Doener kebabs like Balli in Berlin, Germany, but in L.A.?
Hi All, looking for the best doener kebabs just like Balli's in Berlin. Or anything that comes close. Doesn't matter where in the Los Angeles area, as long as it comes close. The cuts of meat are thing, crisp on one side, soft and juicy on the other. Any input would be greatly appreciated!!!
New to Morningside Heights - All kinds of cuisines and markets
Hello Hounds!
My work is moving up to the Morningside Heights area around 120th and Riverside Drive. I am not particularly fond of the area, what with all the students and all, but I already live in Washington Heights - which is nothing but Dominican food. I'm looking forward to having a diverse option of restaurants to pick up food, dine in, interesting markets, cool/cheap/interesting bars. The whole lot.
I love all cuisines: Mexican, Salvadoran, Thai, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese (Izakaya and sushi), Italian, Polish, German, anything really. I realize I won't be finding the most authentic food around here so whatever you think is exceptional and stands out for the area. I don't make a whole lot of money, but do splurge every once in a blue moon.
I like to cook and was hoping there were some good markets, especially ones that specialize in ethnic ingredients and produce -Asian, Mexican and so on.
As for bars, one with personality, good happy hours, and a place to unwind if I need to after work where people won't mind that I'm by myself. But, I'm also friendly :)
Cheap Happy Hour Santa Monica - Please include prices!!
Hello folks, I did a preliminary search and found some old posts re: SAMO HH, but would like an updated list of cheap happy hours, prices included as well as times, for beer, well and wine. Martinis a plus!!!
I'm on a very limited budget @15 bucks. I don't ever hang out in Santa Monica but am visiting a friend and would like to hang out and have a good time.
Thanks so much!!!
Chowhound Challenge: 10 Bucks a Day
Thanks you guys! I totally forgot about Ono Hawaiin. Love that one meal turns into two! These are great selections and I can't wait to save some money!
Chowhound Challenge: 10 Bucks a Day
Hello everyone,
Cheap eats in the Hollywood area or adjacent? All cuisines. Lunch or dinner.
Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.

decently priced sushi/ japanese in hollwood or greater los angeles area
hello all,
i just moved back here from NY after being away for four years. trying to uncover a decently priced sushi restaurant. if anyone here is familiar with NY, there is this place in the East Village called Natori. They had a basic selection of fish, tuna, salmon egg, anago, etc and a handful of daily specials, broiled mackeral, green onion and tuna belly handroll,, crispy octopus etc. The place was very tiny and quaint. Everything was fresh and delicious and quite simple. Do we have anything like that here in LA? I know of sushi Gen, but the pricing there can also get out of hand. I'd like a selection of fresh sushi for about 20$, which was what I could get at Natori. Natori was a secret place of mine, it looked like such a hole in the wall, and I suspected that was why it wasn't ridiculously crowded all the time, despite its great value. Please help me find a similar place here!!!!!!!
Good AZ eats by the Phoenix Airport?
I mean really close to the Phoenix Airport. I have a layover of an hour and a half between PHX and LA. Any local deliciousness nearby? I just ask because we have a ton of options within walking distance from the Burbank LA airport so I thought it might be the same here. Thanks!
awesome dinner resto off the 1 train?
Hi fellow hounders!
My friend and I are having dinner tomorrow night and I want it to be convenient for her (she lives off the 1 train), since she always visits me in the East Village. I'm kind of craving paella but any recommendations, all cuisines, not super expensive (15-20 buck entree tops). Okay I'll name a few cuisines: Chinese, Japanese, Spanish, Mexican, oh darn it, okay, EVERYTHING!!! We want to stay in Manhattan, so the 1 train from the West Village to Morningside Heights please.
Thank you in advance! :) :) :)
French pre fix-decently priced, for a birthday?
thanks RGR! I was thinking around the 35 dollar range but the Fleur de Sel Sounds about right. Perhaps they've raised their price?
French pre fix-decently priced, for a birthday?
I know I've read something on here about a great pre fix meal at a French restaurant but cannot remember the name. Any decently priced French bistros for parties of 8? We are celebrating a friend's 30th and want it to be a nice adult celebration with good food and a decent price. Thank you!
Una Pizza Napoletana - disappointing ...
Yes, I agree with the OP. I was excited to try their pie a few months back and was astounded by the prices but didn't let that sway me from what I thought would be an excellent pie. Meh. It was definitely over salted which I know is an odd comment to make on a pizza, but then an Italian fellow chatting with the owner (or cook?) said the same thing out loud when the proprietor asked him how it was. I wouldn't spend that kind of money on their pizza again. It simply just did not taste that good (outside of the salt problem), which is the point that the OP was making, having nothing to do with the "every pizza doesn't come out perfect" theory.
Columbus Circle vegetarian food?
Are there any good, decently priced vegetarian restaurants in the Columbus Circle area?
