Looking for classic soda bottles in Edmonton

check the local flea markets too..

Good Calzones or Panzerotti in Yeg

yes, I go regularly for lunch.

good stuff.. they recently acquired a truck and will be peddling their calzones around town.

Best sushi in Edmonton

Sorry to bump.. I was told today that Kobe in Callingwood has changed hands. The Japanese guy behind the counter is no longer there, and that there were some advertisements in the local Chinese newspapers looking for waiting staff.

Where can I find a 6.5" round ginger grater in Edmonton?

I know it's not Edmonton but I sourced mine from Daiso in Richmond. Something to keep in mind if you know someone going to Vancouver.

Ginger Beer in Calgary?

Superstore and Sobeys primarily.. I do like Grizzly Paw but I prefer Crabbies' Ginger Beer brought in from the UK. Not sure who carries it in Calgary (maybe try Zyn?) but I get mine in Edmonton from Sherbrooke.

Chinese Sandpots in Calgary

There's also that kitchen supply place on centre street north around 10th ave..

B&J Kitchen Supplies

Check there too.

Updates on Vietnamese restaurants in Edmonton

Went to Trang Tien (across from the old Mirama) again for lunch today.

Many changes.. prices have gone up 20-25%, menu changed, staff changes, interior decor changes, and most noticeably, while the soup was good going down, I'm super thirsty right now, having already downed a litre of water since I got back from lunch. Seems like they upped the MSG content in the soup ten-fold.

Was my favorite, not sure if I'll be going back any time soon. :(

Nathan's Dill Pickles

UPS can get pricey.. see if they'll ship USPS.

Dinner Recommendations in YEG?

We had a similar thing recently, and the place chosen was the Brazillian BBQ place, Pampa.

Though after the meatsicles and drinks, we all suffered from meatcomas and well, the night sorta ended there.

But the food was good! ;)

ISO: Chinese White Plain Buns (YEG)

Mmm... those look exactly like the "gua bao" we had at Facing East in Bellevue, WA.

Almost looks like you took the picture right off of my phone.

YEG Pho

Downtown workers have a new Pho place in Scotia Place. "Good Pho You" has opened up next to Amy's "Chicken for Lunch" down in their food court.

I had my doubts about Vietnamese fast food restaurants, but after my sister touted their MSG-free soups I had to give it a try. Yesterday I had a delux pho (8.50), today their vermicelli (8.50) with satay beef, lemongrass chicken, and 2 deep fried spring rolls. Both were filling, the soup was clear, hot, and tasty.

Also make sure you get their garlic hot sauce, it adds a nice touch of spicyness.

They also do banh-mi (subs) for around 5.50.

Kegs of Virgils Root Beer?

Augh.

Wifey refused to let me get more. Will return via air in August, but I don't see how I'm gonna get kegs into checked baggage. :(

Thanks for all the help though.. I'll scheme something up.

Kegs of Virgils Root Beer?

hey clutterer, no problem, thanks for the slop. ;)

Kegs of Virgils Root Beer?

Hi clutterer,

Thanks - do you have a favorite? Maybe I'll forgo bringing back a cooler full of fish to a cooler full of root beer.

Kegs of Virgils Root Beer?

Do you remember which WF? I'm driving out tomorrow so if I can find some that would be awesome!

Thanks.

PS: I called Dougie Dog's and they said they only have their own bottles, no Virgil's.

Kegs of Virgils Root Beer?

Looking for kegs (not bottles) of Virgil's Root Beer - I was able to find them in Seattle at World Market (only bottles at Whole Foods and QFM).. wondering if they're available in the GVR area - they're not anywhere to be found in Edmonton..

Thanks!

Need help narrowing down eats for upcoming weekend

Thanks Brunhilde. Very helpful. Sorry I meant to say Sheraton Bellevue at 100 112th Avenue.

From the maps the transit centre you're referring to looks to be on the opposite side of Bellevue City Hall, so it should be doable. The 550 seems to be what we're after.. is the walk towards Shiro's and Umi safe?

I'll bring comfortable shoes as well. :D

Road Trippin' - Kamloops, Victoria, Abbotsford, Chiliwack, Hope Suggestions?

mlgagnon, thanks for the suggestion. If time permits we'll definitely do the hwy 1 route back home, some variety in scenery. Only problem is I'm driving the whole way.. wifey won't learn to drive a manual.

Need help narrowing down eats for upcoming weekend

Just thought I'd bump this up - we're driving in from the North (think Edmonton, Alberta, Canada) and staying at the Four Points in Bellevue.

For this restaurant list, would it be best to drive in and find parking for them, or cab/train/bus?

