Arthur Ave on Christmas Eve Day

bob96, I remember Christmas Eve shopping on Arthur Ave for many, many years. Italians always waited till the last minute because it would be "fresh". I always wanted to know if they thought that the fish was caught that morning!!! Even today, with refrigeration and freezers, they still wait for the last minute. Buon Natale!!!!!

Who would you recommend for a catered (take-out) Thanksgiving Dinner for about 15 people. Lower Westchester County (South of 287). Preferably some place that you've tried and what foods did you have?

Best Value Grocery Shopping in Westchester?

I've noticed that their advertisements and circulars in the local newspapers have stopped. The store is not centrally located to accommodate the Westchester customers. It's not worth the trip for me.

Best Value Grocery Shopping in Westchester?

That's exactly how I look at Stop and Stop. I don't know how they exist. This Sunday I purchased 2 packages of Oreo cookies (2/$5.00). The person in front of me spent $205.00 and her cart was not full!!!!

Best Value Grocery Shopping in Westchester?

Saving money on groceries means that you must shop a number of supermarkets. Being retired, I have the time. You must look through all the print circulars or online circulars. If I were to chose one store, it would be Shop Rite. Prices are fair, sale items are always in stock, the widest choice of products, good produce and decent meat.
Costco.................Know your unit prices.....some are hard to calculate
Stew Leonard.....The freshest and best price on milk.....Choose your meat carefully, they don't know how to cut meat & they you pay for a lot of fat....Buy only sale items
Trader Joe's........Good for specialty items
Morton Williams..Good for specialty items.....prices higher than big supermarkets
Stop and Shop....No bargains.....very few good sale items
A & P -- Pathmark...Nothing special.....sale items only
Shop Rite.............My favorite (see above)
Apple Farm..........Largest choice of produce.....watch the quality.....good fresh mozzarella
De Cicco...............Sale items.....great beer selection.....good meat cut to order.....overall good quality at fair prices

For really good prices and top quality, Arthur Ave., Bronx is the place to get bread, prime meats, fish, fresh pasta, deli products, pastry and much more. "It's worth the trip".

dinner with son on arthur avenue

There is not better penne with vodka sauce on Arthur Ave . than Mario's.

Great Meal at the new Benjamin's Steakhouse

Everyone mentioned that they had "steak". What cut of beef was it? Was it cooked as ordered?

More Pizza Coming To White Plains

I don't know where you got your facts from but this from the website: http://anthonyscoalfiredpizza.com/anthony
The place didn't even open and you already gave a negative review!!! What do you consider excellent pizza in Westchester?

More Pizza Coming To White Plains

A new pizzeria is coming to White Plains, Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza. All I can say from those who have been to the one in Wilmington, DE and Palm Beach, FL is that's it's great. Now we'll have to wait and see and I'm sure we'll hear from all the pizza connoisseurs. http://anthonyscoalfiredpizza.com/maps2

Frankie & Fanucci’s-Hartsdale (ex-Lias's location)

From the Westchester County Business Journal:

For Nagy, who’ll be opening another Frankie & Fanucci’s with his partner in Mamaroneck in October, it’s all about knowing the clientele and the times. The thin-crust pizzeria started as a higher-end place but segued to a popularly priced casual family eatery when the economy went south. The strategy is working. On a Friday night, the place is packed.

Where to find fruits and veggies on Arthur Ave in the Bronx

Bob is referring to Modern and I agree with his comments.

San Marzano whole peeled tomatoes?

What you are getting at Costco are "Italian peeled tomatoes from the San Marzano region". Read the label. Real San Marzano tomatoes will say "San Marzano plum peeled tomatoes and are certified as bob96 has indicated below. The Nina is a very good tomato and a great buy.

Arthur Ave restaurants that take reservations?

This one of the newer restaurants in the area and I know you will enjoy the food. Check out some reviews: http://www.yelp.com/biz/antonios-trattoria-bronx

italian hero / coldcuts

Coll, you got it right, the bread makes the difference. I've eaten hero's since I was a kid growing up in the Arthur Ave. area in the Bronx. Whether you buy a hero at a deli or make your own at home, you must start out with good bread. Any bakery on Arthur Ave. makes bread that can't be beat. My favorite is Addeo Bakery. The name, Boars Head, doesn't mean the best since they make more than one line of cold cuts.

Capuzzella recipe

I just did a Google search for "lambs head recipe" and came up with a number of them, all pretty similar. The only part I disagree with is to remove the eyes and the tongue, cook the tongue separately and then return it to it's mouth. Cook the entire head.
