Sunday Brunch--Maui
We are staying in Kaanipali, and decided at the last minute to change our plans and stay in for Sunday. We have reservations for the buffet brunch at the Tiki Terrance at the Kaanipali Beach Hotel. There was something advertised about it winning "Best Brunch" in the local paper, but I have no info on the other hotels. Anyone been? Any alternative suggestions? We are interested in a buffet because one of us truly dislikes most traditional breakfast foods.
This is last minute, but any help would be appreciated.
Where are some of your favorite places to have lunch in SD?
Love Super Cocina--near my workplace in the hood.
When I'm on vacation, I love Chocolat in Hillcrest and Fairouz Cafe in Midway area.
Playa Grill in Costco Mission Valley has great early happy hour Merry Pigglest sliders and margarita lunch
Dinner Hillcrest Area
If you want to walk from the movie to your food.. What about Chocolat? I love their zucchini crepe and panninis. Crest Cafe is also reliable--just a couple of blocks away on Robinson. Pink Noodle for Thai and Burger Lounge are also right there. If you go a few blocks down 5th, 5th Avenue has also pleased us with their interesting menu.
Joao's Tin Fish - Liberty Station SD
I hope people give this place another chance. We've been twice now. Service was fine. I saw no evidence of the gory fishing videos and the Portuguese style fish was delish! We got yellowtail with a wonderful sauteed onion/peppers/garlic topping. I was not overwhelmed by the fish and chips, but am anxious to go back and try the ethnic recipes.
Pink Noodle Thai in Hillcrest
We ventured in tonight with a 2 for 1 coupon. I was a little put off by the decor which looked like they'd done it themselves on a shoestring. Don't judge a book by it's cover! It was delicious!!
Had the best Tom Kha soup ever. Great spicy stir fried udon noodles called the "Knock Out". The Housemade Cooler was also yummy. Give it a try while the Community Coupon is valid.
We'll be back to try the specials which were not eligible for the coupon.
Shopping for good food and supplies on Maui - Advice for visiting condo cooks?
This thread looks perfect for us! Any updates for a visit scheduled for mid-April and stationed on Kaanipali?
Big Pleasant surprise at Liberty Station--Joao's
Months ago I bought a cheap coupon for Joao's in Liberty Station. We had checked out the location and noticed a Portuguese trend to the menu, but decided against it that day because it was dead! Yet I was curious enough to gamble a few dollars. Tonight we finally tried it out--I wish I hadn't waited.
We had the fresh fish Portuguese style--$22.95 for beautiful, fresh sea bass. It came with a side salad with a delicious house-made balsamic dressing, and buttery mashed potatoes. We loved the Portuguese sauce of onions, cilantro, peppers and olive oil. I also tried the fried seafood combo--$16.95. The accompanying cole slaw was clearly house-made, unusual and tasty. Both the tartar and cocktail sauces were excellent and the fish, shrimp, scallops and calamari each came out cooked properly. I wish we'd been hungry enough to try the Portuguese fried donuts and house-made banana ice cream.
I noticed they were in the Community Magazine coupons good thru the end of February--we may make it back before it expires.
Who's familiar with 'old' San Diego restaurants?
Still going strong since the 20's, but parking has become difficult. We've been enjoying their basic Cantonese plates for almost 20 years, shortly after moving to North Park. It is a family run operation. We love their tomato beef chow mein and walnut shrimp. It's that's comfortable old shoe of a place you can count on for take-out Chinese. Call them and they'll take it out to you curbside on a busy parking night.
Palm Springs and vicinity suggestions
Spending 2 nights in Palm Springs right after New Years. We tentatively thought we might hit a casino buffet at dinner and a nice, upscale lunch in PS or any of the surrounding desert cities, such as Rancho Mirage etc.
Which casino buffet would you suggest?--we like Valley View and Barona in San Diego.
Which , if any, of the upscale restaurants have a mid-week lunch worth going to?
Considering Cheeky's for breakfast, Murph's for fried chicken and Johannes for Wiener Schnitzel. Advice?
Lunch--fine dining experience, good value (Friday)
It has been my experience that you can often experience a really upscale restaurant, much more reasonably at lunch. I'm lunching with an old friend who is not too adventurous, so the menu needs to have some tasty, but not too spicy, salad type options. I'm a hound, so I'd love some either classic old school favorites or something more original. We are meeting at Union Station, but have the whole day together, so we are not confined to downtown.
San Diego CLOSED Restaurants - Replacement for old board.
OMG, I loved that place, too!
Hey guys need best Fish & Chips in San Diego?
I have to put in a vote for Anthony's Fishette--love the chips and tartar sauce. Also, we used to love the fish and chips at Ritual Tavern in North Park--however we haven't indulged in some time.

