Knifewear coming to the Coast in July 2014

What are their hours? I'll have to let my Vancouverite friends know.

First time in Vancouver - with a baby

Off smelling.. and tasting.

They were selling them in Steveston though, not cheap. We saw a couple being purchased by an Chinese family.

Here's my thread from a couple of weeks ago.

http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/1018726

We went to Miko on Robson for sushi. Was nice and fresh. The uni (sea urchin) was not fresh, but we didn't get sick from it.

Bao Down was excellent as well. There's another thread about it.. it does a great variation on a Taiwanese "bao" (steamed bun with fillings).

Bao Down Coming to Old Lily Mae spot.

Back home now, but last week on Friday night we decided to take the rental down. With Google Maps it was a cinch. Circled around Gastown a few times before we found a parking spot on Powell just a few feet off Main.

Got there around 7 and it was relatively empty. Had one of each on the menu, sharing with the wife, with the exception of the $25 foie gras bao. Loved every delicious bite. I especially enjoyed the 2 Worlds Collide and wifey loved Bao Chicken Bao Bao.

Should have gone for seconds.. ;)

Then we went to Soft Peaks across the street.. kiddo was probably the youngest person in the area around 9pm that night. Was fun. Would do it again.

Is Gastown / Powell St. safe for walking through after rush hour?

Its either taking the train and getting off at Waterfront, or driving in from Richmond.. How is parking if the latter?

Baby Friendly Dining in Vancouver?

We stopped at the Manitoba Street popup for a quick lunch, though not quite a Taiwanese gua bao, the YVR and Flipside baos sure hit the spot.

Would like to try out the other location at some point this trip.

Wang's was the other one I vaguely remember.. I think it was on Chow several years ago I read about it. My wife thought I was crazy going all the way to Crystal Mall just to seek out a food court resto.

O'Tray! That's right.. that's what I was thinking of. I'm restaurant-menu fluent with Cantonese, just can't read/nor write.. CBC, you know.

Thank you grayelf!

Baby Friendly Dining in Vancouver?

Thanks for the explanation! The Radisson I'm staying at is the one on #3 across from Aberdeen Mall, I could have sworn there was some sort of order and sit down restaurant there at the top of the escalators.. Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

I don't mind paying a little more for quality, there's pretty much non-existent Shanghai/Taiwanese restaurants here in Edmonton, Alberta.

The 1YO is pretty well behaved.. going out to eat here she can sit through a large meal with family (usually 12-15 members) so I'm hoping she'll continue that trend out there.

Baby Friendly Dining in Vancouver?

Yes, sorry. I meant Dinesty (thanks LotusRapper).. I keep thinking back to the time we were in DTF in Bellevue..

With kid we aim to go to all the places early.. 11am lunches, 5pm dinners, so hopefully lineups won't be an issue.

HK BBQ Masters sounds good, it's within walking distance too. Will try to make it there. is it inside Superstore?

Robson Day will end up being quite busy.. we might have to fast 24 hours before doing that, there's a lot of places to hit... Miku looks good, never tried it but I'll add it to the list. Same for Guu.

Are there other Taiwanese (Gua Bao) or Shanghiaese places worth visiting? We used to go to Shanghai Wonderful (we like XLB's, Choy Pong Hai (egg dish on veggies made to look like crab))? You also mentioned lin's - is that http://www.linchinese.ca/?

We're at the Radisson Hotel, there was a quick Asian restaurant on the second floor; is it still there?

Baby Friendly Dining in Vancouver?

Last time we came to your fine city, Cafe Medina served us a wonder brunch, Salade Des Fruits was amazerling and Kimura was the go-to place for a killer omakase. Now I've been reading he's not there anymore.. :( Can anyone else compare?

We're visiting again in the next few weeks, but this time we've got a 1 yr old in tow. She's well behaved and loves eating what we eat, within reason.

What're some good recommendations on kid friendly restaurants in the Richmond/Vancouver area? We love anything and everything, especially Japanese food (raw & cooked), Korean tofu soup, and anything fresh.. staying in Richmond, near a train station, but we'll have access to a rental car for a few days.

Our usual favorites in Richmond include Chef Hung, Din Tai Fun, but we almost always find ourselves down at the end of Robson for ramen, Santouka (is it closed?) and Kintaro. Are food trucks big in Vancouver?

Vancouver for 3 days, suggestions?