Getting to know Greenpoint and Williamsburg
Greenpoint has one of two NY entries in Saveur's top one hundred favorite food, food people, and food things in the world, a drink at Reben Luncheonette. Here's a link:

Best all around asian grocery store
I've just started cooking and am in need of a good Asian grocer that sells ingredients and vegetables and meat/fish for all kinds of Asian cuisine. Particularly Pilipino food, as I am trying out my mother's recipes, and Chinese. I know Chinatown is obvious, but where? And as for vegetables, I'm looking for a wide array of greens that I honestly can't even tell you the name of, but they're certainly not to be found on the streets of Chinatown, so if any Pilipinos can tell me where they get their veggies for sinigang and the like, let me know. Also, I am not down for Queens shopping because of time constraints. Manhattan is greatly preferred. Thank you!
Il Passatore - New Williamsburg Italian
Went there last night. So good! Very nice glass of Chianti for $5. Papardelle with veal ragu so delicious. Great tiramisu. Everything made in-house: desserts, pasta, etc. Interesting daily specials, decent prices. I love it, especially in this neighborhood where there is a dearth of nice restaurants.
W 37th and 8th Ave-Good restaurant/wine bar recs?
Seeing a show this Wednesday around there. I'm not aorund that area enough and would love to see what they have to offer. 50 bucks per person two glasses of wine included. Any cuisine.
Excellent cheese plate/selection for birthday gal
My friend loves cheese and for her birthday I want to take her someplace nice with good (resasonably priced) wine and amazing assortment of cheese. I was at Gramercy Tavern the other day so I'm talking on that level. They had an amazing, unique, and lengthy cheese list. This is not dinner. Just two women trying out interesting, exotic, and tasty cheeses. Please don't tell me to go back to Gramercy Tavern because the service was terrible. Bar Veloce and Carrerra are also out. I don't really like their selection and would like to try something new. Anywhere in Manhattan. Sitting at the bar of a nice restaurant is also an option since we are essentially eating dessert, but I would prefer a wine bar that specializes in their cheese selection.
Thanks!
Mole Restaurant on Lower East Side - Who has been?
Yeah there really i s no point making the guac tableside. The place is tiny and I feel bad for the guys making it because they have to bring out this giant set up and make it while others are going back and forth around him. Also don't be fooled by the prices. 9 bucks is a steal for guac but its a smaller portion. You pay the same old ridiculous price of 14$ for a serving of guac the size of what you get at Rosa's Mexicano.
That being said, I have only been to Mole once. The BYOB thing is cool. We brought some tequila for 11 bucks and the guy behind the bar made us great margaritas with it at 4 bucks a pop. They won't charge for beer or wine though.
My friend had the tortilla soup which tasted like canned tomato juice with thickener. I had the chicken enchiladas verde. Not nearly enough chicken and chicken is not that expensive ya know? I'm used to generous portions of Mexican food because I'm from LA. The verde was okay. I've never had good salsa verde in NY. Wouldn't order this dish again.
The have a written menu of specials, Lupe's specials I think. I would try those instead . The refried beans and rice tasted just like home.
Japanese style curry in the East Village
Katsuhama has a really excellent pork tonkatsu curry. Best comfort food, fantastic katsu, and curry! But they are located by Rockefeller Center.
Rockmeisha in the West Village has an excellent curry rice. As well as a lot of other delicious foods--its an izakaya type place.
Looking for the best lobster risotto
I am typically a lone diner so a place with bar seating would be great. And is it truffle season? I'd like some shaved truffles on top! The dish sounds (and looks) like a dream. Also, good times to go and actually get a seat, great wines, service, etc.
LA transplants: Savoy's hainan chicken rice in NY??? Please! [moved from LA board]
I am from Los Angeles, but now currently reside in New York. Obviously, hainan chicken rice is a classic Shanghai/Malaysian dish but I absolutely love the way Savoy does it in Los Angeles' San Gabriel Valley. Its the soft tasty and fluffy rice but the sauces...oh the sauces. A ginger and oil puree. And a creamy chili sauce. And of course some soy sauce. I posted in New York Chowhound but the recommendations I'm getting are nowhere near Savoy's. The chicken is typically good, the rice is a gamble. But they never get the sauces right! Please. If you are familiar with Savoy's hainan chicken rice and the accompanying sauces and know where I can get a version similar to theirs in NY I will be forever greatful. I just had a dream about it the other night...
Hainan chicken rice in New York? Please help!
I actually went to Nyonya awhile ago and tried their chicken rice but the rice was terrible and it only came wih one weird spicy sauce. I desparately need the soft and fluffy and tasty rice experience with magical ginger puree and creamy chili sauce. Do these places have that?
Hainan chicken rice in New York? Please help!
I'm from Los Angeles and my number one comfort food was the Hainan chicken rice from Savoy in Alhambra. I've never seen it before anywhere else. Its basically flavored rice served with boiled chicken and accompanied by three sauces: a creamy chili sauce, soy sauce, and oil/ginger puree. If I was offered only one last meal this would be it so please if anyone knows where I can get this I'll be forever grateful!!!
