Restaurant Closings in 2012

Not surprised. Everytime you went in they were out of something! Wonder if they are going to open again under another name?

Italian BYOW

What is the best Italien bring your own wine in Montreal?

50th birthday party (Italian style)

Hi all. I'm looking for an Italian restaurant for a group of about 20, moderatly priced and very tasty. It's 20 old school italians, meaning they all cook very well at home.
Any suggestions? We tried isensi and were not crazy about it. I need some help.
Thanks in advance.

Table of Hope.

Well done. I knew I would get answers if I came here, I just didn't think I would get all the answers. Thank you.
Wonder if Moishes will make it this year?

Table of Hope.

Does anyone know which restaurants will be there tonight? I hope they're different from last year.

Any Idea Where to Find an Industrial-style Pasta Maker?

Tzanet on L'Acadie. Restaurant supply store, also fun to lok around.

Restaurant Nostos Souvlaki

Damn, I've been trying to keep this place a secret before people who don't know anything about good food start coming and they change the menu because someone complains that "this has too much garlic, how long is it going to take, where's my food, I have too wait for the chicken?"
Please don't change anything. I love everything about Nostros! Including the great service.

Pancake Day aka, Shrove Tuesday, Mardi Gras, Tuesday March 8

I would try Mesquite (Ambre restaurant) on Decarie. Chef Michel used to love this holiday and would go out of his way to celebrate it. Call them; 514-481-5066

Restaurant Closings - 2010

Mesquite is closed. Can't say I'm surprised. They started out so well and then they just started going downhill. What a shame, such a nice story behind their beginnings. Good luck to the four of them.

Where could I find Mozartkugel in Montreal?

Are they the marzipan and dark chocolate covered candies from Austria?

Zeppole Time

What is a Zeppole, I'm assuming its some kind of dessert.

Where to go for New Year's in Montreal

You couldn't pay me to go to Time Supper Club again. This by far the WORST place I have ever been to in my life.
I took about 25 people for my Birthday dinner, they rushed us because we were the first seating and were going other places that night. The food was meh, nothing to write home about, My salmon was overcooked. The bench we were sitting on colapsed with my 73 year old Aunt sitting next to me, no apologies were given and we actually had to fix it ourselves. Everytime we wanted to order another bottle of wine we actually had to get up and find the waiter. When it came time for the cake, the idiot waiter brought it out with 3 people at the table............Hello!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our bill was well over $2000.00, you would think that with people spending that much money they would take better care of you.
Don't waste your time or your money, there are much better places to eat and dance. (Even the Hollywood set don't waste their time there)

Poutine near NDG?

The poutine at Benedicts is great. They just added a few things to their menu and the poutine is one of them. I think it's because their fries are so good, homemade and the gravy is devine. I don't know why so many people like to pick on them, I think they are doing a wonderful job. Everything is always fresh and it seems to me that they make everything from scratch as well, not like some other restaurants in the area. Benedicts is perfect for you because it's in your area and they make a mean breakfast too. Don't listen to some of these other hounders, give it a try for yourself.

footlong hot dogs?

Hi everyone. Lately I've been thinking alot about Iles Etait Une Fois and Kazooz and remembering the great hot dogs, never mind the incredible burgers. Where can I get a foot long hot dog and do you think they were all beef?
I think they were.

Oyster Shack

Going to the MMFA tomorrow and need info on Oyster Shack. A few people have told me about their Chowder (That it's wonderful), I however, am not a chowder fan but I do love seafood. Anyone tried it?

The best bar / pub grub

I had really amazing Fish and Chips at Benedicts (of all places). They even had malt vinegar for the fries. The fish was light and the batter was crisp, as it should be. Fries were to die for.

Brunch on New Years Day in NDG

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I don't care for Mesquite, I had more then 1 bad experience there with food and staff, Orange is O.k but the potatoes are not up my alley. I love the potatoes at Cosmos but you can't impress inlaws at Cosmos (LOL) I've never had Dim Sum for brunch. Do you know if there are any places for Dim Sum in NDG and would they have omellettes as well?

Brunch on New Years Day in NDG

Looking for Suggestions. I always go to Benedicts and I love it, but I would like to try a different place.

