Max Brenner's Chocolate Shop

well, while it's certainly not highbrow, and touristy indeed, and i have brought out of town friends there, i happen to think it's a fun and good for a variety of chocolately fun deserts with a group.... i think it's great for that and not too expensive. i was very hesitant but have had a good time whenver i've gone.

dip is fun for parties/ chocolate fondue desert too... also not amazing food, but still a good time, plus a decent bar scene.... maybe chocolate bar- but that's tiny... and room 4 desert is closed.

Cub Room Bad service Wrong Food

well, i must say that i did end up giving in and giving it a shot, and for a weekday lunch it was actually quite pleasant... a house salad or soup, and sandwich, burger & salad options, for approx. $8. we really enjoyed our large grilled chick. sandwiches & burgers, and for that price, in soho, you can't complain at all.

service was good too, except for one irritant- there was a family w/a crying, screaming baby, that continued to cry throughout the hour or so we were there. not once did the couple take the kid outside, and it was pretty obvious the whole restaurant was annoyed by it. i know it's a delicate situation, but perhaps a waiter or manager could have tried to offer some help, offer something for the kid to put in it's mouth, etc as it seemed to be crying out of hunger, so mumbled his parents... i don't know the "correct" thing to do in that situ., but the place was packed and everyone was unhappy with it...

Best Rugelach in NYC/ Tri State Area...Oy! I give up!

i second zabar's! my family loves the chocolate & cinammon. only problem is i tend to start eating it while in the store and then have to go get more ;)

7 layer cake

i love the seven layer at Mother's Bakery in riverdale, 235th & johnson ave.. don't know where else i'd find it!

particular type of fried pickle - where to find?

check out soho park! i didn;t expect to like them, but they're really delish there, and they have about 6 kinds of aoili/dipping sauces, and good fried zucchini too!

Lloyd's carrot cake, Riverdale

it's delicious, and i'm not much of a carrot cake/ cream cheese frosting fan!

inexpensive raw bar?

happy hour at lure fish bar has great deals too!

Where can I get Crabcakes in New York City?

i recenlty had a fabulous crab cake at Roy's. I know there's an appetizer, but not sure if there's more than that... check it out.

A Restaurant for a book club to meet at...

at nolita house, there's a large back booth that might suit you...

Cheap & good weeknight eats for one?

nolita house has daily specials- mussels & fries, mac & cheese tasting, etc., plus every a day glass of wine & 2 cheeses (also served w/ small salad) is $14 during happy hour ( 4-8 i think). drinks are all 2 for 1 during those times too, so you can have a satisfying meal & drinks...

LES brunch

Essex is pretty good, haven't been in a while though.

Cub Room Bad service Wrong Food

wow, so it's really that bad? my co-workers want to go there for lunch today b/c there's some cheap lunch special deal going on, but after reading any recent reviews, i'm hesitant...

anyone have other suggestions in the area, soho-ish/between mercer & 6th ave. etc? relatively inexpensive lunch, not too heavy, maybe somewhere with open windows & a potential breeze since it's so stuffy today?

Hidden Gems in the Bronx

aha, thanks striver!

yeah, that's true, but i don't care too much about the bread, and it's not like it's awful.

well, there was a newspaper write up and that week was nuts there, but i usually go once a week, and i still have seen it very quiet at times, even on the weekends. i think it's pretty unpredictable that way. last weekend i was told the wait would be 45 minutes, but it was 20 at the most... it can get busy, and there are sometimes (the same) rude people who sit there nursing coffee for half an hour, but a lot of people still don't seem to know about the place...which is actually fine with me.

Hidden Gems in the Bronx

there's a great italian near fordham called enzo's. they own a place on arthur ave too, but i'm not sure which.

the best neighborhood place in riverdale is beccofino. it is THE hidden gem of the area. consistently delicious, homey, good sized portions, great staff, great specials every day.

Red Sox/Yankees: Here we go again!!!

professor thom's is your place... def. pretty good bar food,
somehow even i love the place, and i'm a huge yankee fan... probably has something to do with the free shots during drunken bingo there, which, fyi, is also a great time!

yeah, riviera is the only other one i know of...

Thanksgiving in NYC

ok, you'll probably all laugh at this, but quality for your money, the best unknown turkey-day baragain in NY is...Virgil's, yes the bbq place. We ended up trying it out last year after seeing how good the menu looked, and it was tons of food, really good, tasty dishes, lots of side dishes/veggies included, i thnk even 2 kinds of potatoes, and desert/coffee/tea i think. and it was only around $25/person. it's great for families large & small...plus we all had so much left over we got a 2nd meal out of it.

my family did capsutoa few years ago and while food was pretty good, portions were tiny and it wasn't THAT amazing for the prices...

NYC's All City Best Buffalo wings (2007)

i concur with a lot of you- my fave are still blondies (though i'm partial to the west side one) and the atomic wings at down the hatch (yes, if you can deal with the "element" which happens to be ok during random weeknight happy hours or late nite! i've had both recently.

i was underwhelmed last time i had scruffy duffy's but they are usually ok... 1849 is also pretty good, especially on 20c nite! and rathbones is great!

i haven't been to croxley's or barrow in ages- will have to try their's again soon.

here's one to avoid: molly pitcher's on the UES

Good Seafood restaurant

thanks- it was great!

lure's in the former canteen space, thus no canteen, no mac & cheese. i don't think any of their current restaurants serve it... but the touch of bacon on the chowder at lure reminded me a little of the bacon you could get on the mac & cheese at canteen...

