3 days in Savannah

am in Savannah this weekend - thanks for the helpful replies! am staying right around the corner from the Crystal Beer Parlor and wanted to add it to the list. really low-key, comfortable vibe, super friendly staff, and a great cup of crab stew that was thick with crabmeat. nice salad with sauteed shrimp, oranges, almonds, cranberries, and pickled ginger(!). i was dining alone with my book as a companion, and felt very at ease.

kaysville/layton/ogden utah

Hi y'all-

We'll be in Utah w/a rental car for 5 days, starting next weekend. Would love your recs for budget meals, especially taquerias & breakfast. Thai is also high on our list, as is a quiet place to settle in for tea and reading. One of us is an omnivore the other a bit pickier, both of us are eating a lot less meat these days. We love supporting local businesses (I've seen Sills but haven't been there yet) and are open to chains. Veggie options appreciated, fish tacos would win our hearts!

Thanks much in advance, looking forward to your suggestions.

Atlanta holes in the wall?

hmmmm...maybe cafe 458 on edgewood ave. for brunch? it's in a funky part of town, and all the proceeds go to benefit the samaritan house which serves homeless men and women. the website is www.cafe458atl.com.

Atlanta possibilities, no car but MARTA OK

take marta to the decatur station. downtown decatur is a nice walking area with lots of shops and restaurants to pick from. the brick store pub is a reliable choice for good bar food, and leon's full service gastropub is getting a lot of attention these days (i think they have the same owners). taqueria del sol is great for inexpensive tacos and brisk service. a new steakhouse has opened recently, but i can't remember the name.

oh, and as a native of atlanta who was raised on the varsity, i still get cravings for french fries and chocolate milkshakes. it's not what it used to be, but every once in awhile, it hits the spot. have a good trip!

weekend in birmingham

thanks so much for the response! i've been looking through the previous posts about birmingham, and it seems like there's so much info that i'm having trouble sorting it out. this is quite helpful.

weekend in birmingham

hi hounds-

i'll be in birmingham for a wedding in early march. i'm looking for recs for weekend breakfast and lunch spots, tea/coffee, and late night post-event noshing. i'm open for whatever - it doesn't need to be fancy, just good. all suggestions are appreciated.

thanks, y'all!

Weekend in Atlanta - restaurant recommendations? (including Valentine's Day)

OK Cafe at I-75 and Northside Dr. is a great spot for breakfast/brunch/lunch. We really enjoy Agave in Cabbagetown for a nice meal on Saturday night. It's southwestern - not Italian - but a lively atmosphere and good food in the $15-20 range.

Dinner and Breakfast Options in Tucker, GA

These are all great suggestions!! We love L'Thai. It's a bit more expensive than other Asian restaurants, but worth it. They have a big wine list, though we don't drink so I'm not sure about their offerings. A nice place to go with a group.

Funky vibe and coffee in Atlanta - help out a first-timer!

Haven't been to R. Thomas on Peachtree Street in a few years, but it is a funky 24 hour spot with sandwiches and other options on the menu. They lean towards organic and health conscious foods, but there are plenty of deviations as well. Have a good trip!

Thanksgiving in Alpharetta, Roswell, or Duluth, GA

Hi y'all-

One of my clients is looking for a restaurant that would be open on Thanksgiving in the Alpharetta, Roswell, or Duluth area. If you have any recommendations, I would appreciate it! I'm going to check with Greenwood's on Green Street, but am not certain that they are open on Thanksgiving Day for anything but catering.

Thanks in advance-
stacey.

gatlinburg, tn: seeking recent recommendations

hi y'all-

my partner and i are headed to gatlinburg for a conference next week, and i've searched the boards for ideas. many threads seem to be pretty old, so i thought i would throw a request for recent recommendations out there, especially breakfasts (biscuits and gravy!) and dinners. we don't need fine dining and are more than happy to try something off the beaten path. chain restaurants are ok, too, if they are the best option.

thanks in advance for your response!

