Great Bourbon Drink Recipe
I had limited supplies and needed to come up with a bourbon cocktail. Found this recipe online for something called a "basin stree." Anyway, it's great! 2 oz. bourbon, 1 oz. cointreau, and 1 oz. lemon juice. It actually called for triple sec, but all I had was cointreau. You're supposed to shake with ice then strain, but I just poured ice into the tumble I mixed it in. Anyone else heard of it?
Paolo's vs. Gelateria Modica
Just went to Paolo's the other day and my verdict is: really bad and nothing compared to Gelateria Modica. They list a gazillion flavors on the website but only had six that day. I got dolce de leche and tiramisu. They were both way too sweet and I couldn't tell them apart. My friend got limoncello and said it tasted like the cheap versions of the drink. Paolo was also very rude and I almost handed back the gelato saying I didn't want it if he was going to act like such a jerk. Has anyone else had such a bad experience?
SNOB??? (Charleston, S.C.)
Is SNOB really as great as everyone makes it out to be?
I normally go to 39 Rue de Jean when I'm in Charleston for lunch, but I've heard such great things about SNOB I'm a bit curious.
Also...any other lunch reccomendations?
Which healthy substitutes actually taste better to you?
Actually, I buy baked potato chips at Earthfare and they're really good. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they're bad. I use the real stuff all the time, but sometimes I've found that I also enjoy the "healthier" items. If I was having people over for chips and salsa I wouldn't buy baked, but if it's just me, sure...why not?
Which healthy substitutes actually taste better to you?
smart balance instead of butter and barilla + pasta, turkey burgers, sometimes replace the mayo in tuna salad w/ cottage cheese (esp. if making melts), Newman's Own "light" dressings are pretty good, baked instead of fried tortillas.
Great New Salad
I love hummus, so I always keep a fresh batch in the fridge. So, today I thought I'd try something new. I made a salad with romaine, carrots, cucumber and cherry tomatoes, then I took what was left of my hummus and mixed in enough balsamic vinegar so that it was runny. I used this as a dressing on the salad and it's great!
Family restaurants columbia, sc
haha...I didn't read your post! My mother's office just hosted a party there and she said the food was really good. BTW note to any columbians: went to capitol cafe today for lunch and liked it alot. I got the chicken gyro...just ok, have had much better (zorba's is pretty good) but my friend got the shrimp burger which was delicious. Cookie for dessert was good, but I prefer mine chewy. Anyway, I love the seating area and can't wait to try breakfast (SWEET POTATO PANCAKES!!!). I have a slight obsession with sweet potatoes...

For a good quality meal Hapton St. Vineyard is probably your best bet, though I've also heard good things about Saluda's. Both are expensive. For less expensive I may try Harper's. It's not a bad ambaience and the foods pretty good.
Do Italians put chicken on pasta?
I think even in the two seperate courses there wouldn't be that many calories. When I would visit my family in Italy most of the time we would have some type of pasta for lunch and then dinner would be grilled meat of some sort, fresh bread and a salad. Breakfast isn't really a big deal...melba toast or yogurt. I miss those meals.
Leftover corn on the cob?
Make a pasta with corn and gorgonzola and a little cream...comes from the Union Square Cafe cookbook. You could make a corn salad + there's a great recipe on this site under sides for corn with goat cheese, basil, and roasted red peppers.
Keeping Ice Cream Cake Frozen
I don't really think it would stay frozen that long. off topic...but I baby-sat for this family and they'd had a birthday party with a B&J ice cream cake and the mother had stored it in the fridge. That's one sure way NOT to store an ice cream cake!
Do Italians put chicken on pasta?
There's a Lidia Bastianich recipe for a shrimp and leek pasta and she instructs to serve it with cheese.
Do Italians put chicken on pasta?
haha...great! I get annoyed when people are like you said, 6 generations away from the mother country, yet talk about themselves like they got off the boat yesterday. I call myself swiss...even though I was born here...but at least I have a passport and have lived there.
Do Italians put chicken on pasta?
I think the key thing in Italy when combing a protein with pasta is that it works its way into the pasta. For example, the meat is either shredded or ground (ragu or bolognese), chopped into tiny bits (amatriciana, carbonara, etc.) or is seafood (mashed anchovies, tuna, shrimp, crab, lobster, etc.) which are all relatively smaller in size or if a fish broken into smaller pieces. I think Americans like to see the meat, therefore a large slab on top or thick slices is the preference. I've had this non-traditional way of combining meat and pasta and while it's not my favorite (because I tend to prefer the more traditional pastas) it has been very good and if there's an issue with authenticity just acknowledge the fact that you aren't trying to create an traditional dish.

If you break the noodles then you wouldn't really be able to twirl them on the fork as well.
Unusual or Funky Ice Cream Flavours
basil...good recipe on epicurious.
earl grey tea.
look at Il Laboratorio Del Gelato's website and they have all their flavors listed...some of which are very original.
Ideas for frozen waffles
Yes...on Anthony Bourdian's show he tried it and said it was pretty nasty. I think he went to Roscoe's in LA.
on a pasta dinner mission- need recipes!
Another favorite summer pasta is diced avocado, sundried tomato, basil and parsley, goat cheese, and diced red onion. Add hot cooked pasta to all those ingredients and add olive oil, salt, and pepper as desired.
Ideas for frozen waffles
This morning I toasted them up then topped them with a sliced banana cooked in butter and a touch of maple syrup and then topped it with some greek yogurt. Really good. I have the buckwheat/health food kind and I think they'd be good with some peanut butter, as people have mentioned above.

Barilla + angel hair is the only angel hair I like. You can also make a good cacio e pepe (equal parts pecorino and parmigiano + equal parts butter and olive oil + lots of freshly grated pepper). There's a recipe on Epicurious that's devine for a spaghetti with cauliflower, olives, and almonds. Lots of good fats and proteins in there. Also, since it's summer just a nice pesto, and you could maybe add some peas.
Ideas for frozen waffles
I have an entire box of frozen waffles and I like waffles straight-up but I was wondering if anyone had original ways of eating waffles...i.e. waffle sandwiches and the like. Help me, please!
What is the deal with chicken fingers/tenders/nuggets? [moved from Not About Food]
Try Zaxby's chicken tenders...they're pretty good though I must say Chik-fil-a's some of the best. I'm not crazy about them but I will eat the. I think people like them so much because they're relatively bland and filling. Alot of people order them at fast food places b/c the no-bun issue. Actually, they have more calories than a plain burger...but I suppose they're more filling.
What's wrong with "full-fat"??
I admit I will buy lower-fat verions of items (sour cream, 2% milk, yogurt...though mainly b/c that's the most frequently available). Some things are ok with lower fat content...though I never buy nonfat. Also, the lower the fat content the higher the sugar content. I never shy away from really cheeses, butter, nuts, avocadoes, etc. I believe full fat satisfies you more and therefore results in eating less of the product. Lower-fat items can lead you to feeling deprived of flavor and you also tend to eat more since it is "low-fat" and end up consuming the same amount of calories anyway. I just say eat in moderation and eat naturally...the amount of fat is really not all that important.
What is the best brand of plain nonfat yogurt?
I found an afterataste with the woodstock as well. I think buffalo milk, like sheep or goats, just has an peculiar taste.
What is the best brand of plain nonfat yogurt?
Yeah...I kniw it's $$$. So is Fage. That's why I make my own (though honestly prefer storebought) or buy the Brown Cow. I really love the coffee flavored buffalo yogurt.