Good Seafood restaurant

just saw this again now, but i did end up at Lure, and it was fabulous- my new fave seafood place... i've essentially been working down the block from it for years, or whenever it opened, and just thought it would be too expensive, but it's deifnitely on par with most other seafood places...i will definitely be back, often!

the service was impeccable, from the hosts, managers checking in, amazing waitress to the busboys- all perfect and clearly paying attention to detail. that really made a huge impact.
food was delicious- apps were raw bar, with 4 oysters and 2 shrimp cockatil, tempura shrimp, and clam chowder w/bacon (SO good). we also tried the softshell crab special. i dont usually eat that, but tasted and liked it.

entrees were a tuna, apparently cooked rare and perfectly ( i don't eat that either) and mahi mahi with bok choy, perfectly done and i don't remember the 3rd...

we enjoyed the deserts as well, though all we had had an ice cream component. there was a panna cotta choice too, but had had it the night before at another restaurant so skipped that one. we got ice cream sandwiches, a cinammon affogato, and a really moist, great chocolate cake w/ pistacio ice cream.

overall, wonderful experience and i'm kicking myself for not just trying it sooner, but i guess i was still mourning the loss of canteen's mac & cheese!

had a few great strong gin drinks as well.

Best milkshakes in NYC?

I liked BLT Burger's coffee shake, but couldn't tell you if it was made that way. i suspect it had coffee syrup... and it was really good!

Under $25 entrees, Union Square?

there's a havana central... good mojitos & great sangria!

Nolita House

i go pretty regulalry, order lunch, do happy hour, even threw a company holiday party there...so yeah, i'm fan and anyone i've ever take there has loved it ;)

some highlights: my favorite spinach dip ever, with homemade rosemary flatbread, great cheese platters that come with a little salad/fruit, wine & cheese specials, 2 for 1 happy hours, great specialty drinks at times...

large and delicious sandwiches, which they'll also do as wraps, very accomodating...good, large salads, burgers, very rich mac & cheese... they do a mussels & fries special once a week.. always good, helpful service and reasonable prices, though have found them to be a bit slow once in a while, but like i said, i go a lot...

i heard the brunch (w/live music) is great, but i still have not made it... oh, and great onion rings too!

i know they've won the citysearch best comfort food a few years, and that is what you get. plus artisanal cheeses and good wine & beer selection for a little place.

and if you get lunch delivered, they usually send a little chocolate brownie/cake desert bite, which is always a treat!

a quiet place with good wine in the east village

Aroma ( on 4th be.t bowery & lafayette) is usually pretty quiet early... they also have a good deal 4-7 with a flight of wines and all the antipasto you want, whatever they put out (ususally 6 dishes or so)

wine bar on 2nd ave. near 2nd st i think has been fairly quiet inside when i've been there around 7

Dinner on Lafayette Street?

Nolita House maybe
I enjoy Noho Star

Serafina is up lafayette a bit...

Is "Trendy" And Delicious Possible?

my #1 in this category would be buddakan.

spice market used to be but as i wrote in a recent post in another place, haven't eaten there in a while and the founding head chef isn't there anymore....

'inoteca is one of my favorite places, and always great!

mercer kitchen is a good choice too. lure fishbar perhaps?

i dislike butter. trendy, but when i've eaten there, bad food & bad service...
is mermaid inn considered trendy now? it's delicious...

Review: Spice Market

i loved spice market, even ate there the week it opened and had a wonderful experience, but have not eaten there recently. the original head chef is no longer there, so i'm guessing any decline in food and menu changes have been a result of that... i've wanted to go back and try it, but wasn't sure... i love teh decor and have always have had great service, even just down in the lounge, however, yes, at times have found hosts, etc. to be a bit snooty...

Near Pegu Club

Lupa, Balthazar, I hear good things about Savoy & have never been, mayb Zoe? I'm undecided how I feel about the place but I think it can be a bit pricey for what it is...

For low key, inexpensive but filling & delicious pasta (& pizza & salads,) I love Il Corallo Trattoria. Also a fan of the more casual, comfort food oriented Nolita House. They have some good wine & artisinal cheese deals in addition to the menu.

short notice for NoLita lunch recs

I love Nolita House, (houston bet. mott & mulberry)
salads, large sandwiches, burgers, great mac & cheese, & especially love their onion rings

Brother Jimmy's near Penn Station?

it's the same old bro jimmy's like all the rest. food's fine, nothing amazing. i was there last week, had pulled chicken sandwich which was large and satisfying although a bit over sauced. it's good to have another option in that hood, for pre-gaming before MSG events, etc.

also, there's a whole upsatairs dining room there, which is all open w/windows on 2 sides, so it's nice and bright during the day

Good Seafood restaurant

I love Mermaid Inn too & went last week even though no RW participation, plus you get free desert there anyway ;)

Going to Lure this week myself

I also like Roy's. it's sort of Hawaiian-fusion seafood, and people tend to not know about the place. Their RW menu last week included macadamia crusted mahi mahi with lobster sauce (bisque-like) and chive & bacon mashed potatoes, a butterfish option, and an awesome, although small filet mignon. Appetizers included a chinese chicken salad and a dim sum sampler.

Ocean Grill, or maybe Blue Water Grill is participating but I haven't eaten there.
