ISO Good Cuban Restaurant (Not Versailles) in LA, East Valley, or Pasadena

I second El Floridita. A little pricey for dinner, but a great entertainment on the weekends. Restaurant.com has a pretty decent coupon if you want to check it out! Roasted chicken was awesome.

Looking for Visayan Bibingka

Yes! Would love that recipe! How is it different from Tagalog Bibingka?

3 Kings cake?

Thee's Bakery in the 3rd Street Farmer's Market on Fairfax! Call ahead, and make sure you remind them about the baby Jesus you want in it. They forgot my last baby Jesus. They can also add a fruit filling (which is more of a topping than a filling). And it was delicious. Good luck!

Need a restaurant recommendation-Los Feliz

Yuca's on Hillhurst for cochinita pibil burritos
Zanzabelle in Silverlake for a fixed price Friday or Saturday dinner.
Il Cappriccio's on Vermont for a quiet Italian dinner with homemade squid ink pasta.
The Alcove for lunch, dessert and coffee.

Golden state debuting lamb burger

The Alcove in Los Feliz has a decent one. You should order it medium though because medium well is a little too dry. I covered it in my blog: http://www.examiner.com/x-6069-LA-Burger-Examiner~y2009m4d7-Holy-Lamb-Burgers-Alcove

Enjoy!

Best Veggie Burger you've had?

Thanks everyone!!! You guys rock! So far I've tried the Alcove - good but a little mushy. And the one at Oinkster - satisfying, but nothing to write home about. I'll keep tasting!

Looking for Visayan Bibingka

This is for the Filipinos or Filipino aficionados in the house. My mother is Visayan Filipino and claims that the bibingka is different from Tagalog bibingka. Does anyone know where I can buy it? (I'll settle for a recipe,)

I need Filipino food!!

I second the Ube shake at Oinkster! SO GOOD!!!!

Best Veggie Burger you've had?

When I think of veggie burgers, I think of that woody patty you get in the frozen food section. I know there's something better out there in tasty LA. What are your suggestions?

has anyone been to zanzabelle's freight by night prix fixe dinners?

Hey, Scurvy -- I was at one of those other two tables! I loved the sea bass!

has anyone been to zanzabelle's freight by night prix fixe dinners?

I spoke to Matt (the chef) and Jackie (his wife & hostess). The price ranges depending on what they serve. They decided to go all out last weekend, so the price was higher. But, it was well worth it IMHO. The family dinner nights on Thursdays are less pricey. They'll do tacos or something casual and fun. Fridays and Saturdays I think are more formal so more expensive. We sat inside. It was warm and cozy with a view of the fun toys they have there. If you call the number on the EatLA post, the chef will tell you what the menu is.

has anyone been to zanzabelle's freight by night prix fixe dinners?

I just came back from dinner there tonight. $30 per person for a spectacular four course meal. It started off with a beef carpaccio dressed with a mustard vinaigrette and topped with fried leeks, followed by a Chilean bass, a sweet seared duck breast and an almond sorbet drizzled with dulce de leche. Everything was delicious and the atmosphere was quaint and cute. I definitely will be back!!!

Mardi Gras in L.A.?

Uncle Darrows is having a Mardi Gras party, but it's on the 28th and not on Fat Tuesday.

If you just want great food on Fat Tuesday, you could make a reservation at Harold & Belle's!

Metro courthouse jury duty: food options?

My bad, Ardaniel. Good luck!

Metro courthouse jury duty: food options?

Just served jury duty in December and here's what I found that's yummy:

Mendocino Farms: Great Sandwiches, but if you need something you can eat, they have great daily pasta salads that are mostly pretty soft
http://www.mendocinofarms.com/menu.aspx

And Grand Central Market: I can't tell you what in particular you can order, but it's an open air market with various food stands. I'm sure you'll be able to find something amazing that won't hurt you too badly.

Hope you feel better!

Chocolate Chip Cookie Cake?

Well, it's not very original, but Mrs. Fields has them. Here's the link:

You can also try calling Snookies Cookies and see if they'll custom make them for you.