Cool, thanks for that too.

Turns out we won't be renting a car.. guess we'll be staying in Richmond most of the time and taking the train to Robson on Friday.

Wow, thanks for the links. There are some bad reviews of the Dinesty there.. we've been to the one further south and loved it, but that was several years ago.

Staying at the Radisson Richmond. Might rent a car, not sure yet.

Vancouver for 3 days, suggestions?

Coming to Vancouver for a mini-vacation before baby pops... haven't rented a car yet - we're hoping to stick close to restaurants within walking distance of bus stops.

We traditionally go for taiwanese/shanghaiese restaurants, but we're not adverse to trying new things. I heard that there are some good Brazilian BBQ restaurants, but I don't remember the names.

We might try Shabusen Korean BBQ for dinner one evening. If there's better (subjective, I know), please do tell! I found the Ramen thread, wifey has already put down Santouku and Marutama as musts.

Anything else worth trying to stuff into our brief stay? It's turning into one big massive eatfest, but I'm not complaining.

We used to love Kimura Sushi, but I read that he sold his restaurant - has he resurfaced elsewhere in the area?

Thanks in advance,

Thermomix

There's others.. look up SideKIC. Can get one off Amazon for about $170US when they're in stock.. Granted they're not big commercial nice size units, but they fit the bill well.

Nineteen [Edmonton ]

Went there a few days ago, had a large party. Our waitress took great care to ensure we were well satisfied. Will definitely be back, next time for a tasting menu, which I'm told Chef Fung can create for parties of 8 or more with at least 24 hours notice.

They are indeed kid friendly and have a nice kids menu to boot!

ramen in Edmonton

If you're the adventurous type and willing to make your own broth, meat, sides, etc. you can buy single serving Ramen from Gourmet Express (75 st behind the KFC, north of Roper Road). It's $1.40 per pack (or $1.10 per if you buy a box of 40).

They also sell wonton noodles (wide and narrow) and supply their shanghai-ese noodles to local restaurants (like Tasty Choice).

Best place to buy bulk food items like rice flour in Edmonton?

You can get rice flour in packages from any Asian supermarket (T&T, Lucky 97, etc. in Edmonton). It's used often enough in Asian cooking that you can easily buy 4-5 bags of the stuff.

Edmonton Cake Shops?

Always find a reason to get a cake.. our favorites include La Favorite, Duchess, and oddly enough, Save-On-Foods.

We used to get cakes from Artistic Bake Shop some time ago, but for whatever reason stopped.

Are there any other good cake shops in Edmonton, with your favorites?

Thanks...

ramen in Edmonton

Last time I went by Meguro the were doing serious reno work inside. Sign on the door said "Closed" so I'm not sure if they're renovating or have shut down.

Nomiya isn't as good as they once were, as I had heard that their ramen guy had left.

Honestly, I don't know..

Singapore Style Jerky

I love me some good jerky. Especially the Singapore Style stuff. I usually stock up from Bee Kim Heng whenever I visit friends and family in Vancouver. I've been known to devour entire 1 lb packs in one sitting...

It's been a while since I've made the trip to Vancouver, so I've been in a jerky drought.. until one day my friend texted me that he found some Golden Island at Costco. I've found it at both the west and south Edmonton Costco stores.

This is the stuff:
http://www.goldenislandjerky.com/stor...

They also make beef jerky. I wonder if i can convince our Costco to bring that in.

It's good. Really good. Not BKH, but close. No burnt tips either. Only downside is that the product is from the USA. $11 for a 415g bag, that's almost half of what BKH charges.

So if you've got a craving for good asian style jerky, try this out. It's in the gum and candy aisle.

Best sushi in Edmonton

Sorry to bump.. I was told today that Kobe in Callingwood has changed hands. The Japanese guy behind the counter is no longer there, and that there were some advertisements in the local Chinese newspapers looking for waiting staff.

Where can I find a 6.5" round ginger grater in Edmonton?

I know it's not Edmonton but I sourced mine from Daiso in Richmond. Something to keep in mind if you know someone going to Vancouver.

Ginger Beer in Calgary?

Superstore and Sobeys primarily.. I do like Grizzly Paw but I prefer Crabbies' Ginger Beer brought in from the UK. Not sure who carries it in Calgary (maybe try Zyn?) but I get mine in Edmonton from Sherbrooke.
