LA Vacation in July - Critique my choices!

Carve out a coupla hours to walk around Grand Central Market. Go with empty bellies and graze. Get there early enough to sample some of Wexler's fantastic smoked fish.

Best French Toast in LA?

Yeah, the corn flakes thing doesn't do it for me. I prefer french toast to be closer to a (slightly) drier bread pudding.

Best French Toast in LA?

If you're willing to drive about twenty minutes or so, Square One Dining has the best french toast - made with brioche - I've had, especially if you opt for the optional poached fruit on top.

Favorite burger for $5 or less?

I'll second the Yuca's rec, although I usually go for the double as the single is a bit bready to me.

Try Patra Burger on Sunset in EP. Single is under $4 IIRC. Nice char and, although I usually prefer just salt and pepper prior to cooking, they use a spice blend that I'm guessing is chili powder, oregano and garlic powder that gives the cooked burger a smoky taste with just a hint of kick.

Dinner Recommendations for Burbank area

Check your itinerary and clarify. I'm guessing you're not especially familiar with the LA metro area, as Santa Clarita and Burbank are nowhere near each other.

If you're staying in Santa Clarita and willing to drive for good food, Burbank should probably not be the first destination on your list.

Does anyone do a Newark hot dog in OC?

It's not the same as standard pizza dough - the crumb and texture are different. I'm thinking there's semolina flour in there but, as I'm a terrible baker, I can't be sure.

Thumbs down on brunch at Taco Maria

The "bread+bread+bread" fixed menu would be enough to make me wonder what the chef was thinking (or smoking) and would likely prompt me to pen a direct but polite note to management.

Where would one even get pizza bread in LA, or on the west coast for that matter? Love that stuff but haven't had it in years. Great way to make/serve a cheesesteak.

Does anyone do a Newark hot dog in OC?

Jersey is a 'dog loving state - all sorts of variations. The ones featured at Fab's are modeled on the Callahan's/Rutt's Hut/Hiram's hot dogs that are deep fried but served with the standard condiments of mustard, kraut, etc.

Not aware of any places that do the "Italian hot dogs" found in NJ, although I haven't sought them out - just not my cup of tea.

Meeting on Wilshire?

I was thinking the same but it's a hellhole around there - just maneuvering a vehicle around that quagmire is a huge PIA.

Belcampo now open in Santa Monica.

That's part of the app and yes, I find that annoying, too.

where to watch Pacquiao vs Mayweather?

Or that, I suppose. What you wrote is closer to the phonetic spelling .
Pinoy here (technically 50%, born in Makati) and have never seen it spelled out as the OP has.

Whiz - Bang for your Burger Buck

I don't see it. While it's not on my regular rotation, I think Boo's can be pretty damn tasty.

Yeah, you might run into the Turnbull AC's or the Oprhans on your way back to Coney Island.

Vintage LA diners with great food

Pann's is the only one I can think of that you'd go out of your way for.

What does New York have that LA doesn't?

The hamptons should be nuked!

What does New York have that LA doesn't?

Chowhound is all about spreading the word about specific places, so the idea of saying, "I went to Manhattan, walked into some random pizza joint and got a crappy slice" is a piss poor argument. The same goes for any cuisine in any city. We've got so many tools at our disposal at this point that it's a wonder mediocre restaurants survive.

I didn't poo-poo Ithaca. I poo-poo'd your willful obtuseness. :P

What does New York have that LA doesn't?

First off, please don't tell me what I mean. Secondly, your assertion is the same for every type of cuisine in every location. You can get crappy barbecue walking into some random place in Austin and you can get a crappy bowl of noodle soup walking into some random joint in Hanoi.

What does New York have that LA doesn't?

I'm guessing you know full well what the OP meant - clearly not referring to Ithaca or Schenectady.

What does New York have that LA doesn't?

That's because they are. I'm an NYC transplant - been living in LA for fifteen years and absolutely love it but it cannot compare in terms of the holy trinity:

bagels
pizza
jewish deli

and I'll add neighborhood Italian joints as well.

That being said, NYC has very limited choices when it comes to:

Chinese food in all its myriad complexities
Mexican food "
Persian/Middle Eastern food "
Korean food "

Oh and I'll close with this: NYC kicks the crap out of LA when it comes to having restaurant servers who are well trained, not overly surly and genuinely like what they do.

Searching for natural casing hot dogs in grocery stores/meat markets in Los Angeles/Southern California

Gelson's private label hot dogs are Cantella's natural casing. They've got a great snap.

TJ's "Jumbo uncured" - not sure who makes them but they're quite good. Smooth as opposed to coarse ground. Mild seasoining.

Jon's Markets have Bobak's of Chicago and all manner of natural casing sausages and hot dogs. I've seen veal wieners there, combos of pork and beef, all beef, beef knockwurst, etc. It's like a hotdog wonderland up in that piece.

Hipsters on Hillhurst

You've got me by a few decades.

Have lived in Silver Lake for fifteen years - on the north side of Sunset. Even when I first moved in, I had friends that would likely be labeled as hipsters (ugh, I typed it again) - facial hair, funny hats, vintage bicycles, the whole thing - predating me south of Sunset on Marathon, on Venango, all over that area, as a matter of fact. There was even a pretty popular after hours joint on that side of the boulevard.

In fact IIRC, there was a bbq joint and a coffee place very near to where Sqirl is now, both of which were run by and patronized by those types.

Hipsters on Hillhurst

Not that new. Hipsters - and I die a little inside every time I use that meaningless catchall - are nothing new to the area and rents have been cheaper south of Sunset for some time.
