make 'em strong, and not too sweet, and soooo delicious. I had two.

Tonique: this was a hit as well. The drink was so smooth...yum.

Atchafalaya: theirs was similar to Commander's in its lack of sweetness. They served it with ice. I also had a cocktail called an Isabelle here that had fresh grapefruit juice and gin. Awesome.

Old Absinthe House: now here is why I needed sprite...theirs is gross! I am so glad I tried this drink other places! Theirs tastes like medicine.

Carousel Bar: by far my favorite. I asked for it to go, and the bar tender was pleasant about serving me. I ordered one regular and one made with Cognac (as they were made way back before the phylloxera in Europe), but preferred the regular.

Tujague's: I realize one should drink a sazerac in a glass glass, but I don't need a snooty lecture about it. The bartender here gave me one, and was not friendly when I informed him that I did know how i should drink it, but that I had to go. His cocktail was not as good as Carousel Bar's. And HMMPH, he was a snot.

NOLA: This was delicious as well, but by this point I'd had two from Carousel Bar, one from Tujague's...yeah. I sazeracked out. =)

Sorry so long, thanks for reading!

Commander's Palace Questions

So true. CHILL, Peach! Okay I am chill. Thanks. =)

Commander's Palace Questions

Right! I read a review on Yelp that said a woman was turned away for wearing shorts to Galatoire's...I don't understand why someone would think, "Gee, I'll wear shorts!" to that particular establishment...

Hazelhurst, were you the one who witnessed a group of men in jeans and flannel at CP?

Commander's Palace Questions

I think I am going with the blue dress I'd originally planned, nude heels, and leg makeup for the bruises. They are quite vicious, though, so hopefully they'll cover up. I just panic about these things!! I don't want to be out of place, dress-wise, and I love Commander's, so. Mmmm bread pudding souffle...

We will be in New Orleans tomorrow!!! I am so excited!!! =)

Commander's Palace Questions

So do you think it's okay that I have bruises on my legs? I will wear a dress and everyone will stare at me probably? I have one huge one right above my left knee, and another above my right ankle. Now I am getting panicky. =(

Commander's Palace Questions

Hey all! :)

We're going to CP for lunch on Friday (yay!!) and though we have been before, I was wondering if there are any secrets we should know about...is there an off-menu item or anything?

Also, is it appropriate for me to wear black Capri pants with nice sandals, a nice top, and a nice cardigan? I play rugby and have a vicious bruise on my leg that would be very obvious and perhaps off-putting if I wore a dress. Any thoughts?

I am so excited to be going back to New Orleans!!

Casual dinners?

Hey all. So we get tons of recs for casual lunches, fancy lunches, and fancy dinners. My boyfriend and I like to have a nice lunch, and then sort of find food casually for dinner.

Any recommendations for such things? We're staying in the Quarter, but anywhere near a place we can spend the evening drinking or listening to music (preferably both!) would be awesome.

Best Sazerac in New Orleans?

Here is a conundrum I bet you could assist with: my boyfriend loves beer. Like not miller lite college boy loves beer, but visits breweries/makes his own/tries new stuff all the time. Is there a bar that serves both great cocktails AND has an excellent beer menu? For his sake, I'd love to know about beer only places as well.

Easter Sunday Jazz Brunch?

Someone mentioned that their music is super loud, so I requested upstairs seating. Good idea? Is it like Gallatoire's and we will miss out greatly by being upstairs? Thanks!

Best Sazerac in New Orleans?

I realize this may be considered off-topic, but I wanted to know what people's opinions are about my favorite New Orleans cocktail...

I first had one at Galatoire's (and though my food experience there was not too great, that cocktail was delicious!), then ordered them everywhere. Old Absinthe House's is usually my mainstay. Commander's Palace made a great one, but I admit I usually go for the 25 cent martinis while there for lunch. Emeril's made a decent one. I know I've had them at random places around the Quarter.

Here is the crazy thing...the best one I've had lately was in Philadelphia, at a place called Farmer's Cabinet... Granted, I haven't been to New Orleans since 2010.

So. Have I missed something amazing? I like to walk in and walk out with my cocktail, unless I'm having food at the same time. I am a little scared of fancy cocktail bars as I don't know what I am supposed to wear to such places.

Le Meritage vs. Mr. B's vs. Muriel's Jackson Square

I had shrimp and grits at NOLA -- with BBQ sauce on them -- and I have dreams about them. Like...DREAMS. My mouth is watering.

Easter Sunday Jazz Brunch?

I made reservations for Atchafalaya, but their on-line menu only shows five or six options for brunch. Do they have more normally? Would you recommend Arnaud's over CA? I'm getting so excited for this trip!!

Easter Sunday Jazz Brunch?

