Can people offer suggestions of foods (savory and sweet) that they remember from the late 1970s? Trying to construct a dinner menu of foods popular in 1977-1978. Thanks for the help.

...another family friendly place that is also sort of 'grown-up' is Blue Smoke. It is not really in the neighborhoods you're discussing, but maybe worth the trip. My nephew and niece love it and their parents also have fun there. Landmarc in Tribeca, although formerly better than it is now, is an excellent choice with children. I haven't been there, but there is another Landmarc in the Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle.

Regarding Little Italy, not much is really good. However Lombardi's Pizza is excellent...in my recent experience the best pizza I know. It is very family friendly as well. It is located at 32 Spring Street. I agree that John's Pizza is also good, but recently much prefer Lombardi's. True is it not really in Little Italy, but only about 2 blocks north and better than most of what Little Italy has to offer.

Many shops on Lexington Avenue in the Upper 20's (lots of Indian run shops that have a good selection of spices)
Fairway (multiple locations), Zabars, Garden of Eden (multiple locations) and Gourmet Garage (multiple locations) all have decent selections of spices too.

I agree with Sister Sue. If they were invited for AFTER dinner drinks, they should have come ready for AFTER dinner drinks, thus AFTER their dinner. Of course in the end it depends on the relationship between guests and host. In this case, as the host is here asking about it, I think it would suggest that the relationship doesn't warrant this behavior.
I don't see the relevence to this conversation of the question of host/hostess gift or contribution to part of an event. That doesn't seem to be the issue about which the host asked.

I hadn't known that. Thank you for pointing it out. I've never been there when it was that crowded.
Best French Bistro in NYC?
Although I haven't been there yet, I have heard that the new Massif Central on Bleecker Street is really good. It realy specializes in that region's food including Bleu d'Auvergne.

I agree with Egit. Jubilee is lovely and great for mussels, among other things.
Grand Sichuan 9th Ave. closed?
Try Wu Liang Ye on 48th St. between 5th and 6th Aves as a sub. It is the best I've had in years. I particularly love their Dan Dan Noodles and Spicy Chicken w/Capsicum.

A Voce, on Madison and 26th. Defintely the best idea for a special Italian dinner. Elegant, modern and really excellent.

Cheap: Dimple on 30th St. Have dosas
Expensive: Devi on East 18th St.
Chinese: Wu Liang Ye on West 48th Street, Get the Chicken wth Capsicum, Dan Dan Noodles, Fish in Chili Oil and Miso sauce
Korean (Cheap): Mandoo Bar on West 32nd Street (excellent dumplings, particularly the Kimchee Mandoo)
Other: Annisa on Barrow Street in West Village (excellent, small) have their tasting menu
Lunch: Perry Street, Asiate, Le Bernardin, Eleven Madison Park. All have incredible prix fixe lunch menus, which are among the best values for great food I know.
Thai: Queens: Arunee on 79th St. in Jackson Heights, Sripraphai
Madison Square Garden
Mandoo Bar on 32nd Street between 5th Ave and Broadway. South side of st. One of the best, inexpensive Korean dumpling restaurants I know. Specifically order at least one portion of the Kimchee Mandoo (steamed dumpling stuffed with kimchee and pork). Most everything else, including the other mandoo (dumplings) on the menu is great. Many of the other Koren places for soup and bbq are also great and on the same block.

Tia Pol on 10th Ave at 22nd St. - my favorite tapas and great bar service.
Pasita on 8th Ave. at Jane St. is new and serving tapas style but more south american in actual food. Also nice pizzas. great selction of spanish and portugese wines. great bar service.
W.Vill/Soho Dinner, not too expensive/not rushed
I still love Mary's Fish Camp. Great lunch there today. Octopus app. is wonderful. Lobster roll as always is great. I also like Snack Taverna, Do Hwa, Perry St. (bargain lunch at 24. 7 days a week). Venture up to 17th St. and 8th Ave. for wonderful contamporary Thai and Japanese noodle soups and other items at Nooch.
What's new (and good) on UWS?
I just tried Kefi in 79th St. last night. Getting very popular, but despite cramped quarters, food was truly excellent and extremey reasonably priced. Octopus app. and Cod app. were particularly wonderful.
