Beltline area Calgary
I would choose Chili Club over Thai Sa-On. I find Thai Sa-On to be hit or miss, and the service usually leaves something to be desired. Chili Club is a bit more expensive, but the food is always spectacular, probably the best Thai I've had in the city. The service is always great, too. (Thai Sa-On does have the best thai spring rolls, though.)
New Mex on 17th SW? (Cgy)
Calgary is definitely lacking in awesome and authentic mexican places. I'm excited for this place to open. I love the idea of a late-night walk-up window!
The Perfect Grilled Cheese
My roommate just had a wine and cheese party for his birthday - so that meant tons of left-over cheese! So the other day I made up a new grilled cheese sandwich for fun. It turned out pretty well.
-2 slices of crusty artisan "farmers" white bread (also left-over from party)
-Brie cheese
-Thinly sliced yellow onion
-Dried cranberries
-Butter one side of each piece of bread
-Cook on medium/low heat, have patience because the onions need time to get soft and delicious. Try to flip only once. Press sandwich down when cooking to make it flatter.
And that's it! For normal everyday grilled cheese I use the typical ingredients (white or whole grain bread, cheddar - not processed, butter) but I've ALWAYS added very thinly sliced onions to it. It's the way my dad has always made grilled cheese and I love it. Served with sweet bread n' butter pickles and ketchup on the side. Sometimes I'll add a little touch of sriracha to the ketchup because I'm addicted to the stuff. Yum!
calgary's best kept secrets
I just had an amazing lamb souvlaki wrap at Crete Souvlaki (2623-17 Ave SW) the other day. The place is also a gas station! People generally just get take-out there, but they have a couple tables where you can sit to eat a quick lunch. Everything was fresh and delicious and served in styroform - I don't think I'll eat Opa ever again.
Lord Sandwich (Calgary) [moved from Canada board]
I've been eating at Jimmy's for years. I just get really annoyed when I order my usual falafel and I get the employees arguing with me about my preference to have the garlic sauce over the tahini.
Earls vs. Joeys
Your experience with the Earl's salad sounds much like my own! Did they forget the warm roasted beets in your warm roasted beets salad too?
I'm working on an article and am curious what Calgarians consider to be the best of Calgary.
Vue Cafe for lunch, most def.
Looking for lunch...in Sunridge (Calgary)
It's individual sized pizza that you can eat there or take-out. You can get it baked there or frozen.
New Crave Cupcakes (Cgy)
I think Crave is a little overrated. Their peanut butter icing is good on the chocolate cupcake... but I don't like the price or the wait time that comes with all that hype.
Calgary: It's downtown dining week!
Avoid "Ty's". First they served my water in a chipped glass, then my food came with a special surprise... A hair.
