The one must eat restaurant in Istanbul

You could skip the salad bar and go straight to the mains I'm sure. The mains were amazing, and I'd highly recommend. The salad bar was quite mezze focused, and I love mezze so that was perfect. But you wouldn't be compelled to eat it!

No, still the same! The salad bar you just help yourself to, and then they weigh it. The mains are the part that you point to. They cook different things each day, and you go and have a look at all the pots, and they explain what everything is. You just point to what you want and they bring it to you. The food was great!

Athens, Santorini & Istanbul Recs needed

A great place for lunch in Istanbul is Sultanahmet KÖFTECISI (not the one with a similar name right by it). There was a queue when we went but it moved fast. Great food, and a good price.

The one must eat restaurant in Istanbul

We went a few weeks ago and I have a few places to recommend...

Ciya, on the Asian side, is great. Really worth trying, different from restaurants on the European side. You start with a salad bar (pay by weight) and then mains are different each day. I would suggest going for lunch as the last ferry back to the European side was around 8pm.

Hamdis, by the spice market was also great. Eat on the top floor if you can, the view is amazing. Great mezze and kebabs.

We also had dinner one night down by the Bosphorus, just a random place with tables out by the water, where they grilled fish and bought salad and bread. No licence so no alcohol but not expensive at all!

Central London reccs, on a budget - also for Oxford, Newbury

I love the Magdalen Arms, it's always my top recommendation for Oxford. However, it's slightly outside the city centre, and may not be that convenient for lunch. My absolute favourite sandwich place in Oxford is Olives, in the High Street (by Queen's, opposite exam schools and University College). You can't sit down there, but the sandwiches are amazing.

Agreed, there's loads of stuff in Kings Cross/St Pancras. Leon is good, and there's also a Giraffe, which is always reliable.

Reasonably priced food - Islington/Angel

I'm a big fan of Delhi Grill too, definitely worth a try.

Current Favorite Dish/Item for Less Than $10

Ok, I finally went for lunch today, Jeserf. I had the veg and chevre panini, which really was very good. I was very disappointed that they were out of the cold cucumber soup, but I do intend to go back. Thanks for the recommendation.

I believe it's House Side. Second and Independence I think, down the side of the James Madison Library of Congress building. I've been meaning to go for weeks...

Long lunches

I finish interning this week, and I then have a few weeks hanging around DC, doing some more touristy stuff, sleeping, shopping and eating :)

I am looking for recommendations for the best weekday lunch/brunch offers, particularly buffet-style, so that my unpaid intern friends and I can make the most of the great restaurants in DC, but on the cheap.

Thank you :)

A week of DC Eating

My parents came to visit me in DC, and as an unpaid intern, I was pleased to take the opportunity to go to some good restaurants! We are generally unfussy eaters, with the exception of one sister who is a little harder to please. Choosing where to eat was difficult-I changed my mind constantly! But here is a summary of where we went:

Old Ebbitt Grill: I know it's not the most popular place, but it was pretty perfect for what we wanted-it was close to our hotel, which was good as my parents had flown in from the UK, and it served good, American food. I thought that the crab cakes were lovely.

Etete: as recommended on here. It was all of our first experience of Ethiopian food, and we all loved it. We ordered lentil sambusas to start and then shared the vegetarian plate and a selection of meat dishes. My favourite was the derek tibs, I think. I have since been to Meskerem in Adams Morgan, which was also good, but I think that Etete was better.

Oya: although not everyone raves about this place, we thought that the food and decor were perfect, although it was very empty. We shared a selection of sushi dishes, some small plates, and some edamame and udon noodles. The best thing was probably the seabass on oxtail. No need for a knife!

Central: Fantastic space, great food, wonderful service. Shrimp burger was amazing, as was the pear sorbet. Everything we tried was delicious, and I loved the homemade mayo.

Jaleo: we stuck to tapas, and it was great (we all love Spanish food). We had quite a good selection, the service was prompt, and everything tasted good. Patatas bravas could have been hotter!

Fogo de Chao: soo much food, but both the salad bar and the meat were delicious. Especially the filet minion. I'd love to go back, but I'm not sure that any of us interns will be paying $45...

All in all, a pretty good week!

Saturday breakfast in Eastern Market

We went a couple of weeks ago for Saturday lunch, and found the line moved quickly, the food was excellent, and the service whilst not perfect, was still pretty good.

Capital Hilton

My parents stayed there for a week, and on the night that they arrived, looking for somewhere close and American (they had just flown in from the UK) we went to the Old Ebbitt Grill. Not everyone on here is a fan, I know, but we thought it was very good, if a little noisy, and we had excellent crabcakes.

Other nights we were generally near Federal Triangle, downtown, which is definitely in walking distance. I will post a full review shortly.

Saturday breakfast in Eastern Market

I also like Bread and Chocolate. There's always a line there, but the food was great! I think that their pancakes were more like French crepes than fat American pancakes though.

Central Michel Richard Review

I ate there this week, and I have to agree that the food and the ambiance are truly spectacular, and well worth the price tag. Not overpriced at all. All our food was delicious, although I think that I preferred the shrimp to the tuna burger, and I wish we had tried to Lobster. I hope to go back soon.

Passover Quinoa

My favourite way to cook quinoa is:
While cooking, add spices and stock, which ever spices take your fancy, but I like cumin and corriander/cilantro. Obviously, this depends on what is available on Pesach
Mix cooked, cooled quinoa with a selection of roasted veg, dried fruits-I like apricots-and herbs. Use nuts/seeds when available.

I also didn't know quinoa was KLP, so thanks for the info.

Hungry Bostonians visiting D.C. - need suggestions!!

Bars and clubs... my suggestions would be to go down to either Adams Morgan (18th St), Georgetown, or U Street Areas, particularly Adams Morgan, which are full of bars, and just pick one that looks good!
I will let others get started with the food...

Pesach in DC

Thanks, I have found the website, and think I can get there. I am a British student living alone in DC for a few months, without any of my usual Jewish resources to turn to!

That doesn't sound too complicated, you should be able to find somewhere easily.
Tea-I like Fortnum and Masons, but other people will have other suggestions, I'm sure.
As for 15, I've heard good things, but I believe that you may be too late for reservations. I would call now.

Pesach in DC

Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get Kosher for Pesach groceries etc in the DC area? So far, by visiting a few Safeways and Giants, I have only found a dismal selection of Matza. Anywhere Metro accessible would be great.

Thank you!

Brits Visiting DC

hanks for all your suggestions, everyone. So far, I have booked Old Ebbitt Grill for Friday night, because it is so close, and I have managed to book Central for one night too. I figured it was worth trying if my parents are paying!!

We will probably go for sushi one night, am I right in thinking that Sushi Taro is the best place to go?

I think I'd also like to try Zyatinya, and Ten Penh.
Then I guess Ethiopian one night, and maybe Oohs and Aahs, plus Taqueria Distrito Federal... and I'm out of nights!

What do you all think?

kid-friendly in Belgravia/Victoria

IMO, Pizza Express is always a good option, their pizzas are good, as are their salads, and yes, so is the wine! Wagamamas is also a reliable bet, and there's no need to book a table or anything. Both are incredibly child friendly.and reasonably priced. And better than going to the pub next door to the theatre anyway! Its' a great show, by the way, enjoy!