Moving to Atlanta - Need to find the following

What a great thread! Here are my suggestions:

1. Taqueria del Sol
2. Shorty's or Fellini's
3. Not a fan of sushi.
4. Bagel Palace, Goldberg's, Muss & Turners
5. West Egg
6. Dancing Goat in Decatur
7. Chocolate Bar in Decatur
8. Vortex

Hope your friend has a smooth transition and enjoys our city!

Best Trader Joe's cookies?

I am totally addicted to the vanilla wafers right now. Tried the choc. chip dunkers, and they were good, but the vanilla wafers are over the top. Will try the joe-joe's in place of oreos for truffle recipe, too. I like that the ingredients are pretty simple, it makes them taste better than most store brands, imo.

What's a Chick-Fil-A?

The wheat bun is a bit better - not as doughy and a little bit more flavor. You have to pay extra for it, which is the kicker. I pass by a CFA on the way home from work, and once in a blue moon stop for a sandwich and a lemonade.

Best vanilla extract

I don't make my own vanilla, but I do like to keep vanilla sugar on hand for baking. I score a vanilla bean and put it in an airtight container filled with sugar. After a few weeks, the sugar is infused with lovely vanilla aroma.

Atlanta--Near CNN (or not)

South City Kitchen is a short drive away in Midtown, and is a good bet for drinks and upscale Southern cuisine.

It makes me happy when...

Love this thread!

It makes me happy when...
...I eat a really good meal with people I enjoy spending time with.
...I open the fridge and see more fresh, healthy food and less take out containers and processed foods.
...I come home from work and can make dinner because the kitchen is well stocked.

Date restaurant in Buckhead (ATL) GA???

Haven't been to Lola myself, but judging from what I've read, it might be the kind of scene you're looking for. Bluepointe is another option. Have fun!

Just got back from Gatlinburg

thanks for the update! i'll be there this summer for a conference.

Vegetarian Restaurants in Atlanta

We double-date with another couple about once a month, and usually plan for dinner out. One of our party has recently decided to become a vegetarian, and now prefers to dine at vegetarian restaurants (as opposed to restaurants with veggie choices). This past weekend, we went to Harmony on Buford Highway, which we all enjoyed very much. I'd love to hear your recommendations for other vegetarian restaurants - especially interesting, ethnic choices, if any exist.

Thanks, y'all!

Atlanta - restaurants near the Carter Center

There are lots of choices in the area. Eclipse di Sol or Pura Vida tapas bar on North Highland are nearby. You're also quite close to Carroll Street Cafe in Cabbagetown.

How's Floataway Cafe in ATL??

I had a wonderful meal there in late January, with good service.

MARTA Friendly Restaurants

Oh, yes, and you can catch the new Georgia O'Keefe exhibit while you're there.

what is everyone cooking for valentine's Day?

We're having a bake-off at work, and I'm making red velvet cupcakes as my entry.

Why fage?

I loved Fage from the moment I tried it. It's much milder than American yogurt to me, and it's richer and creamier. It's slightly tart, but it doesn't have the sour aftertaste that other yogurts have. I eat it with fruit and honey, in place of sour cream on burritos and other savory things, and, most recently, with oatmeal pancakes and warm chunky applesauce. Yum.

Macaroni & Cheese Party...

I think fruit goes so well with cheeses. Molly Katzen has a recipe for raspberried vegetables that she suggests as a side for a meal of pasta with a creamy alfredo sauce. It's basically lightly steamed vegetables marinated in a raspberry vinaigrette. You could continue the fruit theme with a fruit crumble/crisp/cobbler dessert and hard apple cider and/or really good regular apple cider to drink.

This is such a fun idea for a party - I hope you have a great evening!

ATL - nice early dinner along I-75

I second the suggestion for OK Cafe. It's right off of the interstate with lots of familiar choices and an upbeat atmosphere.