Gotta research the transit system next..

Thanks!

Road Trippin' - Kamloops, Victoria, Abbotsford, Chiliwack, Hope Suggestions?

Hi all,

Going on a road trip from Edmonton to Jasper to Kamloops to Abbotsford then a jaunt in the US, then back around to Victoria. We go to Vancouver often enough so I'm gonna leave that out.

Are there any roadside diners or restaurants of note on the Highway #5 from Robson down to Hope, BC?

Also, been a while since we're in Victoria.. but Cafe Brio and Red Fish Blue Fish are on our list. Any other noteworthy suggestions? Do they still serve afternoon tea at the Empress Hotel?

Lastly, are there any noteworthy BC wines or beers from the microbreweries worth bringing home? I'd like to pick up a case of Joie Noble Blend.. (I went to high school with Heidi Noble :) )

Much thanks..

Best wines around town? Favorite Canadian wines?

I'm not a wine connoiseur, but at the moment I'm stocking up on Joie.

A Noble Blend is a nice, light, fruity (pineapple, strawberry, apricots, pears), white. We were introduced to that at a wedding on Victoria Island and end up buying 4 bottles to bring back. I've also had their rosee

After researching that winery, I found that I had gone to school with one of the owners of Joie too. Interesting fact. :)

YEG Dim Sum

Didn't like the landlords? Oh my. That's a sudden change of heart after being there for so many years now?

YEG Pho

Felix,
Ha.. I see you've been bitten by Chowhound's "smarts" too. Remove that Red Deer link, it's not relevant.

After our meal which both my friend and I thought was delicious, we asked if they had another operation elsewhere, and our waiter replied that the owners and kitchen people were originally those that owned Thanh Thanh downtown.

I, too, had the same thoughts as you do about Thanh Thanh's, we stopped going there years ago. Whenever we're downtown craving Pho, our stop is Trang Tien across from ex-Mirama. Good broth, good noodles, and great meat balls.

Hope that helps.

YEG Pho

A friend took me to Rice Paper in the west end today, nestled between Stony Plain Road East and West, on the west side of 178 st in a stand alone building.

It's been open about 9 months, run by the original owners of "Thanh Thanh Oriental Noodle House" on 101 and 107th Ave.

Their pho was good, and you can order it three ways - North/Central/South Vietnamese style. Also, their satay sticks were excellent.

Also around that area is La Pagode, 1 block North of WEM in the same strip mall housing the McD's and Boston Pizza.

Hoang Long had poor service and their Pho wasn't the least authentic. Wouldn't go back there.

need good hot and sour soup and wonton in yyc

When I lived in Calgary Spicy Hut on Edmonton Trail South was my go-to place for good hot and sour soup. Peking Garden up in Varsity also did a decent job.

YEG Dim Sum

I read on another board that Mirama had closed recently due to outstanding rent, wages, etc.

Edmonton's Amazing Shawarma.

Hmm, I never knew about Costco Dunn's. I'll have to try that, thanks for the tip!

One of the ex-chefs at Teddy's is a friend of ours, I'll have to press him for his Corned Beef recipe.

Chinese Barbeque on 97th Street in Edmonton - Which is best ?

Felix,
Can't answer the first question as I don't usually go there for BBQ (I like their baked buns), but at SuperBBQ I like their BBQ Pork (not the char siu, but rather siu yok(?) rith the crispy skin). Depends too which cut, I don't like the meatier dry pieces, I like them with more flavor, say around the ribs. I have them cut out the ribs before they chop them into little pieces.

Good Buddy Heritage does have a BBQ counter. We usually go have a sit down meal with char siu and/or BBQ duck.

I don't particularly like the BBQ duck available here in Edmonton, way too much fat under the skin.. in Hong Kong and also in China, we had BBQ duck that was much leaner and just as flavorful and juicy.

Chinese Barbeque on 97th Street in Edmonton - Which is best ?

Like Anonymoose, I thought Barbeque King City was awesome.. I tried to convince their owners to share the recipes but no such luck.

Currently go to Super BBQ Delight. Doesn't come close, but it's good enough to satisfy the occasional craving.

Good Buddy in Heritage has good BBQ Duck and Char Siu.

ISO Delicious Chinese Dumplings (YYC)

You can find pork and veggie dumplings (frozen) at Chuen Ming, next to Banh Mi Thi Thi across from the Harry Hayes building downtown.

If you order 500+, you can ask that they don't add any MSG. We prefer those, and often make the drive down from Edmonton to buy dumplings. :)

Han's was excellent prior to the cook's illness, his family took over and it's almost as good.

Good luck!
