Bacholorette Dinner!

I hosted a hen night party at Merkato 55 last year. The space is beautiful and fun, not touristy. The menu is diverse, and the drinks are great.

Kefi ?

I have been there a number of times and have always had a great experience. The food is inexpensive, good portions, and very good. Highly recommended.

Upper West Side, cool spots and tasty food on a low budget

St. James Gate on Amsterdam and 81st. You could get lunch for just over $10. And dinner within your budget. If you don't eat there, go in for a few pints. Happy hour Monday through Friday is $1 each. The place is great and the food and service is wonderful.

Best Pub (Non Upper East Side Frat Party)

Try St. James Gate on the UWS, 81st and Amsterdam. Great pub grub, great drinks, bartenders and servers are wonderful. The crowd is more mature, not pitchers, no jello shots. I always find it comfortable and fun.

Top Steak in NYC

As far as Argentinean Steak goes...I have been to Buenos Aires on East 6th about 15 times and love it. It isn't up there with Keens, The Palm, or Strip House...much cheaper, and pretty good. The salads are no good. The empanadas and chimichurri are wonderful. Try it out. Have a glass of Malbec...or a bottle. Steak with Garlic Fries.

NY Chowhound seeks SF Chowhound Help!!

A group of four including myself will be in SF for 4 days. We need some help with food.
Our major problem is on of us needs a veggie friendly menu, the rest of us are fine with Meat and Seafood. We don't want to spend a fortune, but don't mind shelling out a bit for better food. (definitely less than $50 per person, if possible. We are staying near Union Square. I already know I want to try the Slanted Door for sure. Any other suggestions? Also good to note, While I am a foodie and am willing to try anything, 2 in our group are not so much. Maybe we should just hunker down in TGIFridays (ewww)...We don't mind traveling around a bit. Thanks in advance.

St. James Gate

I started another thread and lost it, just wanted to know who has tried St. James Gate on 81st and Amsterdam? I have been a few times to eat and a few other times to sit at the bar and chat up the irish bartenders. It is great. Go check it out and eat there!! Love to support unique neighborhood places on the UWS.

Wonderful New Pub/Restaurant on UWS

Yes they are opened for lunch/brunch (sat/sun) and dinner. Had brunch there Saturday and it was really really good. The outdoor seating is great and the service and ambiance is wonderful. Go try it out!!!

Wonderful New Pub/Restaurant on UWS

Just had to let everyone know about a great place I had dinner at this week. St. James Gate on Amsterdam and 81st. It is new, where Louie's used to be. The food is GREAT. We had quesadillas and smoked salmon platter and calamari for apps. They were all great. The smoked salmon especially. For entrees we had Fish and Chips, Sliders, and Shepherd's Pie. All really good. Great drinks and a great bar that was pretty packed, but no annoying on a tuesday evening. Service was attentive but not too much. Highly recommended!! Had been to their old place once in midtown east. This place blows the top off. Go there!!

Recipes You've Never Heard of Outside Your Family

Oh I love this thread.
I used to make PB and Tomato on Toast. Mostly because we had a LOAD of tomatoes at the end of the summer.

Also Iceberg lettuce, 1000 Island Dressing, and Cottage Cheese, with Sunflower seeds on top. Still eat it all the time.

My mom's version of spanikopita is my fave. More like a calzone because she used whole wheat bread dough with some spinach, garlic mixture inside. Still have her make it everytime I go home.

Good, authentic Mexican in Manhattan?

Taco Taco on 2nd and 91st (I believe) is really good. They have great soft tacos. Plain and simple good Mexican food!

Good, Reasonable Place Near St. Marks...

Any suggestions for a dinner near St. Marks? Not too expensive, any type of food. Have already tried Holy Basil and of course Mermaid Inn, Hearth, Una Pizza Napoletana, Momofuku, and S'Mac. Any other gems in the area?

Help a vegetarian find his seitan (gluten "meat")

Candle Cafe is great. They are on 3rd right around 75th. Vegan rest. A little pricey, but really good food. Am not a veggie and I eat there all the time.

Recs for Manhattan dinner with suburban 14 year old?

Trailer Park is right by the theater. Don't know about ice cream, but I'm pretty sure they have it. The menu is limited...sloppy joes, burgers, tater tots...etc. Pretty good "bad" food. Plus the place is fun, kitchy.

Recipes You've Never Heard of Outside Your Family

We had something called Love Soup. Don't know where it came from but I make it all winter long. Best the day after it's made.

1 can of kidney beans
1 can of cannellini beans
1 package of frozen spinach
1 large can of crushed tomatoes
1 small can of tomato paste
1 whole keilbasa
Enough chicken or veg stock to cover.
put it all in a big pot and cook until warmed through.
It's really much better the next day.

Upper East Side Spanish

Taco Taco is on 2nd between 89 and 90. The soft tacos are OUTSTANDING. They also have great guac and spicy Michelada's and great margaritas. Don't know if that is what you meant, but I go there all the time. It's tiny and cheap, but really good. (Mustang Grill is disgusting- don't even try it) Sabor a Mexico is also good, on 1st in the 90's, I think. I always order-in from their and the food is not too expensive and above par!!

Theater District Late Lunch

Going to a Matinee on Sunday and need a late lunch, or post-matinee dinner in the area. Mid-range price is fine or cheaper, something GOOD. Most of the places I have visited in that area are glorified Applebee's. Any suggestions? We are pretty adventerous and love food!!

Where to Find the best Falafel in NY?

There is this great little place in the diamond district in the alley between 5th and 6th and it's kind of btwn. 48th and 49th. It's in a little arcade. It's a booth so you can't sit but it's seriously GREAT!

"New York" Italian

You could also try Mezzaluna on the upper east side or Antonucci's. Not really "NY" Italian, but both Very good!!!!! My personal faves on the UES

any suggestions for a relaxed pub/bar with food / music Flatiron / Union Square area

St. James Gate is good, on 2nd btwn. 52nd and 51st. Lots of pubs in that area, but St. James had really good food. Recommended dishes are the Shepards Pie, Sliders, Quesadillas, Fish and Chips. Nice presentation, good drinks, not crazy prices, and really nice bartenders, or table service if you'd rather!!!

All kinds of food! I am planning Veritas or something for a really great (expensive) meal, and then need some fillers for the rest of the time!! Stick to Manhattan, but anywhere really.

later is better. If you go early, even right before they open, you end up standing in line for EVER. It's worth it though. Are they open for dinner?
