Gallaria Umberto: did they change the arancini?

had one last monday and it was the same as always. 1 potato, 1 rice, 1 slice and no dinner is necessary.

Ummmm....heh.....anyone know if CF Donovan's in Hyde Park is opening soon?

the hyde - agree about breakfast. the pancakes are fantastic, but the homemade sausage was a little dry (but very peppery). Had the grilled meatloaf last week - excellent, on fantastic mashed with a great sauce. salmon burger is also really good.

Dottie's in Hyde Park

i meant to ask when i was there this weekend, but forgot.

food was good. their homemade sausage patty is very good, peppery and flavorful, but I feel like it could use a little more fat. pancakes were nice and crispy around the edges, soft in the middle - why can't i make them like that at home?

looks like they have a good selection of smallish brewery beers (gearys, smuttynose, etc.), and the new manager and waitstaff was great. next time i'll have to try their burger and homefries.

Eggplant w/o tomatoes - recipe needed please

For a side dish, I like to slice them about half inch thick, drizzle with olive oil and grill. While they're grilling i make a simple vinigrette with olive oil, white wine vinegar, a whole peeled clove of garlic (smashed a little bit to release flavor) and s+p. once they're grilled, I toss them in the dressing and serve them with grilled bread, pita, whatever is around. they're great at rom temp, too, so you can make it well in advance.

Cheap and Fun Restaurant for a Birthday

courtside lounge (150 yards from the lechmere stop) on thursday or friday nights is fun. if you call they will reserve a table for you. food is on the cheaper side, but adequate (my wife likes the grilled chicken sandwich, and the fries are decent, crispy). the reason to go is that they have a HUGE book of karaoke songs, and a very supportive and diverse crowd, so there will be plenty of fun. i think it starts at 9pm. no outdoor seating, though.

lobster appetizer

you could make a simple lobster salad (lemon, mayo, maybe celery, s&p), buy some small croissants, cut them in half and stuff them. easy and tasty.

way too many onions

julia child's french onion soup is a delicious, easy solution to your problem. and you can make caramelized onions with any extra onions - they'll shrink to nothing.

i also like the pickled onion idea, especially given that it is burger season.

Lobsters for a lobster roll party

bjs had a similar sale a few weeks ago. got a great 2.25lb, stuffed with meat. hard shell, but they didn't specify hard or soft shell - might have just gotten lucky.

steak ta tare

last time i was at lumiere (this is over a year ago) they had an outstanding beef tartare special. It was sort of thai influenced, with a red curry sauce and lemongrass oil, i think. Nice contrast of the cool beef and the heat of the red curry.

i agree, but only because 930 is my usual bedtime.

if you can get a table at 530 or 6 you might be the only ones there for a little bit, but you still won't get out of there before 9.

If you stick with 930 and don't do the tasting menu, one of you or your spouse needs to get the lacquered foie gras. i have dreams about this dish.

last time my wife and i went we just said we each wanted 3-4 glasses with the meal, but different types, and they split them without us asking, so we got to try 8 different wines for a very reasonable price. hewho's right that they are generous pours (at least they were my night).

Is CF Donovan's in Hyde Park Open Yet?

I have gotten fish for grilling at the fish market in cleary (believe it's called Blue Water Fish Market) a number of times in the past. Usually just get a decent-sized snapper, and they've always been nice looking, fresh and delicious off the grill. The only food I had gotten in the past were the pattys or a piece of coco bread to go.

This past weekend I decided to branch out and try the fish sandwich. You can chose your fish; I just got catfish. They cut it off of a fresh filet, not frozen, bread it and then fry it as you wait (takes about 10 minutes start to finish). The breading is light and crispy, and the fish was fried perfectly - moist inside. They serve it on homepride bread. You can get cheese, but I just had tartar sauce. It was delicious. looking forward to trying their fish and chips, with maybe a different type of fish.

They also had some good looking fish curry and what looked like some spicy fried chicken that also looked good.

The guy who owns the place is incredibly nice.

Lunch Near the Aquarium??

Sel de la Terre is excellent and, though not casual-casual, you tend to see a lot of folks in jeans / tourist garb due to the proxiity to the aquarium. the steak frites is excellent, as is the charcuterie plate. for casual in the north end, i think it's hard to beat galleria umberto (5 minute walk). it's on hanover st.

Any Restaurants in Readville?

not sure it qualifies as a restaurant, but tutto italiano makes an amazing italian sub. they also have exceptional homemade mozzarella and ricotta if you're cooking at home.

How do you make your burgers?

I like brisket, single ground, with just salt and pepper. On the bbq, I usually do a 2-level method where I have one side of the grill very hot, and the other side empty (usually use a mixture of charcoal and hardwood). I first cook it over indirect heat with the grill closed until it gets to rare / medium-rare (my prefered doneness). Then I open the grill and move it over the very hot direct heat to quickly sear. This method works especially well when cooking for folks that like their burgers medium or more, because it gets them cooked evenly (rather than overcooking the outside and leaving the inside rare), avoids crumbly dry meat on the outside, and seems to result in an all-around juicier burger. also don't undersalt.

Sausage help

i think you'll still want to add some fat (should be about 2-1 or lower meat to fat ratio). i would go with fresh belly if you can put your hands on it, but salt pork will work. it shouldn't mess up the flavors at all.

Townsend's - Hyde Park

I only stopped in for a drink, but I agree with the first poster - the beer menu is fantastic (murphys and BBC pale ale, 2 of my favorites, on tap), and the food menu looks great. Prices are around 5-12 for 1st course, 17-24 for mains. Some really good looking choices. Also really looking forward to the brunch menu (which the bartender said should be up and running within a couple months).

Clio Tonight - To tasting menu, or not to tasting menu, that is the question

i think if you haven't been and probably won't go again, the tasting menu is a good call. lots of different, interesting preparations, and each time i've done it i haven't left hungry. I think it's around $135 or so pp. you should confirm that one of the courses is going to be the lacquered foie gras - i have dreams about this dish (if you don't do a tasting, someone in your party should get it). for drinks, my wife and i ussually tell them that we want to have about 3-4 glasses of wine each, paired to the courses, but different types of wine if possible. last time we went, they split the glasses for us, so we each had a run of 4 different half glasses of white, and 2 different half glasses of red, and a dessert wine. very nice.

First time at G. Umberto

the red is still chilled. and delicious.

i second the panzarotti idea. delicious deep fried mashed potatoes, browned to perfection, with a chunk of mozzarella in the middle. very yummy, and i don't think you'll find them at many other places in boston.

also agree about the calzones. not worth it. i'd recommend you just get a couple extra slices of pizza instead.

and i am jealous.