Best croissants in San Diego?
Gotta agree with you about the bake at home choc ones from Trader Joe's freezer section. There's nothing like warm from the oven!
Best Chilaquiles (with corn tortillas) in SD?
I love Super Cocina, too. I friend of mine LOVES chilaquiles and swears by them at Casa Adams (30th & Adams). I haven't tried them there yet, because I have a hard time getting past their shrimp enchiladas with a creamy chipotle sauce.

Tre Porcellini - Fantastic Addition to Hillcrest!
Finally made it to Porcellini for Friday night dinner. With the abundance of Italian restaurants, I usually don't get too excited about a new one, but I was curious and wanted to use a coupon. (They are in the current Community Coupon booklet.) We read your review, were guided by your comments and were VERY happy. The complimentary tomato dipping sauce for the bread was fantastic! The pear, arugula and blue cheese salad was great, as were the veal stuffed ravioli. I loved the cream and mushroom sauce, but it was very rich. We were glad we had agreed to share our dishes. The salmon balanced things out nicely. We also had the mixed fried calamari.
We will definitely be back--thanks for your review.
Best Take-Away?
Have you checked out Bristol Farms near Costa Verde mall? They've got lots of ready to heat and serve, upscale goodies.
lunch in SD or Coronado?
Try the Hillcrest Farmers Market on Sunday from 9-1pm(?) or the Wednesday market at Ocean Beach. Both have good take away stands. Although it is a chain, the Il Fornaio in Coronado has a great view and we've always enjoyed our meals. Happy hour at Bali Hai for a Mai Tai before sunset and some appetizers would be fun. Best bay view IMO and the new chef has really improved the food experience. We liked the poke better than Roy's. Great grocery/market in -- Golden Triangle--Bristol Farms and Whole Foods in Hillcrest. Enjoy your stay!

A Week In Provence
Thanks so much for the suggestions. I'll report back when I get back home!
A Week In Provence
We also will be spending a week in St. Remy. All details and suggestions appreciated. Our dates are mid April.
Looking for dinner near--Studio City this Friday
After a day at Universal Studios, we were hoping to have a really good dinner. What's the best place nearby? We love most cuisines, but I love to try something a little unusual. Looking at Mantee, but not sure. Any suggestions closer than Hollywood? Prices are flexible if the food is really memorable.

San Diego Restaurant Week
Just came home from Avenue 5. We were extremely happy. Everything we ordered was excellent, but 2 items were memorable--artichoke soup and jasmine pot de creme. I've had artichoke soup before, but this version was so intensely flavored with artichoke I could have made a meal out of it! (Wish it was on their regular menu! ) The jasmine pot de creme was more of a creme brulee, but delicious, and the accompanying homemade donuts were warm and wonderful. If there regular menu items are this yummy, I am surprised I haven't heard more about it!

Recommendations for a Local
The best F& C I've had is at Ritual Tavern in North Park. I haven't indulged recently, but you might want to check it out.

Great Breakfasts and Quick Lunches AT the Riverwalk in SA
When I was visiting a couple of summers ago, I enjoyed the german deli near the Riverwalk/Alamo area. Sorry I don't recall the name, but it was old time wooden booths and homemade root beer.
Road trip from San Diego to Sedona by way of Blythe & Pheonix. Any recs?
We will be driving from San Diego, up I-15 to I-10 on the way to Sedona for 3 nights the weekend before Thanksgiving. It's been years since I've been to Sedona. I remember it was a very long day's drive. Any suggestions to break up the trip? Once in Sedona, it looks like Elote is a main attraction. Any other "don't misses"?
Cosmopolitan - Old Town
We tried Cosmopolitan on Thursday. Unfortunately they had a big event going on in the patio--service was very poor. No water refill, long delays between courses and extremely hard, uncomfortable seating made for an unpleasant evening. The food was mostly good, once it arrived. Loved the clams and mussels dish and the lemon curd and blue berry shortcake dessert. My partner loved the pork cheeks, but I thought the lavender honey glaze was too much. Sadly, we probably won't be back anytime soon, unless it's for happy hour in the garden.
Wine Vault Bistro 02/06/10
How did I miss this place! We investigated it for Restaurant Week, but ended up opting for their Saturday night 5 course meal for $30. Some of the best, creative food I've had in a long time. Celery root soup, chicken breast with a chicken leg mouseline was the best chick I've eveer had in San Diego! We joined the newsletter and can't wait for the next menu listing!
Old Fashion Cake
I would second the Twiggs suggestion. The cakes do taste homemade in the best way.
Kidneys--Anyone know where to buy them fresh or frozen?
We've been looking to cook some, but have had no luck so far.
Best Food Finds at Costco Part 2 6/10
Got to agree as to the roasted chicken. Too tired or hot to cook? We pick up one of these juicy birds and throw a salad together or simply make tacos. Yum!
