I agree with bostonzest. Those are not "go to" restaurants here in Boston. Island Creek Oyster House is a big open dining restaurant with a very cool atmosphere and great seafood. Neptune is great but you'll likely wait a long time to get a table since it's so small. Another one to add to the list is B&G Oyster on Tremont Street in the South End neighborhood: bandgoysters.com

Best burger in Raleigh?
Having been down a couple times since my original post, I've now tried the burger at Raleigh Times and Porters Tavern. I'd give the slight edge to Porters, but I like the energy at Raleigh Times itslef much better. Maybe next stop is Mojoe's from all the thumbs up there.
Where would Guy Fieri visit if he were in Boston.
GREAT place! I've been there many times. The sweet potato fries with the homemade ketchup is awesome. Too far from Boston for this post probably.
Best burger in Raleigh?
ok, so as mentioned in a previous post, i'm traveling to raleigh for the first time. one of the things i try to seek out on a trip is the best burger. i will be staying downtown raleigh, but could travel to neighboring areas too. No Fuddruckers or anything....i saw this posted for something else and had to laugh. nothing i can get elsewhere in the country. Thank you all!
Restaurant advice in downtown Raleigh
thanks, LL. we're in our mid-30's so not looking for a place over run with those crazy college kids. :-) she was psyched when i brought up Jibarra because she's never been there. maybe Sitti on Saturday night because she's a fan.
HELP! We need some good food cheap!!
Definitely try Gaslight (Harrison Ave. in South End)...bistro style french food but very good and entree prices are reasonable. The atmosphere and decor are somewhat reminiscent of being in an authentic bistro.
Outside of French cuisine, the Orinocco suggestion is definitely worth a visit, and once again Franklin Cafe for great reasonable american menu.
Inexpensive birthday dinner for a foodie?
Two words...Franklin Cafe. I would opt for their original location on Shawmut Ave. in the South End, though they don't take reservations, so if you show up peak hours you can expect to wait an hour+. That said, it's small, great energy, fantastic food, and all entrees are under $20. Franklin Southie is mentioned below and that is their sister restaurant in South Boston, which is also very good...different menu items but still same concept price wise and their atmosphere is also very cool.
Coppa is another good choice and menu aims to stay at $15 and less, but smaller portions. Since this just opened up within the month and is one of Ken Oringer's places, you can expect to wait awhile on a weekend. Good news is that Franklin Cafe is across the street to have drinks while you wait.
Boston Convention Center - Fort Point Area
I would suggest Franklin Cafe-Southie for sure. It's a 10 minute walk from Lucky's/Sportello or a very inexpensive cab ride if the weather is lousy. The original Franklin in South End is one of my all-time faves and this one is also excellent. All entrees are under $20 and it has a great atmosphere.
If you must stay in the Fort Point area, i have to agree with Luckys, seeing this has served as a second home for me for the last 7 years. Yes, it's in a basement, but it's excellent for "bar food" and it's atmosphere is one of a kind.
Return to Boston 15 years later, need recs !
Via Matta is a great choice if you want to stay in the Back Bay area. I always seem to get one of their fresh pasta dishes. I 2nd the recommendation below on Erbaluce...great authentic food without the "vibe" that comes with Via Matta....depends on what you're looking for. Though Erbaluce will only have beer/wine/cordials where Via Matta has a full bar. Ofcourse if you decide to travel to the North End neighborhood, Prezza is fantastic.
Try to get to the Parish Cafe (Boylston Street location) for one of your lunches. Their menu focuses on "gourmet sandwiches" that local chefs have dreamed up, and it also has a full bar. It's a must.

Thank you both for this follow up. So maybe Jibarra and Pooles might be best for a Friday and Saturday night out? Solas also looked like an option, maybe even if its for drinks.
Restaurant advice in downtown Raleigh
I will be in Raleigh for the first time this month, and would like to get further advice in addition to previous posts. I'm going out with someone for the first time so wanted to go a place with a good bar atmosphere as well as the food. From previous posts, 18 Seaboard, Jibarra, and Poole's Diner all sound great...just wondering if any of these also have good energy/atmosphere as well? Any other suggestions are welcome.
Single guy looking for bar/restaurant with good food & atmosphere...
I arrived to downtown San Fran today and was supposed to meet a friend who is not coming until tomorrow now. I am looking for a place i can go to solo with good food, drink, and atmosphere. Something with somewhat of a single scene wouldnt hurt. I am staying in Union Square but I don't mind traveling to other parts of the city. Thank you for any help!
Old School Boston?
if you havent been to Locke-Ober, i think its a must. Its expensive and not the best restaurant in the city, but its like being in a part of history, and its a very nice room.
