Favorite Horchata in LA or environs

I like the horchata at Taco Zone but can't say it blew me away, however I tend to order it every time I pay them a visit. The made to order horchata at El Pollo Unico... now, that's something I gotta try.

Frequently mentioned on this board.

Taco trailer (towed by a van) that sets up after 8PM on Alvarado just north of Sunset. Great suadero and cabeza tacos as well.

Thanks for the heads up. I've always wondered about that place. Taking my dog for a bath next door and I'll stop by for tacos and horchata.

DeSano Pizza Bakery – this place needs some love

We were gonna try a cannoli or some gelato but were too full after the meal. Gives us (another) reason to return.

I do hope they can make it work. The location and sheer size of the place make me concerned about their viability as a business.

"Their paper bags are nothing special."

That's a joke, right?

So, you're just angry for the sake of being angry then. Whatever floats your boat.

Liquid Cocaine

Thanks for speaking for all of us.

You must be a real hit at parties.

And to echo what others have said, whoever named this has never tried actual cocaine.

Perhaps civil disobedience is in order... which would entail bringing your own bags.

DeSano Pizza Bakery – this place needs some love

After reading a few write-ups on this board, we decided to give Desano a try for a very late lunch. Ordered the Margherita D.O.P. with salsiccia and the Verdura – broccoli rabe, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, garlic, buffalo mozzarella - both in the smaller size.

First impression is that the place is absolutely huge! There’s seating for well over a hundred in three different rooms. A giant walk-in takes up some of the space and four wood fired ovens line the back wall.

Second impression is that it was empty at 3 PM. Aside from an Italian family chatting with a guy we presumed to be the owner, my dad and I were the only people in the joint.

The pizzas came out after a few minutes and looked solid. Crust edged with a little char but the middle could have been a bit more well done.

The Margherita was tasty in a minimalist way. The sauce was the highlight, tangy and tasting heavily of tomato not overpowered by herbs. Velvety smooth cheese and perhaps a bit too much sausage.

The Verdura was easily my favorite. The combo of bitter sautéed rapini, garlic and buffalo mozzarella was fantastic.

The crust on both was chewy with just a hint of crunch around the edges. No sogginess in the middle.

Although one could look at the smaller size pizzas as “personal,” they’re on the large side for one. We ate our fill and had plenty left over.

As we were leaving, the owner/manager approached and asked if we enjoyed our meal. We replied in the affirmative and asked how business was going. He frowned and said things were slow but perked up and added that they will start serving beer and wine next week.

I hope this place succeeds, as the food was very good – I’d say on par if not a bit better than Mother Dough but at a lower price point. My worry is that they’re in a culinary wasteland stuck in the ass-end of East Hollywood. If they were a bit further east, they could play more successfully to the Silver Lake crowd.

Of the newer pizzas in the area, DeSano is leaps and bounds better than Wood, the place that took over the Tom’s Burgers space on Sunset/Parkman.

Not sure where you're coming from Cia Bob but if you're willing to stray that far from your destination, there is a host of options like L&E, Song, Barbrix, Silver Lake Ramen, etc.

Are you referring to Pine and Crane? It's not exactly Bowl-adjacent. In Silver Lake on Sunset just west of Maltman.

Rutt's Hut on Diners, Drive Ins and Dives

I was thinking the same thing and was bummed to realize the OP wasn't talking about THE REAL Rutt's Hut, although Fab's puts out a decent approximation. As far as the Jersey deep friend hotdog goes, I was always more of a Hiram's fan, which was featured on one of the Bourdain shows a while back.

Do their occupations have anything to do with your requirements or do you just want to put it out there that you have representation?

P.S. I love how you've used title case for "Agents."

Saint Estephe? John Sedlar?

I produced a piece for Food Network on Encounter shortly after he took the job there. His plans were very ambitious - and I remember the food he served us was fantastic - but the price point coupled with the location (they were confident they could turn it into a destination restaurant for non-travelers) and goofy sci-fi aesthetic pretty much meant the place was doomed to fail.
