Hi Everybody (and a special "Hi" to you, westsidegal. It's Jeff (jwrites4u) and as usual, I need your help. Vivi (one of my "adopted" granddaughters) would appreciate a few suggestions. This weekend she'll be in Newport Beach with the "love-of-her life". (Yeah, they're still together!) She's planning on taking him to dinner Saturday evening to celebrate his birthday. She'd love a wonderful Mexican restaurant (possibly Javier's), with romantic ambience and great food. She's planning on dressing up for the occasion, and she's hoping that she can make it with a max of $100.00 for the two of them. Any suggestions will be deeply appreciated. Thanks, all, Jeff

Shrimp, Ribs, and Romance Under $100.00

Does anyone know of any restaurant that specializes in both shrimp and ribs, beautifully packaged with the magical ribbon of romance? These kids are no more than twenty years old, and are already living the lives of the old romantics of yesteryear. He's been here from Colombia only eighteen months and if what he does tomorrow, will be as good as what he does today, he will become a brilliant writer. She is a close friend of one of my "adopted" granddaughters. They would like a place that is a bit more elegant than "casual" while not being too formal. Location can be just about anywhere in or near the San Fernando Valley. His max is $100.00 with everything, preferably closer to $75.00. Le c'est possible? Thanks, Jeff

Special Lunch 4 A Very Special Daughter & Grandson

Hi, Everybody. I'm back, and as usual need your help. No, this post is neither about my two "adopted" granddaughtrers nor their mother. This post is about MY daughrer.Andrea is 43 years old. In itself, this doesn't make her special. What does is the fact that she's still alive. Andrea was born with cystic fibrosis, and not one of her many doctors gave her even a smideon of hope that she'd make it into her 9th birthday. I made a few promises to God if He would keep her alive. Well, she's still here and I have yet to break any of those promises.
Now, I need your help. Next Monday, she's coming down with my grandson so that I can take them both to lunch. My grandson is the typical 9 year old. It's hell trying to get him to eat something from most restaurants' menus. All he will eat is chicken nuggets, but can usually find something else to eat if the restaurant has a kid's menu. I live in Valley Village, surrounded by Studio City, Burbank, and North Hollywood. We won't have much time because Andrea's on a tight schedule. What I need is for you to give me any suggestions on your secret gems that you don't really want anybody else find out about, so that we can truly enjoy lunch and be out within an hour while not feeling as if we'd been rushed. BTW, deep appreciation for all of your suggestions where I could take those same "adopted" granddaughters and her mother for her birthday. Going to Damon's Steak House in Glendale. As always....my deepest thanks. Jeff

Most likely because there aren'y any more like you and I who miss them. We also went to every Scandinavian Buffet in Los Angeles. And as for "romantic" those of today never learned what true romanticism was.

Romantic Dinner for Two Saturday Evening In Or Near SFV

Here we go again. My "adopted" granddaughter is having dinner tomorrow night (Saturday) with the still "love-of-her-life". Quiet and Romantic, any ethnicity, bar and preferably under $100.00. Need someone who's young enough to remember what "romantic" is. I'm 84 so I've forgotten. She asked me because every restaurant I've taken her, her sister, and their mother to for the past two years has been fantastic and exactly what I was looking for. (She doesn't know that every recommendation has come from Chowhound. ) Thanks....Jeff

Hi, Will. I disagree with absolutely nothing that you have said. For almost all of us in this age group, many memories cloud our heads, to be re-lived not as an angry (WHY????) but rather, as touches of loving tenderness. At 84, I am well aware of (and have always accepted) our monetary increases in cost just in order to be able to survive. I survive very well, and wouldn't change a thing. But when I say "I can remember when", I say it with a chuckle, not a curse. Stay well, Will. Jeff

Hi, baksngrvy. Thanks for the info. I'm not complaining. I like my life. Tremendously! Now and then I afford myself the luxury of remembering back when life was a lot more simple and luxuries were much more affordable. I've read many of the reviews on Clancy's and I'm somehat confused to see how many diners didn't like it. I'll take my guests either to Clancy's or to Damon's. Thanks again. Jeff

And in regard to the price of a tankful of gas........I must tell you one of my favorite memories. It was many years ago. My wife and I had just recently been married. I did a lot of car traveling around Boston because I used to play for shows at night while I went to college in the day time. Gas was very cheap (for those days). I pulled into a gas station where the gas was being sold at $0.17 per gallon. He was closed, so I pulled into the gas station across the street. His price was $0.21per gallon. I asked why their prices were so much higher than the station across the street. The attendant asked me what the place across the street was charging. I told him $0.17 per gallon. He asked me why I didn't buy the gas across the street. I told jhim it was because they were out of gas. And he answered....."Hell! When I'm out of gas, I sell it for $0.15 per gallon! Stay well, westsidegal. Jeff

I'm looking for a comfortable restaurant (within 15 miles of Shermn Oaks, Studio City, or Encino) that specializes in fresh fish (not shell fish), rather than a menu centered on meat or pasta with one or two fish choices. This is a birthday dinner. There doesn't seem to be any such restaurant around where I can have a dinner for four at a cost not to exceed $150.00. If I'm restricted to those three restaurants above, can anybody tell me which they prefer....and why? Two of the above, I've been to, but I know nothing about Hookdonfish, excerpt that their prices seem to be much too cheap for them to be able to serve great fish. Anything you can tell me will be deeply appreciated. Thanks, Jeff

Is it just my over-active imagination, or did I really know a time when I could take four guests to dinner at a really nice restaurant wihout breaking a hundred dollar bill? Perhaps I'm lucky that I'm as old as I am, since I obviously won't be going out to dinner much any more, and will (instead) have to rely on memories that I now wonder if they ever took place. Thanks, westsidegal. I'm going to miss you. Jeff
