Hachiya Persimmon Lovers Rejoice

Persimmons typically start to ripen around early November, losing all the green around calyx by mid to late November. The ones on the tree right now are softening and almost of no commercial value. We have lots of extra ripened hachiyas that you may have. contact us at simplelifecl at hotmail dot com

Old-school sourdough bread?

What's your favorite old-fashioned San Francisco sourdough in SF or northern Peninsula? We'd like to get some to go with our crab fest coming up.

Newish Pizza place near 30th St. and San Jose Av in SF?

Our last visit two weeks ago, the lasagna was overcooked and calamari fritter was too chewy. Seafood risotto was lacking flavors. A new chef/cook, perhaps? amatriciana was good, though.

Question: For a $50+ meal for two, did you use 2x$25 gc's? Still trying to figure out how gc from restaurant.com would work.

BTW, their Sliced Fish with Preserved Vegetable in Warm Pot is excellent...we dream about it! :) (Too bad that they don't open for lunch today, but I will be there tomorrow!)

New: Great authentic Beijing cuisine in San Francisco

"fish with preserved vegetate in warm pot" is quite good. Complex flavors with balance of the somewhat sour preserved napa cabbage (home made) and sweetness of fish, not to mention the added texture of wide cellophane noodles. A keeper.

Also, very fond of "stired flour ball with pok." I especially like the texture of flour balls...very chewy...almost couldn't tell it's a flour product A better version thn Old Madirin Islamic.

What a transformation from Nulite Kitchen :-)

Lobster noodles, oyster pancake and wo choy @ Toon Kee, SF

guess I am not not familiar with Teochew cuisine. need to learn to like that chewy blobs...

As far as that translation assignment, it's best left to the many experts on this board. I only know the menus are different by the number of lines and appearance of the characters on wochoy menus. G!

Lobster noodles, oyster pancake and wo choy @ Toon Kee, SF

Yeah, too much cornstarch on that oyster omelet as well. We tried the black pepper pork chops ($4.95?) tasty, but kinda saucy. I prefer a dryer rendition. I noticed that they have $12.88/$22.88 wo choy menus on our table and they are different from the $12/$22 wo choy menus on other tables. We'd go back to try wo choy next time. I guess, depending on which table we sit, we'll get a different menus.

Persimmon drinks, dishes, desserts?

I had a over ripen large back-of-the-counter-forgotten fuyu a fortnight ago. Tasted just like a Hachiya to me.

Where to find tons of Haychia Persimmons?

My SO is crazy about these astringent persimmons! Okay, she doesn't need tons, but 75+lb would be nice. We used to be able to get them from a tree in the south bay that the owners were only too happy to have someone remove the fruits for them. But this year they had to cut down the tree. We're not willing to pay $1+ each at Safeway. A friend in the business says that these fruit have very little commercial value...once they are ripe, they have to be tossed.... In an ethylene rich environment, they ripe fast, hence the sky rocketing price, HELP!!

Sour dough bread

Danilo on Green and Italian French Baking Company on Grant are probably the last two old-style mom-and-pop North Beach bakeries that do sourdough. Their sourdough starters are passed down, with daily careful feeding, for generation!

Looking for best fresh food buys in Mission

At MOM last week. Broccoli @ $0.49/lb. Turned greenish yellow in 2 days.

Has anyone tried the SF Produce terminal on Jerrold? True one often has to buy bulk, but some markets do retail, sort of. Universe often sells stuff by the pound. When in season, a case of broccoli ~$8. Lasts 2 weeks.

Most shops at the terminal close before noon, if not earlier.
