He has a beautiful smile. :|

Mufaletta in Los Angeles

Disagree. I find everything there to be overstuffed.

Mufaletta in Los Angeles

While I'm no expert on muffuletta, the one at Little Jewel in Chinatown is pretty darn tasty.

Pimento Cheese 911

Why doesn't your friend just whip up a batch? It's super easy to make at home.

My mistake. I guess I should read carefully.

Skewers. I'm itching to try Dune in Atwater.

Baker Cakemaker (Hollywood)

Awesome. It's been too long since I had good ensaymada and malasadas.

Thanks. Will hit it up tomorrow.

French speaking restaurant in LA or OC

I was gonna suggest Cafe Beaujolais but, while it's very French, the last coupla meals I had there were subpar.

BEST FRENCH FRIES IN LOS ANGELES

I'll +1 the fries at Haché LA. Consistently crispy and fluffy inside, plus the aioli is awesomely garlicky.

All'Acqua - New in Atwater

Been around for over a year. Solid place. Like the bar. I appreciate that the menu is solidly MOR - the chef isn't pushing boundaries or turning out stunt food.

Bryant Ng re-emerges!

Bummer, as I tend to avoid Santa Monica like it's infectious.

Craft bacon in LA.

Jon's market carries all sorts of tasty bacon that's sold in slab form - brands with Eastern European names (I can't recall) that are produced locally. The Hungarian-style that's rubbed in paprika is very, very good. Cured and not at all smoky.

Belcampo Meat Co. also has some interesting stuff - their English style "streaky" bacon is quite good.

Best Steakhouse in L.A.? Comparable to Porter House or Peter Luger?

I'll use the standard descriptor I always use - Mastro's reminds me more of a Tel Aviv nightclub than a traditional steakhouse. The guy on the second floor playing keyboards + the horrifying botoxed cougars + dudes wearing as much perfume/cologne as female diners + the annoying upsells from the wait staff... not my cup of tea. Cheesy.

Steaks are okay - just okay and side items like the lobster mash are pretty blech.

Wolfgangs. Cut. Nick and Stef's.

Mastro's gets a lot of love on this board but I just don't get it. It's all about the glitz for some people.

L.A. Dish of the Month, June 2015 -- PIZZA

Thanks for the suggestion. Actually, Frank Pepe's in New Haven, CT has been serving a Neapolitan style white clam pie for nearly 100 years.

are there any good dive bars left in greater downtown LA?

It's not the real thing and there's no reason to eat it at all.

Jumbos is the vegan "cheese" of strip clubs.

"Mister White" from Tomato Pie in Silver Lake topped with prosciutto, arugula and caramelized onions.

Chewy crust and the right amount of toppings. I gild the lily with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil and some chili flakes.

Chow worthy food in the most unexpected places

EGB is the kind of place that sells based on low price. It's also the kind of place where you don't want to touch anything due to its questionable cleanliness.

If I find everything about Spam to be utterly revolting could this convert me? Full disclosure, I'm half Filipino.

Jeezus, I was just going to write the same thing.

Your description of Jumbos is spot on. I want my filth authentically filthy, not presented in a "meta" way and processed through an alt/art-school filter.

It looks to me like they dump an entire bag of pre-shredded low moisture mozzarella on each pie and don't even cook it through.

Not my thing.

Yeah, I'm a regular at Footsies and have eyeballed that joint across the street more than once. Doesn't look too inviting.

Thanks for the details on Chubasco. We may have to do a sketchy crawl starting there and eventually working our way to Sam's Hofbrau.

Do restaurants overcharge on purpose?

It might also be a situation where the bar staff have it set up so they can double-dip - meaning charge twice for one bottle of wine and pocket the difference. I've seen it happen before.

I've always been intrigued by El Chubasco. Seems like a rough and dank joint.

L.A. Dish of the Month, June 2015 -- PIZZA

What am I missing? It looks like something one might find in Oklahoma City or some other destination not known for its pizza. Volume of toppings is too high and quality of toppings is on the low side. Is it the nostalgia talking or is it authentically delicious?

Not trolling, authentically curious.

Chow worthy food in the most unexpected places

El Unico Pollo Taquero - a corner shack/stand where the old Jay Burger used to be.
4481 Santa Monica Blvd @ Virgil

Whole chicken cooked over mesquite w/ corn torillas, rice, beans for $12 or so.

Damn is it good.