Conchas in Hollywood/Los Feliz/Glendale?

I'm looking for a really good panaderia in the Hollywood / Los Feliz / Glendale area that makes conchas -- those pillowy, sugary Mexican pastries that hit the spot for morning coffee. Any ideas?

Lardons & Boudin in LA

I found Boudin at one of the butchers in the Farmers Market on 3rd St. (the one attached to the Grove). There are two butchers, and I believe it's the one next to Dupars.

Decent Bahn Mi in Hollywood?

Try the Viet Noodle Bar in Silverlake. They have a limited selection, but they have them! There are also a couple small places in Chinatown.

CARNE ASADA CARNE ASADA CARNE ASADA

Have you tried the carne asada burritos from Yucca's on Hillhurst in Los Feliz? Best I've had, and I think it's grilled.

has anybody tried the deli at Little Dom's yet?

Their muffuletta sandwiches are really good. They took me back to New Orleans. They also have big jars of the olive salad that you can buy. Not a sprawling selection for salads and sides, but good quality and very tasty. Also, a respectable meatball sandwich with large and tasty meatballs with just the right amount of sauce. I'll probably hit it once a week.

Seafood in Malibu for seafood boil?

I'm looking for a good, affordable place in Malibu to buy seafood for a seafood boil. I'm planning a boil near Neptune's Net, and I was thinking of buying the seafood there, but I wanted to check with you guys to see if there's a better place. I'm looking for good quality (and reasonable) shrimp, clams, crabs and maybe lobsters. Any ideas?

king cakes for mardi gras?

Try Thee's Bakery in the Famer's Market in the 3rd Street Promenade ((323) 937-1968). They usually have them during Mardi Gras Time (January and February), but you may be able to talk them into doing them now.

best delivery los feliz

Try Hong Kong Bistro - 323 957 1998 on Cahuenga. They deliver to Los Feliz. They have a large array of Asian goodies like Singapore Noodles, Chinese BBQ Pork Ribs and Garlic Beef. They even have sushi. It's the best Chinese delivery that I've found so far. I second Simply Thai for good Thai food delivery, although the portions are small, but really good quality.

Big Bear Update (Summer '07)

I just came back from Big Bear over the weekend, and I have to just tell everyone to stay away from the Peppercorn Grill. It was overpriced and tasteless. The service was slow and we waited over an hour for a table. I ordered the tilapia, and it was cafeteria quality at best -- definitely not worth the $18 I paid for it. On the other hand, we had a great experience at Madlons -- the cute little gingerbread cottage in Big Bear City. They served us even though the kitchen was closed. Everything we ordered was delicious and fresh. Service was amazing!

seeking good food and free wifi in LA area

Try....
Solar de Cahuenga
1847 N. Cahuenga (at Franklin)
Hollywood
(323) 467-7510

Free wifi and a large selection of crepes and omelette's. It's gotten mixed reviews from chowhounders, but I had a pretty good experience there, and I've always vowed to come back and bring my laptop. Good luck.

I have a craving for lumpia...

Max's of Manila in Glendale has pretty descent lumpia. Their fresh lumpia is better than their fried. It's kind of like a Filipino Sizzler in there, but it's great for comfort food. Also a good option for fried lumpia is finding a Filipino grocery store like a Maynila Market or Island Pacific and buying a package of frozen lumpia. Most of them taste pretty close to my mom's. (Which is the best lumpia I know of). You just need to know how to fry. Since you live on the outskirts, it's a good way to always have it handy!

Where to buy blue-cheese stuffed olives?

Have you tried Whole Foods? They have a large olive bar. I'm sure they have them.

Glendale

Portos Bakery on Brand Ave.! Great Cuban sandwiches, pastries and breads! They also have a nice selection of tropical smoothies. My favorite is the medianoche sandwich... very tasty!

My Endless Search For The Perfect Ribs

I have to admit, Houston's is one of my favorite chains. I was scared to say something, because there's always someone out there to reply and say I'm crazy and uncultured or something. But you're right. They're "fall off the bone," juicy and smokey. And I dream about their spinach dip every night.
