Hipsters on Hillhurst

You've got me by a few decades.

Have lived in Silver Lake for fifteen years - on the north side of Sunset. Even when I first moved in, I had friends that would likely be labeled as hipsters (ugh, I typed it again) - facial hair, funny hats, vintage bicycles, the whole thing - predating me south of Sunset on Marathon, on Venango, all over that area, as a matter of fact. There was even a pretty popular after hours joint on that side of the boulevard.

In fact IIRC, there was a bbq joint and a coffee place very near to where Sqirl is now, both of which were run by and patronized by those types.

Not that new. Hipsters - and I die a little inside every time I use that meaningless catchall - are nothing new to the area and rents have been cheaper south of Sunset for some time.

Yeah, I didn't get that, either.

PIZZA DELIVERY CHARGES

I might understand your "out of bounds" remark if there was some sort of ad hominem attack in my response but I was simply disagreeing with you, which makes your reply read as defensive.

Forgive me. No one informed me you were the arbiter of what is considered in or out of bounds.

PIZZA DELIVERY CHARGES

Exactly.

I have a relative who occasionally hosts NFL games at his house and insists on providing the "food." He'll then hunt online for the cheapest pizza deals, which means we're usually stuck with something inedible like Papa John's or Dominos.

He's happy he saved six or seven bucks.

The first time he did it, I pointed out that, sure it was cheaper but that's only because the restaurant in question sourced the cheapest ingredients and hired some kid to "assemble" the pizza and run it through a device that only barely resembles a pizza oven.

He looked at me like I was speaking Ancient Greek and his wife later scolded me for never being satisfied.

The takeaway: there's no reasoning with people who have this particular mindset.

PIZZA DELIVERY CHARGES

Pointing out what one job pays relative to another is not irrelevant. In fact it's extremely relevant . That's why you tip certain people who bill hourly - say, a baby sitter - while you'd never think to tip others - like a Century City attorney.

Oh, and I'm not ducking from the idea that calling someone "cheap" is an insult. It is.

If you decline to tip a delivery person based on the delivery charge without explicit knowledge that said charge goes to the employee then yes, in my opinion, you're cheap. Maybe you're even a cheapo, skinflint or (gasp!) a penny pincher!

PIZZA DELIVERY CHARGES

Not to mention avoiding the hassle of finding parking, which can be the biggest PIA in the whole process of picking up food.

Yes, we've got it pretty good here in the U.S. of A.

PIZZA DELIVERY CHARGES

I'm bashing your strategy, as it comes across as cheap and willfully clueless. You're dumping on the poor wage slave who ferried the pizza to your door while the biz owner gets the delivery charge.

PIZZA DELIVERY CHARGES

Just out of curiosity, what "coast" are you from Bulavinaka? I was born in Asia, raised in and around NYC and have lived in LA (Silver Lake) for fifteen years.

To me, it comes across as clueless - possibly willfully so - to be either outraged or surprised that a business charges for delivery. This is especially true in an age when gas prices are rising, recent anomalous dip notwithstanding.

Yes, it comes across as a little cheap. What's even cheaper are the people who suggest they don't tip if there's a delivery charge, which means that the business owner gets the delivery charge but the person who actually ferried the pizza to your door gets stiffed.

Nice... real nice.

Santa Barbara "Urban Trail" wineries

Sanford has amazing pinot.
Kalyra is known for its whites, both sparkling and flat.
Mosby is not on your list but it's just down the road from Sanford and is known for interesting Italian varietals.

There's no reasoning with someone like you.

You're either so deeply entrenched in distasteful beliefs that there's no point in arguing with you or you're feeling backed into a corner and sticking to opinions you know are wrong just to prove a point.

Either way, I apologize to the entire board - excluding the OP - for taking up space by essentially feeding a high-functioning troll.

I understand why you've reported the post. I would like it to stay up as an example of the sort of mindset behind the behavior at the restaurant in question.

"It so happens that many Japanese have had extremely negative experience with westerners - both here and in Japan, which is why many of the best restaurants in Japan has signs outside banning foreigners from entering."

So, if I reversed your statement, as in...

It so happens that many WHITE people have had extremely negative experience with JAPANESE which is why many of the best restaurants in the USA have signs outside banning JAPANESE from entering.

Would this fly or would it prompt lawsuits and all others sorts of - justifiable action? This is exactly the sort of thing that happens when you attempt to justify the unjustifiable. It's one thing to give regulars special treatment. It's something else entirely to prejudge someone based on their ethnicity or appearance. I'm not the type to get outraged but your comments border on the disgusting.

Best to just stop writing now, as you're doing this business - which you claim to have no connection to - significantly more harm than good.

Arthur Avenue type food in L.A.?

Rao's more than Tana's but Rao's is not what anyone would call affordable, which is what the Arthur Avenue joints are known for - good food, plenty of it, decent prices.

I'm sorry but I don't buy your "rudeness barometer" comment and your attempt to spin the restaurant's hierarchical - and apparently distinctly Japanese - approach to service by essentially blaming the restaurant's customers. This smacks of deflection and very poor PR.

If the owners want to treat regulars in a special fashion, it's their right to do so. It's also the right of a potential customer to go elsewhere based on this model.

PIZZA DELIVERY CHARGES

You either chose to pay it or you don't. A business should do what it thinks is best in order to stay in business.

Ode to The Godmother

Thank you for clarifying.

I just might have to try this thing called "mustard" everyone is talking about. Can I find it at Ralph's or do I need to head to a specialty store?

Ode to The Godmother

What are you advocating here, that mustard should be on a sandwich just because it's lo-cal? That's crazy talk and you know it.

No competition. Belle's wins hands down. They're chewier with a better all around consistency.

While BB was the best option on this side of town, I always found their bagels to taste sort of withered, even when fresh. Belle's are also less sweet, which is a good thing IMHO.
