family dinner in west village? help!

my brother lives on 14th and sixth--do you have any recs for a place nearby for 6 people?

I'm feeling a little desperate because I'm supposed to meet them tonight and all my usuals don't seem as accomodating for the larger party.

we're going to be meeting the girlfriend, so casual to keep the pressure off.

Cooks Illustrated Peanut Butter Cookies

I have not made them but judging by how good the Cooks Illustrated Brown Sugar Cookies are, I now want to try them!

W. Village with Kids - Help please!

BLT Burger is a good lunch spot. They have milkshakes and burgers and fries.

Joe Junior's is a diner, perfect for any meal..

Best Burger

Piper's Kilt burgers are not special! It's not you.

Worst restaurants in Westchester

Backal's in Scarsdale has a cursed location, I swear.

Pepe's Pizzeria in Fairfield

I have been to the Fairfield branch several times myself. I suppose it's ridiculous to ask for a little decor though?

Pepe's Pizzeria in Fairfield

Pepe's is definately the best pizza in Connecticut if not the Northeast if not America if not the world.

What to serve with Mac 'n Cheese?

I'm planning on making Alton Brown's Baked Macaroni and Cheese for a family dinner tonight, but I'm a little worried about whether it's something substantial enough for everyone and I don't know if it suits my dad's palate. I think I'd be better off keeping the meal all dairy--any suggestions as to what else to make?

BEST CUPCAKES I'VE HAD... and I've tried them ALL

Oh please. I am not someone who wants to spend five bucks on a plain cupcake with buttercream frosting. If I'm going for a cupcake, then I'm obviously breaking my usual diet routine and I'm gonna go for something with a lot of calories. I'm gonna get something delicous and innovative, too. I'm going to go to CRUMBS BAKESHOP.

Juniors Cheesecake as good as they say?

Juniors Cheesecake is delicous but if you're not going to be at the station anyway, I wouldn't say it's worth the trip to the train station.

Best Burger

Candlelight Inn
519 Central Park Ave
Scarsdale, NY 10583-1018
(914) 472-9706

Although you will have to order your fries on the side and decide whether you want their regular crinkly ones, waffle fries, onion rings...do you think you can handle that? ;)

If you're a real burger lover then, A Hamburger Today is worth a read.

Large table in Westchester or near by Conn. [moved from Manhattan board]

I would recommend La Panetiere in Rye. They are very accomodating to large parties, the service is as immpecable as the food but they also are understanding when you want to celebrate and be left alone a little. Especially if price is not the issue, then I think you should go for what will be your best meal. Blue Hill isn't much of a family birthday place in my opinion either. Everyone will find something they like at La Panetiere and they have delicous amuse-bouche's and desserts, too...now I want to go back!! We did my parent's wedding anniversary party there in December.

Kykuit is a historic site in Sleepy Hollow. It used to be a Rockefeller mansion.

What's better than Per Se?

From the fact that you want to "top it," I'm guessing you're both adventurous eaters? Why not try WD-50?

Brgr

Is it worth a visit? My brother and I are devotees of BLT Burger but I was wondering if we should branch out. The fact that Frank Bruni liked this better than BLT Burger makes me unsure rather than excited though.

Mint Premium Foods in Tarrytown

A Moroccan guy named Hassan operates this small but overfilled shop on Main Street where he stocks lots of exotic cheese, beer, amazing dark chocolate and lots of cool sundries. His Valhrona hot chocolate with the olive oil flatbread is my absolute favorite snack and the prepared foods, especially his rotisserie chicken, curry chicken, and wheatberries are not to be missed. I also sampled some sort of salad with octopus last time that was delicous. Shopping there is a really fun experience especially given all the samples they'll feed you.

It is probably my favorite place in Westchester right now, and I recommend it to anyone on Chowhound. He's opening a restaurant by Kykuit at the end of the summer.

breakfast (NOT BRUNCH), UWS

I second this recommendation. I think Sarabeth's would be just what the OP is looking for. Especially if going on the early side for a light meal, you'll have a classy experience and not as noisy or as uncomfortable as going to one of the bakeries or diners.

72nd and Amsterdam- Just Moved In

Nikko's Greek food is horrible in terms of its authenticity.

Big Nick's Pizza Joint Too on 72nd and Columbus is much better than the other one. They'll deliver to you and they are open very late.

Nice Matin is a nice brunch.

Josie's on 74th and Amsterdam has a healthy, lighter menu with vegetarian options. It's a great lunch place. My faves: lemonade, chicken burrito, dumplings, focaccia. Their sister restaurant is Citrus which has a latin inspired menu.

Crumbs Bakeshop is I think at 75th and has amazing cupcakes. Best in the city, imho!

Warning: I have gotten raw cookies at Levain's. Big disappointment because they are delicous when cooked through!

Kefi at 79th and Amsterdam is a great greek restaurant. More upscale/pricey than Nikko's but certainly worth it. And right by the big Duane Reade!

making chicken stock??

I have a leftover roast chicken from Saturday. It was a huge chicken and 85% of the chicken is still on the bones. I have never made chicken stock from leftover chicken like this. Should I cut all the meat off the bones? Should I leave any on? How much? I'm more than slightly perplexed here.

Little Pie Company Hell's Kitchen

I've had their apple pie and it was a disappointment. They serve their pies, cupcakes and cookies at BLT Burger though and the cupcakes look adorable although I have not tried them.

Backals yet, anybody?

They have definately not ironed out the kinks. They can't even make a good steak.

Ann Arbor -- best dishes at the best restaurants

Also at Zingerman's Roadhouse, they are more than happy to substitute the less than mediocre fries that come with the burger. You are doing yourself a huge favor if you get the sweet potato fries instead. They are delicous, and served with homemade spicy mayo.

Ann Arbor -- best dishes at the best restaurants

A very nice Italian restuarant with a romantic atmosphere and an authentically Italian chef serves the best chicken parm in America at Paesano's.

I much prefer the steak sandwich at Zingerman's Roadhouse to their hamburger. I'd also recommend the fried chicken or the monterey jack mac n cheese with grilled chicken.

I'm from New York City but I visit Ann Arbor several times a year and those are the four dishes I always eat before coming home!!
