RE: Cucina u. Dorotny on Miodowa St. (not sure if Dorotny or Doroty) -from an SF chowhounder
I just had lunch there, since it is just around the corner from the flat we are staying in. The house special potato pancake with tomato based goulash sandwiched in the middle is absolutely delish... we went with 3 other locals & we all had it since it is THE BEST according to them (and they say they have had a lot of bad ones in their lifetime). The portion is huge even by big American Chowhounders standards & we likes to eats. A bargatin at 14 Zlty.
We also started with the tomato soup. Very tasty and you can really taste the homemade rustic touch on this soup. NOT like any other tomato soup I've had. It included these lovely delicate eggy - spatzle like noodles. Our hosts insisted that this a very good soup indeed. A meal in itself probably for some but we had our pancakes coming. This was also a bargain at 4 Zlty.
We also had a ldrink that probably most would not try. It was described as a
compote (or cooked down fruits)into a syrup & then made into a beautiful red drink... not to sweet but seemed like something only the locals knew about. Try it.
I can't wait to go back & try the cutlets & the dessert pancakes... good thing I have the rest of this month to try everything.... YUM!
cured bacon, uncured bacon
When searching this topic - comparing my TJ's uncured bacon to the grocery store traditional cured bacon (but this was called NATUAL SMOKED).- it started me questioning the difference between Sodium nitrate & Sodium nitrite. Hopefully this link is useful to you, I thought it was concise & included the (UN)CURE info as well.
Their biggest claim was the naturally sodium nitrate in something like celery juice that serves as a developer (creates the bi-product) sodium nitrite... hence the similarities to traditional cured bacon (with sodium nitrite added). The link explains it better...

Or course you could take this info with a grain of salt (ha!) since it is biased (a bit) - from the American Meat Institute.
Films featuring COOKS
Thanks for your help... I am looking for movies that I HAVE NOT already seen... so check this list up top. I have already added VATEL & DINNER RUSH based on a recommendation from a chef friend of mine. Thanks!

Babette's Feast
Delicatessen
The Cook the Thief His Wife & Her Lover

Coconut Ice Milk Bars
according to the link from the Magnolia (Ramar Foods) Link... It's a Filipino/Asian foods distributor.
Coconut Ice Milk Bars
Update on Coconut bars at the Luckys (old Albertson's) aka Fulton Mkt. in San Francisco. As of 2/2009 these coconut bars, as described by Oakjoan, are for sale.
In addition there were red bean, mango and a 4th flavor (can't recall). Love coconut!
This is the link to the manufacturer of these frozen bars:
http://www.ramarfoods.com/magnolia/milkbar_coconut.php
(go back one level & you'll see the different flavors... mango, halo halo, red bean etc.)
What's good at King of Thai Noodles?
Lately I have been enjoying both the pad kee mao & pad see ew in vegetarian format. There is a nice balance of veg & tofu with this option. My hubby recently tried a veggie experiment for a month and now prefers these stir fry noodle dishes this way.
The other day we were at the #2 location on clement st. And the spouse had the Tom Yum but added the thin egg noodles. Although this is not traditional to have this soup with noodles. It is quite yummy this way. Good tangy balanced soup and the noodles just make the dish more sumptuous. Also, for a late nite snack I get the veggie guay tiew jae... the cheapest noodle dish, but satisfying with the garlic bits on top.
For an interesting and tasty first course try the fish cakes - Tod Mun. Love the dipping sauce!
Enjoy
Place to grab kimbap (Korean "sushi") in downtown SF?
this may be too late but... At least this suggestion is in SF (not in downtown).
The closest to downtown where I have found just mom & pop grocery stores where they sell made items is on Filmore St. a couple of grocery stores (can't recall any names) but they are near the Filmore music hall.
The 2nd closest idea for finding items from a Korean Grocery (more in keeping w/ the stores you see in S. Calif.) is all on Geary in the Richmond district. I believe there is a store right next door to the (infamous) Korean restaurant called "My Tofu House" which is favorite of my hubby's.
Hope this helps... because I think I connected with what you were looking for.
SA
One Market
I agree. I have had this entree as well. It makes other non-veggie diners jealous. It is very satisfying.