Looking for Breakfast

I live in NDG and I too love the potatoes at Cosmos. If you're looking for traditional breakfast, not too expensive, La Belle province on St. Jacques is good. Great Breakfast from French crepes to huge omellettes is Benedicts on Monkland. B&M also has good breaky, but you have to put up with the nasty owners. Thats about it, the rest in this area are all trying to become either something they are not or something they will never be. If you are in the Plateau area around Mont Royal L'Avenue is great and there's always a line up.

M:Burger

There was more then 1 partner at I'll etait Une Fois, and they split up. When that happened two of them, Jeff and ? (I can't remember his name) opened up a place on Bishop called KAZOO'S and they had almost all the same food. After that the Chef worked at a place in Le Fouberg called 5th Avenue Burger. Since then (and I'm going back at least 20 years) i don't know, but I do know that a good burger is seasoned properly and cooked medium rare and the person who taught me that is there old chef ROMEO.
Does anyone happen to know who bought all of the old Antiques from that place, my mother lent them a whole bunch of stuff and i would love to get some of it back.

La Gioconda (Decarie)

I was just told that La Gioconda on Decarie has changed owners in the past few weeks and qhuality has plumeted as well. Friends were there over christmas and had to leave without eating due to poor service and lack of control. too bad it was a great resto.

New Year's Brunch

Are you looking for a la carte or buffet. If it's a la carte I suggest Benedicts on Monkland. they don't up their prices like many of the other breakfast joints, and unlike those other places you get service with a smile and good quality food. (Despite some remarks from my fellow foodies)

Early dinner near the Bell Centre - Nov 3rd game

Ye Olde Orchard on Mountain just north of Rene Levesque is a lot of fun. You can get a pretty good burger and a whole lot of beer and cheer.

New bakery/pastry shop

Just had a piece of birthday cake from cho cola and it was horrrible. The cake itself is dry and tasteless, it litterly crumbles on the plate and you can't even get a whole piece into your mouth without it falling off the fork. It was like they gave us 3 day old cake. When you are a brand new cafe/bakery it's important to put out your best product. I won't buy anything from them. Totally put off.

Monkland Village

I have lived, worked, socialized and grown up in this neighborhood and I think it's wonderful. The people who live around here know each other very well and we are certainly a tight group. For thumbs up I have to say; (Starting at Decarie and working down towards Grand) Cafe Orange, (breakfast) down- Mesquite (Chicken & ribs) down, Lezvos (greek) down, Pizza Pino- up, Tavern(e) up, Pizzadelic- down, Ye Olde Orchard (pub fare) up, Mykanos (haven't tried yet), Le Maistre (french) up, Chase (lebanese) up, Malabu (take away) up, Sushi shop- up, Al Dente- down, Soup & Noodles- down, Benedicts (breakfast) up, Monkland Grill- down. As for baked goods; Premier Moison (true baguette) up, Au pain dore- down, Choco-lat (cupcakes) down, Patisserie Nancy - up, Gryphon D'or (Best scones in Montreal) up. As for coffee they all kind of blend together. Best terrace is Second Cup to see and be seen as so many people seem so envious about.
If you like a neighborhood where everyone watches out for each other then this is that place, you can't find a better bunch of people anywhere.

Best Salads served

One of the best salads I've had in a long time was at Benedicts on Monkland last night. It was the Summer Salad and it had avacado, chicken, grilled peppers, mushrooms, onion, cranberries, strawberries, lettuce, tomato and cucumber and I'm sure it had a few other things that I can't seem to recall, they also had a great salad on the table d'hote; grilled vegetables with a warm almond encrusted goat cheese. I wanted to post about the great service there as well.

Casse-croutes, my guilty pleasure

Chez Claudette on Laurier, corner St. Denis.

The Ultimate Belgian Waffle (in Montreal)

Benedicts on Monkland will do one in a non traditional way with egg and cheese.

Bread by James McGuire

Ever since Taste of the Nation last week and seeing James McGuire there I've come to the realization that I miss his baked goods more than any other bakery, restaurant or butcher shop that has closed in our fare city in the last few years. Why can we not appreciate what we have here, Montreal used to be the restaurant capital of north america. We need to support our local artists in every way, be it food or art. Lets start taking care of eachother and give Mr. Mcguire our full support if he (HOPEFULLY) decides to reopen.

help-Eating in Montreal with my grandparents!

Philinos is located at 4806 Parc corner Villeneuve and they have a website. PHILINOS.COM I think they're wonderful. I've never been to Ferreiras.
