I realize this is an old thread but I'd like to bring it back to life.
I'm a food blogger and very recently a personal chef. I was recommended to take over two clients for someone who couldn't cook for them anymore; of course I jumped at the chance. I'm a good cook, but not a great cook. I'm attending a boot camp at the CIA in Oct but otherwise have had no training, and until six years ago never cooked at all.
My question? Is it possible to speed up the process of refining my palate? I feel very strongly that I would be a much better cook/chef if I could simply taste my food and be able to know exactly what to add...a little salt here, something to counterbalance something there...you get the idea. Any tips or tricks on ways to train this coveted "skill" (for lack of a better word)?
And, I apologize for hijacking the thread. Perhaps it's okay since it's an old one? ;-)

We ate there several months ago and really enjoyed it. It was pricey, but we thought the food was very good. We meant to go back over the summer to enjoy the outside seating, but it's already slipping away on us. Thanks for the reminder that we need to get there again soon.

I agree with so many things on this board! But the one thing for me that I absolutely, under no circumstances can EVER compromise on is MUSHROOMS!! Fresh ONLY. Canned are pure tire rubber, in my opinion!
brunch in annapolis area?
Well, I unfortunately didn't get your responses before deciding where to eat, but fortunately it apparently didn't matter as we decided on Carrol's Creek by pure chance; it was delicious, not to mention fairly affordable with good service. I did get a chuckle from the Buddy's warnings...we moved to Maryland from CA last year and had asked our realtor where a good place to eat in Annapolis was - you know, somewhere that only the locals really know about. And they told us to go to...you guessed it...BUDDY'S. We went once, and have never returned. It's actually become sort of a joke...we might not know where to go, but we know where NOT to go!

Red Robin- First Visit Reviews
I really like Red Robin. It's about the only burger-type chain that I truly enjoy consistently. We moved out of state so we haven't been there for a couple of years, but they were good back then. Bottomless fries is a great marketing tool. Instead of piling them up and everyone leaving their plates half full with wasted fries, they give you a portion that you can actually finish. I rarely ordered seconds...seems to me to be a great way to save money and provide customer service in the process. They've got an awesome turkey burger, too!

There's a great article in the current issue of Cook's Illustrated called "How to Buy a Good Balsamic Vinegar". The did taste tests and they rate the best, which are not necessarily always the most expensive.

1/2 Between Baltimore and Annapolis
We moved to MD about a year ago and fell in love with Garry's...we ate there several times a week. Mid-summer we had a baby girl so we stopped eating out altogether for about six months or so, and something happened to Garry's in the meantime. They changed their menu, the staff is all new, and the few times we've been back the food was okay at best. We don't think we'll go back again for a long time.
Prepared Pasta Sauce ... WHY???
What's interesting to me is how snobby people can be about food! I suppose I do fall into that category myself concerning certain items; for instance, I can't understand how anyone can use "cream of (fill in the blank) soup" to make casseroles, gravies, etc. It makes me cringe a bit - I'll admit it! But jarred pasta sauces can be very good. In fact, Cooks Illustrated did a taste test some time back and put several brands on their "highly recommended" list. I do love a homemade marinara, and certainly it's easy to make, but I have no issues admitting that I keep jars of pasta on hand for those rare nights when even making a simple sauce seems like too much (with two small children, those nights are less rare than they used to be).

Not sure how to respond to that...I'm going to go with assumption that you're kidding and you don't think anyone could seriously be that stupid. I've had cream of crab soup many, many times and it's always delicious when there are lumps of crabmeat and not just the puree. If the lumps had been crab, it might have been a good soup!

I know it's been there forever, and I know it comes highly recommended...but my husband and I ate a Chick & Ruth's and thought it was disgusting. Maybe we just ordered the wrong thing on the menu; my cream of crab soup tasted awful and had the texture of soup out of a can, with lumps everywhere. I guess to each his own! All that being said, I think it's a place you just have to try at least once.

Squisito's rules! Great pizza and pasta. Tuesday night is buy one pasta get one for...$3.99 I believe. They don't deliver, however, but I wish they did!
Annapolis for lunch? Ideas
Reynold's Tavern serves a decent tea/lunch; I've taken my mom there and she really enjoyed it. Not as quaint as some other tea houses I've been to (not that I'm an expert), but nice nonetheless. I've also heard that their other menu items are very good. It's also nice to go somewhere with a bit of history (easy to do in Annapolis!).