Don't forget that in July all the bottles of wine are 1/2 off. So plan to go back then.
This is their wine event month. Cheers!
Savory Cornbread Pudding
Yes, sorry I thought this one I linked to had the whole stick of butter. But perhaps it was one similar to it. There were vers. 1 & 2 at this site. I agree with the EGG idea. I though one time it was too dense and bread pudding like. And wanted a more souffle-y type. And the egg does the trick.
Definitely don't use margarine. It just makes it oily and not nearly as tasty.
It's nice to know there are other FANS of CORN PUDDING!!!
How to revive crystalized HONEY?
I have done these methods ... thanks. I have even tried (out of boredom) experimenting with adding some of the warm water (that is simmering the honey ) actually IN WITH the honey. Which actually waters it down a bit, but gets the process started.
Has anyone tried ADDING anything to the actual HONEY rather than just the HEATing?
I am curious & will to experiment, since this honey was inexpensive. Thanks.
Savory Cornbread Pudding
Hello,
As a fan of corn pudding, ever since I had my first at a work Thanksgiving potluck (in Indiana - the home of corn). I feel compelled to give you a link to a SUPER easy recipe for this dish. My brother-in-law just keeps these items in the pantry, ready to make this at a moments notice as a side dish or main course. Obviously, not as good as scratch but so easy and flawless for just a short list of ingredients that you just have to mix together & bake. ENJOY!!! Also just use Jiffy Cornbread package mix for the recipe.

How to revive crystalized HONEY?
I guess I never use up my honey before it starts to crystalize. Any suggestions on how to get it softer if not back to it's clear fluid state?
Thanks!
Need a REALLY amazing, young, trendy restaurant to host 22nd birthday for a gorgeous girl!!
The first two places that came to mind was Frisson & Cortez. Frisson because of it interior (dining room is round). Cortez for plates to share perfect for young ladies... great cocktails apparently too.
Pagolac -- underwhelmed
Lately I have been underwhelmed by the basic Pho (w/ say slices of thin beef I believe called "Pho Tai") at the restaurants around the Clement/Geary area of Richmond. I am willing to cross the park to the Inner Sunset in search of a good Pho. I just saw Yummy Yummy recommended on TV. Any suggestions on what I should try (in addition to my Pho)? I agree, I thought some things I had at Pagolac were good but not "knockouts".
Thanks for any advice!
ISO Hungarian Kielbasa in SF
I got a tip from someone who is married to someone Hungarian. He suggested a place located on "36th & Geary" but no name. I did not know there were any businesses on that block that looked like a Sausage shop. Can anyone advise or perhaps know the name of this place on 36th? If not I will investigate and check out the other suggestions as well. Thanks!
ISO Hungarian Kielbasa in SF
I found an old item from an internet search for a restaurant/deli in the Bernal Heights area on Courtland...
* Hungarian Sausage Factory - 419 Courtland Ave. *
but I suspect that this place may have died (info was from 2001) Has anyone been there or know if it is still alive? Thanks for all the above advice as well, I gotta start calling.
7th Annual Dine about Town 2008 - what are you going to try?
One Market is perhaps the only One Star Michelin rated restaurant participating in DAT.
Deal or No Deal (to sound like a game show).
ISO Hungarian Kielbasa in SF
I think the sausage that I am looking for is called "Debreceni" according to my searches for an equivalent. Yes, I thought it was odd that the Hungarian person called it "kielbasa" ... so, this is where I thought that it may be common enough to find in a Polish Deli like New World Market, there is another corner store on Geary (but can't remember the name) which just sells sausage/meat that has "Polish" written in big black lettering. Any info on that place? Name of store or details.
ISO Hungarian Kielbasa in SF
I just had the most delicious Kielbasa (but it was homemade by a Hungarian). It was dry, smoked, and definitely had Paprika... almost like Spanish Chorizo. Are there any delis that CHers know of where I could get Kielbasa like the one I feasted on? Perhaps I could find such a sausage in one of the Polish Delis near Geary? If not somewhere in the Bay Area?
Any advice would be most appreciated.
Veal Stock -- Best Source?