I just read a few reviews from there that make it seem like they are always packed...is the food worth it?

Easter Sunday Jazz Brunch?

Any recommendations for great food and music, but not at commander's palace? We're having lunch there a different day. Is Easter going to be any different from a regular Sunday?

Keeping Champagne Bubbly...

My friend and I were considering having my birthday party this summer at her private pool, which allows food and drink but no glass. I live very close -- a few blocks away -- and have no problem switching some wine into some plastic bottles to carry it over. Would the same work for champagne?

Driving through in July - recommendations please!

My boyfriend and I are driving from Pennsylvania, through the upper Midwest, on to Utah and then to California in July.

I have the book Roadfood, which we'll use, but I'm also looking for ethnic eateries, and places to find healthy food...two things that Roadfood misses completely.

Any recs are welcomed! I think we'll be driving on I90.

Road trip across the US - where to eat?

What is PNW? Is SF San Francisco? We might be there for a wedding in August.

Road trip across the US - where to eat?

Oh yeah, that's where we've gone every year previously...I am a teacher so I get spring break, and we went in 07,08,09, and 10. I love it there and think about the food all the time. =)

Road trip across the US - where to eat?

My BF and I are driving around the country this summer (from PA through Chicago, past Yellowstone down to Las Vegas and LA, then over through Texas and to NEW ORLEANS (yay), then to Florida, and up the eastern coast back to PA) (tired just writing that...)

Once our itinerary is more solidified, I'll go to each separate board to look for recs. But for now...are there any places that are SO DELICIOUS that we should try our best to include them?

New Orleans in July...any recs?

Hey, I was just reading your review of Galatoire's from when I was disappointed by my experience there like two years ago.

So...my BF and I have tried the following places: Commander's Palace, Emeril's, NOLA, and Galatoire's...for the fancier meals I mean. What would you suggest we try this time around? We'll go back to Commander's, because I love it there, but we want to add to our experience.

New Orleans in July...any recs?

I've never been in full summer before, so I don't know if there are any places that peak (for whatever reason) in the middle of the summer. My BF and I will be in New Orleans toward the middle/end of July.

Anything to avoid? Anything to make sure we try? I think we'll be there for two or three nights.

Absinthe frappé!?

Anyone know where I can get a good absinthe frappé or something similar, preferably in the Quarter? Old Absinthe House's ice machine is broken...:(

Upcoming NOLA trip - what do u think of my resto choices - Help?!

Do you and JazzyB think it was an aberration that my boyfriend and I had such a terrible experience at Galatoire's last year? We made reservations for the upstairs, understanding we would miss the atmosphere of downstairs, but we were assured here and in guidebooks that the experience of the food would be the same. We were not impressed -- by the service or by the food. I liked my cocktail.

I know my bf never wants to go there again -- he felt ripped off -- but I see such glowing praise here that I am curious what went wrong with our meal...

Drop-in lunches that are delicious delicious delicious

Hi! What are the places, near and in the Quarter, that my BF and I can just stop into for great food, for lunch and dinner?

We're going to Commander's on Wednesday, but have no other reservations. We like to have plans but prefer not to have reservations as that's a little too restrictive, you know?

So...Napoleon House? Acme? Coops? What else is awesome that is relatively easy to get into? We don't mind waiting less than 30 minutes.

Thanks.

New Orleans Rehearsal Dinner

I am so jealous. =) That is awesome.

Late March visit to New Orleans...

Thanks for the Stella! rec. Any idea how much the Chef's Tasting Menu costs?

August on a budget

Old Absinthe House is wonderful for one reason: the ice crushing machine they use to make their absinthe frappes. It creates the perfect crushed ice. PERFECT.

Late March visit to New Orleans...

My boyfriend are arriving for our annual visit on March 28th and staying through April 4th. We're having lunch at Commander's Palace on Wednesday, but that is the only thing set in stone so far.

We're looking for delicious but affordable food throughout the week, and one more expensive dinner at a fabulous restaurant. Maybe two, or some exciting and reasonably priced lunches.

Recommendations please!

I have been to many places around the Quarter (by which I mean Napoleon House, Acme, Felix's, Coop's, Gallatoire's, Central Grocery, Cafe du Monde) and prefer to stay close to there or on the streetcar line.

Thank you!

NY foodie coming to New Orleans looking for CANT miss places- Help me with my itinerary please

A hoagie is like a po' boy in that it's on a similarly shaped roll. It's long. Usually the bread is not cut all the way through, and it's filled with normal sub stuffs: Italian, or turkey & cheese. There are a bunch of different peppers people like to put on 'em as well. If you were a visiting tourist to Philadelphia, you wouldn't really have gotten a hoagie -- it's more like the food you eat on your lunch break. Unless you went to Tony Luke's which is pretty darn good.
