Why can't LA get real, squeaky, Quebec-style cheese curds?

Revive the curds!

What are some over-rated L.A. restaurants to you? Why, specifically? Only one each!

I'll agree that it's no great shakes. The last time I visited, my steak was almost laughably tough and gristly.

Dude, you either have an unhealthy obsession with the place or your some sort of corporate shill.

Chill the frick' out. People are entitled to their opinions.

The burgers are decent - yes, they're better than BK and the other bottom feeding chains - but their fries are pretty darned crappy.

Uh, some people actually live in Highland Park and the surrounding areas.

10 Best Sausages In LA

+1 for Red Lion's sausage platter + beer. Don't forget to order extra mustard on the side and perhaps some potato pancakes.

German Food Truck in L.A.

It's hard not to like schnitzel. I'm just not entirely convinced that the whole food truck phenomenon has legs.

Also, while certain food - like a wurst on a bun or a schnitzel served in a sort of sandwich - lends itself to being served for stand-up eating outdoors, other food - say sauerbraten with spaetzle - not so much.

The question was about overrated places and it's overrated. Simple.

Finally, someone had the stones to challenge Langer's pastrami hegemony! I've honestly tried to like the place but it just doesn't do it for me.

The Apple Pan. If I want an iceberg lettuce sandwich, I'll make it at home.

Agreed as well. I just don't get the love.

I like the place. I'd have been disappointed if I walked in expecting great food but my expectations were low to middling.

I find the food enjoyable if not revelatory and, unlike the vast majority of this board, I like the loud atmosphere, especially when the place is pumping on a weekend night.

Purgatory (Pizza) at the Junction - like a hole in the head

Thanks.

Care to add details and/or compare it to other neighborhood places like Tomato Pie, Garage or Wood? Is the crust thin to the point of being crispy throughout or does it have some chew to it?

Purgatory (Pizza) at the Junction - like a hole in the head

I was walking my dog down Sunset in Silver Lake and noticed Purgatory Pizza has taken over the old Madame Matisse location. I guess there's another location downtown.

My first reaction was that this area needs another pizza place to the same extent it needs to bus in eccentric facial hair from elsewhere. There have to be ten or more similar options within a 1.5 mile radius.

Has anyone tried it yet?

No License/BYOB in L.A. County??

You're just being a sophist now. Read the LA times article if you'd care to or continue being surprised.

Whatever.

No License/BYOB in L.A. County??

I just looked up the law. It IS illegal in LA for restaurants without liquor or beer and wine licenses to allow BYOB. My guess is that the ABC looks the other way but has to enforce when someone complains or tips them off, as was the case in the example I cited above.

"Section 25604 makes it a public nuisance for any person to maintain any club room in which any alcoholic beverage is received or kept, or to which any alcoholic beverage is brought, for consumption on the premises by members of the public or of any club, corporation, or association, unless the person and premises are licensed under the ABC Act."

No License/BYOB in L.A. County??

I'm 99% sure that it's illegal in LA County. In fact, I remember a discussion on here about the Park restaurant in EP allowing BYO prior to getting their beer and wine license. Someone ratted them out to the ABC and they were forced to stop and fined, IIRC.

Best Bagels in SFV or Conejo Valley?

We'll have to agree to disagree. The last time I had Ess-a-bagel was maybe three years ago and I enjoyed it thoroughly.

On a side note, I heard the original Stuy Town location was in some sort of jeopardy but that might be old news.

I'm an everything bagel with veggie guy and/or an onion with whitefish salad type. They do (or have done) both very well.

Anything interesting in or around Bell?

I've got to schlep my dad down to Bell on Tuesday and was wondering if there are any chowish places worth hitting up for lunch. Open to cuisine but want to keep the price low.

TIA.

Best Bagels in SFV or Conejo Valley?

The only report I've got is from a friend I knew from NYC who now lives up the hill from the Belle's location.

I trust his taste - he's an Ess-a-bagel fan - and he says these are the real deal.

Yeah, I pretty much gave up on bagels when I moved to LA nearly 15 years ago but this place gives me hope.

Western Bagel is little more than round bread. I'd avoid. Anything you might get up in the Bay Area will likely be as good or better.

The Morrison in Atwater Village

One other note about the Morrison is that their cheater pints are among the smallest I've seen. I felt like Andre the Giant holding one in my hand. Like, comically small.

Afterwards, we strolled across the street to the Roost, which I hadn't visited in six months or so. Shocked to see that the place has been made over. We shuddered when a food menu was placed in front of us. The idea of eating there...

On the upside, their rocks glasses remain among the largest in the city.