Bryan's in Laurel Village has veal stock in their freezer section. Never tried it but made mental note just in case I needed some and didn't have time to make it from scratch.
Hot Sandwich Hunt
GIORDANO BROS. for the unique hot sandwich experience. http://www.chowhound.com/topics/414079 Check this link out for more details but...
If you haven't had a Pittsburgh style (All in one) sandwich at the original Primanti Bros. (as seen on Food Network) then you should try the closest thing to it in SF. Try the Coppa at Giordano Brothers: 303 Columbus Ave. tel: (415) 397-BROS
It's also a good place for watching sports too.
I love having the coleslaw and fries in the sandwich. It's sounds odd but if you've had one before it's delicious, and fairly unique. A must try if you are a Sandwich aficionado.
ENJOY!
Oxtail soup
About 4 months ago I went to a place in Little Saigon that served Oxtail Stew. It was tomato based and had carrots and potato like my mom used to make. I dunno if it was the French influence (i.e. a more traditional stew) on the Vietnamese food or the fact that I suspect that the owners were ethnically Chinese running a Vietnamese restaurant.
Anyway, the mention of "Chinese/Hawaiian style Oxtail Soup" made me think that CHers may have had this stew.(This is where my mom got her cooking style I suspect)
I loved this stew, I wish I could remember the name/location of this place. The Stew was very tasty and only about $7.95. It was a block up (perpendicular) from Larkin where the 4 block strip is called "Little Saigon". I am guessing it was on Ellis/O'Farrell.
If any CHers have had this please let me know where. Thanks.
Pork Leg Stew Noodle Soup at Thai House Express - Report
Thanks for the tips. I'll bring my notes with me. Can't wait to try some Pork Leg Stew (most likely in the soup noodle format). YUM!
Pork Leg Stew Noodle Soup at Thai House Express - Report
I have read so many posts on this item. I just looked at the on-line menu, which had the Pork Leg Stew listed as a special, but (just to be clear) what everyone is going ga-ga over is this Stew on a noodle soup?
Just want to make sure I am ordering the same thing that everyone is raving about. Then I will make sure to eat this by next week, since I don't think I can hold out any longer!
Thanks!
recent fleur de lys experiences?
Chapeau! is going to take over the location of Clementine on Clement street in addition to it's original location? Or are they moving? I was not aware.
Best prix fixe menu in SF
Prix Fix in the FiDi area (only on Fri and Sat nights)... One Market Restaurant. Approx. $36.95 for 3 courses. For a white tablecloth dinner. Try a place that got a recent One Michelin Star.
SF: Pot de Pho open - Anyone tried the organic free-range chicken, Kobe beef bone or vegan pho with house-made rice noodles?
Sylphi - where do you go for Authentic Pho in that similar neighborhood - Richmond (or even Sunset). See my posting from Dec 22nd. In search of the Best Pho.
Thanks, Boomer13
revisit BEST Pho in SF...where?
Hello,
I just did a search on the Best Pho in SF. (I am not really concerned about the North vs. South style) Have been to PPQ and Turtle Tower (and even Tu' Lan). But any other suggestions besides the ones listed in Little Saigon from the Chronicle link?
Perhaps is there some places that I have not discovered in either the Sunset or Richmond district of the city? Or will I need to go to San Jose to find the real authentic ph'o? I must admit, I used to goto Little Siagon in Orange County so I was spoilt for choice.
Please help, it's so cold out, and I really want to find the ULTIMATE pho place. Plus the spouse has a hankering for Ph'o Bo- (Tai - thin rare slices of beef).
Thanks for the help!
Mother-in-Law Dinner SF Recs
For some reason when you said "screams S.F." - I thought of Tadich Grill, on California St. Try the cioppino (the classic dish to try there) with plenty of sourdough bread. Not fancy food, but it's kinda like Sears Fine Food... old SF tradition. I took a friend visiting from S. Calif. (Riverside) and he loved it, cuz it was a cozy seafood stew in a unique setting. We even saw the S.F. Twins that evening to make it a classic SF nite.
Seach on Tadich Grill if you want to see other postings; get more details.
I suppose you should check out Sears Fine Food if you like SF traditional. Although I have personally never eaten there, everyone goes there for the Swedish pancakes.
