Anybody know where I can buy some vinegar mother? or if you have any, can I get it from you? The air in my apartment doesn't seem to have any :-)

Thanks,

know of mass quaintities of fried calamari or tempura in gramercy?

I am looking for locations where I can find considerably large sized portions of fried calamari (bar / Italian style) and/or tempura (any kind: veggie, shrimp, squid, etc..) in the Gramercy area. Ideally these are recommendations from personal experiences, as I know I could get either of these items at any bar or Japanese restaurant.

Tempura serving sizes are usually so small.

Ideally it’s inexpensive, but I will happy as long as its larger then your normal portions. I love these styles of fried food and I want more!

Thanks,

Just moved to Gramercy and the grocery stores are no good!

Thanks. I particularly like the idea of doing my own fishing. If I'm going to go out of my way, i'm really gunna go out of my way!

By the way, the fish store you are speaking of recently "merged" with the Gramercy Meat Market.

Yeh, I'm already close friends with Fresh Direct. We go way back! But I'm not always one for planning out my weeks worth of meals

Thanks, I didn't come across those in my searches, and they're very helpfull. However, those threads are also very disappointing! I mean, they do answer my question but sadly, the answer basically seems to be "no, there's nothing that close to you". Damn!

Just moved to Gramercy and the grocery stores are no good!

I just moved to 2nd and 21st, and found that most grocery stores kinda suck! I am used to having a fish section on ice (not prepackaged fish) and decent sized meat section, ideally with a butcher in back. I have tried the couple of Morton's and Dag's that are near.

I know there is Gramercy Meat Market, but that's too expensive for daily buying, and I know there is Whole Foods and TJ's, but I want something closer.

Are there any grocery stores I missing that have a proper meat/fish section? and/or some good gourmet foods like I was used to on the Upper East Side.

Thanks for you help everybody!

anybody know where i can find inexpensive salmon caviar? i know places like citarella carry it, but its a smallish quantity, and pretty pricey. i know a couple years ago, i was able to find it in large amounts for a good price, but everybody seems to like to keep the price high.

any help on where to find it in bulk or cheap containers of it would be appreciated.

Cheese Store NYC

I went to Cheese on 62nd about a month ago and while the cheeses were excellent… the service really made me not want to go back! There were two ladies working at the time, and I have a feeling one of them was the owner. I was working with the “non-owner” at selecting and tasting cheeses, and meanwhile the owner kept telling her to give me SMALL amounts to taste, or even to not cut a cheese to taste (because the cheese hasn’t been cut before)!! Since I was there, I bought about 40 bucks worth of cheese, but I don’t plan on going back because I was barely able to taste the cheeses I wanted to try. You can’t be so frugal in the cheese business.

Romantic birthday dinner with good service

I’m looking to take my girl out for a nice dinner at a joint with some nice/interesting atmosphere… ideally romantic, but any fancy/unique atmosphere would work. Good service is important here, as she is in the hospitality industry and would really appreciate good service. I would like to stay away from some of the standards (Italian, French, Greek, etc…) unless they are unique. Ethnic / new food is good. Price shouldn’t be anything crazy 30-45’ish per head before drinks. I’m pretty open to any location in Manhattan. This will be in late June.
Let me know what ideas you folks have… also would appreciate why you think your place is ideal for me.
Thanks in advance!

Where to find grocery’s in financial distinct

I have a friend who is moving near the intersection of Maiden Lane and Nassau Street (next to the federal reserve). I have never seen any grocery stores around. Does anybody know where the closest ones are that are not the deli type? And does anybody know of the closest gourmet grocery stores? Would be excellent if these are walking distance, but whatever.
