chocolate cake?
I heard that the Portillo's recipe is a box mix with Mayonaise added (Pilsbury Chocolate fudge +3 eggs + 1 C water + 1C Mayo). It gives it a super moist texture. The frosting is also out of a can. (Pilsbury chocolate fudge frosting)
All Aboard Train Restuarant - Downers/Darien
Found a GREAT gem of a kids restaurant on 75th, east of I-355 in the Toys R Us shopping center. It's called All Aboard. The restaurant has a giant "U" shaped counter that houses a Lionle train that delivers your food. It is set up very similar to Choo-Choo Johnnies in Frankfort---but it is much nicer and brighter. The food is what really sets this place apart. In addition to the standard kid far they have a great menu of sandwiches for adults. Everything I have had here is exceptional!
I have been to neary every train restaurant (Choo-Choo Johnnies, Two Toots, etc.) and this beats them all by a mile. (I hate eating while people are breathing down my neck at Two Toots in downtown Downers--and the food is mediocre at best) The staff is awesome and service is quick. The owner told me that he has been in the restaurant buisiness for 34 years--and it shows. The also have a good ice cream selection.
Their website is allaboarddiner.com .If you have kids that like trains--this is a great place.
I88 & Route 59 Area + Paula Deen
My 65 year old mother is visitng from Ohio. She's a sweet little ol' country girl (think Paula Deen) that has turned her nose up at nearly every restaurant I have ever taken her to. I need som help--I'd like to take her to nice, casual place with good atmosphere and great "old-fashioned" country cooking. Thanks!
Found a BBQ Gem in Oswego/Aurora
I stopped by Thomas' BBQ on Montgomery between Hill and Eola yesterday for lunch. Awesome pulled pork sandwich! Excellent sauce and real pulled pork--not just some smashed up left overs. The place looks like it's run by a husband and wife team, she works the counter--and never really smiles, and he works the kitchen, behind a curtain. There are a few tables inside to eat in and it does have a cool "Bama atmosphere--but, I always get it to go. Good crispy steak fries accompany each sandwich. Sides were a bit pricey. They also do a lot of catering work so they are closed some days to accomodate their catering business. Give this place a try!
Fish Tacos? Aurora/Naperville
Anyone know where I can get some good fish tacos in the Route 59/I88 area? I just got back from Texas and I need a fix. Thanks!
Aurora (OUTLET MALL) Breakfast?
I'm looking for a place in the Naperville, Aurora area for breakfast before a day of shopping at the outlet mall.
Authentic Barbeque
If you are willing to drive to the burbs, there is a great place called "Salt Creek BBBQ". They have two locations--the original one is in Elk Grove, on Devon, just west of O'Hare. The other is in Glendale Heights, on North Ave.a couple of miles west of 355--it's across from Menards.
There is also a place in Plainfield/Joliet called Baby Back Clues. It's in a little nook of a strip mall on Route 30 just west of I-55.
These are the 2 best places that I know of around here--and they are definitely worth the drive.
The Shamrock Shake
If you are really lucky and find a willing McD's employee--you have to get them to mix 1/2 Shamrock and 1/2 Chocolate. It tastes like a Fannie May Meltaway!