Cancun....help!
so, i'm going on a company sales trip to Cancun and staying at the Westin. its a small group and we're foodies. can you help with some good recommendations...either local places or just really good restaurants in hotels, resorts, etc?? thank you!
Coming from Boston to go on a date...
thank you lucia. any faves out of those for a nice atmosphere without being overly loud? any opinion on Grace, Bar Carrera, or Peasant? i plan to go to Spotted Pig one night...
Coming from Boston to go on a date...
i have been to NYC many times but dont know the restaurants very well. looking for a nice atmosphere, not stuffy, not too loungey, but with great food, moderately priced. I'm thinking Gramercy Tavern-like (Tavern part), but it could be Italian cuisine, etc. Thank you...
fun, not too pricey dinner in cambridge/somerville?
Green Street is a good one. Dali in Somerville is good, tapas style, good sangria, & fun atmosphere. probably a wait though....just more sangria time: http://www.dalirestaurant.com/home.html
South Beach restaurant advice...
hi AG, thank you for the info. we'll give Joes a try during the day. any word on Escopazza? what are your favorites? any places downtown that might be worth the trip....Grass?
yes, in for the Pats game. we've been coming down for about 5 years now. any advice on places to meet single girls that arent too clubby?
thanks again,
Dvive
South Beach restaurant advice...
Me and a couple of friends are going to South Beach next weekend and I was looking for restaurant advice for a few single guys. I have been down there several times before and have been to places like The Blue Door, Tantra, Pearl, China Grill, Spiga, Touch, etc. We are looking for food first, atmosphere second. We can always go somewhere for drinks/atmosphere after a great meal. Are there any hidden gems that are worth while? Are any of these worth the trip: Barton G? Mararena Tavern? Balans? Joes Stone Crab?
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
Arriving in Boston tomorrow!!!!
i think most are right in that alot of the historical places aren't going to serve up a great meal. if any, i would have to side with Jacob Wirth.
For best Italian: Prezza in the North End, or Via Matta in the Back Bay (this could serve up as your really nice meal out too); otherwise, you can still do a less expensive great mean in the North End at Terramia (my fave)or Antico Forno.
For seafood...B&G Oyster or Great Bay for the nicer places, and for more casual: Daily Catch and the Barking Crab.
For just overall great restaurants: No 9 Park, Mistral, Eastern Standard
Best place for Foie Gras
they may not change their menu often, but Mistral's is awesome...seared foie gras on brioche, duck confit, tart cherry chutney. wow.
Weekend in Boston
Cuchi is a good idea, if you want to go to Cambridge.Have to say Franklin Cafe for sure. Its small, but good vibe and usually cool music playing. but you may have to wait an hour+ for a table. Toro is cool but the bill adds up very fast with the price of their tapas. Eastern Standard is a huge bistro style place with good food and scene. Pho Republique in the S. End is a Vietnamese style, great drink list, and very cool vibe.
If you had to choose one for tonight...for chef
Franklin Cafe is one of the best in the city, and all entrees are less than $20. Shouldnt be too big of a crowd on a Monday night (there are only 10 tables and bar). Toro is an awesome experience, but I have spent a lot of dough there when i have gone. The tapas may start at $4, but all the good ones are $8-$15. Otherwise, Tremont 647 is good. My absolute fave is No 9 Park. Everyone thinks pricey automatically, but if you stick with their bar menu, it's all about $20 or less. If you sit at the bar, the bartenders will make the night with their drinks and knowledge. I also think ES is great place.
Terramia for RW - recommendations?
hi gator, Terramia is one of my favorites in the city. its small, rustic and unpretentious. the lobster fritters are a big appetizer hit. i usually get a pasta for a meal because they're all fresh. i'm not too up to speed on the dessert part.
Aruba...
I went 5 years ago, and agree that the Flying Fishbone was outstanding, and you definitely want to request a table on the beach! Its quite a ride from the lowrise section...probably 20-30 minute drive. I rented a 4x4 vehicle for 24 hours to explore the island and then drove back and forth to the restaurant that 1 night.
Dining at the Atlantis....
i was at Atlantis a couple of years ago and ate at Dune (its not in Atlantis, but on Atlantis owned property called the Ocean Club). its one of my top overall dining experiences. the food was fantastic, and the ambiance was amazing. if you're lucky, you might hear the waitstaff sing the best "Happy Birthday" rendition I've ever heard from a waitstaff. here's a link: http://www.bahamas.gour.net/Restaurants.restaurants.0.html?&tx_t3consultancies_pi1[showUid]=183&cHash=bbbd992dda
