HELP!!! Attending a Convention in Mexico City in December...

Would appreciate any recommendations in or around Avenida Paseo de la Reforma, Colonia Juarez. Wouldn't mind traveling a little outside the hotel area.

We will also be taking a little detour to Guadalajara, to take the Tequila Express Tour. We'll be staying in Centro Historico, Guadalajara. De una vez, que no?

Anything from fine dining to taco stands would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance, I know I could count on you!!!!
Gracias se agradece muchisimo!

Pasadena Recommendations

Kateats, in case you refer back to this post (or visit the area again):

My wife and I have really enjoyed "The CrêpeVine" (Bistro and Wine Bar) on Mills Place Alley. They offer a wide selection of wine to accommodate every palate.

Don't let the name fool you, it isn't just crepes; they offer many other dishes... Hope you get to try this one day!

Elementary School Chalupa

OMG Mike! I thought I was the only one that longed for these. I loved those Chalupas!!!

I also loved the 'meat pockets' that “Dabruins07” mentioned, actually these were my favorite... They had a slightly flaky crust on the outside and seasoned ground beef with cheese on the inside. I'm really surprised no one else has posted anything on these delectable treats. In my case I went to Huntington Drive Elementary School during 1978-1985, and I know for a fact that mostly all elementary schools around the area served them.

Thanks Mike and Dabruins for reminding me of these. Now, I must go on a rampage to see if I could find these (or something close to them), and will let you know. If you find any thing similar, please inform us.

Sandwich Contest

Cook's Tortas in Monterey Park. I've recently had their California torta, and their torta Ahogada. I really enjoyed them. Went there two days in a row! They claim to have many recipes; there's surely one that will catch your eye on the big chalkboard wall menu. Their sourdough ciabatta is baked fresh every day, and I think this is in part what makes them so good... Looking forward to trying a few more!

Cook's Tortas

Webb, this place is located in Monterey Park, not Alhambra. I which it would have been in Alhambra, because then it would be closer to home!!!

WOW! If you are looking for a place that offers unheard of and traditional tortas (sandwiches) search no more!!!

This place has them all; according to the owner he has collected hundreds of recipes and puts them on the chalkboard menu at any given time. At my recent and first visit, I had the CALIFORNIA torta (Grilled chicken, tomato cream, salsa, avocado, lettuce, fried sage). It was gooood!!! It was accompanied by their Ham and Cheese macaroni salad, and their freshly squeezed lemonade. Both excellent!

Just today, I had their torta AHOGADA (Slow cooked pork, spicy double dip), I loved it! The taste is very close to authentic (Jalisco style); it was lacking the beans though. The only suggestions I would make the next time I visit and order the Ahogada, is that they but more escabeche (pickled onions), and add the beans. Other than that, the Red Potato Salad was awesome, along with the Cucumber-Lime agua fresca. So refreshing. I recommend this place very highly, if you're into Tortas.

This place is definitely worth the trip, especially for those of us that live in the Northeast part of L.A. (sorry King Torta). The only drawback is that it closes too early, at 4pm. :(

Looking forward to trying a different one every week. :)

Tangier. Curious, was it good for you?

We were there last night to see a band perform (Ceci Bastida); we were directed to the far end stage, which had a curtain as an entry way (my wife was struggleling with the curtain for a bit to find the slit).

I was quite impressed with their decoration. It seemed to be pretty happening for a Wednesday night. I got the feeling that there were a lot of locals and regulars, mid 20's to early 30s. Everything seem OK, until we went through the curtain to the bar/ stage area.

The area was stuffy; it was also a little too dark for my taste, at first I thought my eyes needed to adjust, but no it remained that way thought the night (unless you count the spontaneous bright light flashing, that really bothered everyone's eyes, especially those sitting closer to the stage).

I thought all of this was going to be compensated by the good service and good drinks. Boy was I mistaken! The waitress was missing in action, and when she did make an appearance she did not even acknowledge us had it not been that my wife had to flag her down to get her attention (about 25 minutes after our arrival).

Then we ordered our drinks, we had to repeat our drinks to her about 3 times, and let me tell you the band wasn't that loud, nor were we ordering 'rare' unheard of exotic cocktails. We ordered a Cape Cod and two Cadillac Margaritas. When she returned with our drinks, my wife had specified a Grey Goose Cape Cod that was not GG, my wife knows her GG, and even I could tell that was not GG! It was very cheap vodka that left you with an awful aftertaste. Nothing that my Caddy would not wash away. WRONG! My margarita was not premium at all!!! I verified with the waitress, thinking that she may have mixed up our drinks with someone else, and she said no those are made with our premium tequila. Jose Cuervo Gold (or equivalent) is not a premium tequila lady!!! Those drinks were expensive, not even worth the cheap alcohol they contained, $10 a pop. After I drank only a quarter of my drink, I requested a straight shot. I asked what tequilas were available and opted for a classic mid-range reposado, Cazadores, and was really looking forward to it. Once again disappointed, sadly to say that was not Cazadores ($11), the guy at the bar must think that his patrons don't know a thing about tequilas.

All our drinks were practically left untouched, at this point I would have probably excused myself and left, had it not been that we had opened a tab, and Ceci had already taken the stage. $45.00 bucks down the drain (+ tip). Money I could have used for gasoline, which probably would have tasted better than the drinks they served us!

IMHO, go only if your favorite band is performing. Stay away from the mixed drinks, order only beer straight out of the bottle. Sorry, didn't care too much after this to try the food. Did I miss anything??

Best "Huevos Rancheros" in Los Angeles...?

Thank you SusanCinSF for the update and review on Teresita's!!! A friend of mine recommended this restaurant around 9 years ago (or maybe longer...) went there a couple of times but haven't been there since.

One thing I do remember was the friendly greeting by Teresita herself, and the many follow-ups to make sure everything was OK..

We had the Huevos a la Mexicana and Machaca, which were quite good, no complaints. Everybody knew everybody. This was a true, or is a true family restaurant. Oh, and the owner insisted we try the atole de ciruela and champurrado, it was a very nice experience, like visiting your favorite aunts house or visiting your grandmother. BTW, she did not charge us for the atole or the champurrado :)

If it's still as I remember it, then I highly recommend it! Must make time to reacquaint myself...and try their Huevos Rancheros.

CHORIZO!!!

Hello Chowhounds!

I need your help. Where can I find good (uncooked) chorizo in the Los Angeles area? By good I mean, not too greasy, and just the right amount of spices. Will travel to East LA, Huntington Park, South Gate, if I have too :)

Home made style is preferred (Beef or pork)... So please include "carnicerias", and/or high end deli's. Thanks!
