Good Health Food Store

I'm taking the plunge and doing the Eat to Live 6 week food plan. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good health store that sells raw food products like raw nut butter?

Low Carb Dessert

thanks everyone for these thoughts. it's tough to want to celebrate someone's birthday when they cannot indulge in goodie cake eating. based on everyone's opinions, i've decided to buy her a gift certificate for a cake! how's that for a compromise? that way she can pick up the goodie when she's fully detoxed and i can feel like a good friend who is not going to sabotage her best laid plans! thanks for all the rec's. i definitely want to try this low carb cheesecake thing at cheesecake factory.

Low Carb Dessert

I have a friend who is celebrating a birthday tomorrow and i'd love to get her a cake or a birthday treat. she happens to be on this detox diet right now where she's not allowed refined sugars or carbs. I was wondering if any of LA's dessert places offer a low carb cake or treat that i could pick up.

any suggestions?

Ethiopian eats

I just ate in San Diego at Red Sea Ethiopian restaurant and it was so so good. i'm excited to try a restaurant here in Los Angeles. Any strong rec's with dishes i must must try?

i had the injera bread with a spicy lentil, cabbage and collard greens. it was yummy, but i'm hoping to expand my palate.

thanks for the thoughts!

Anyone elso try Il Capriccio Pizzeria yet?

i went there last night. the dining area looked really nice but i wish they would have told us they did not have alcohol available yet. my friend and i just wanted to have some wine and appetizers so when we were seated we were disappointed to have to leave.

their manager was very apologetic and told we could get a bottle of wine from tiger or whatever that restaurant next door was and bring it back. but it was a bit too much trouble for us so we ended up at niko niko sushi. i'll be back to il cappriccio though, the menu looked very interesting.

What's the deal with Highland Perk?

i was just there today and could tell the staff is still trying to get the hang of the run of the place. but they were super willing to please. i like that everything there is new, new tables, couches, chairs--better to enjoy it now than wait for the couches to get worn and tattered with everyone's jean germs. ya know?

i ordered a vegetarian sandwich and it was a veggie pattie with choice of bread, i got an italian roll. pretty good for cafe food. i also got the iced coffee, but i enjoyed mine. i like that it's free wireless, glad to have something in highland park and now i imagine i'll be hanging out in my neighborhood more! a toast to highland perk! welcome to the neighborhood.

Neighborhood Joints

This question isn't to find the "spot". really, i just want to ask if there is a small place in your neighborhood that you enjoy going to. not the most popular, maybe not even the best food--but its got the neighborhood vibe and you keep going back?

for me it is this little corner restaurant on Figueroa and Ave 37 in Highland Park called La Abeja. it's not the snazziest diner, the hours are modest, just breakfast and lunch, but the waiter is attentive and generous with coffee, the food is made to order, the food is always solid---their carne en mole rojo is just fantastic, they run out of their specialty friday soups by lunchtime, the prices are always really so refreshing, and best of all, just a walk across the street from my home.

do you have a neighborhood joint you love that isn't overrun by crowds and zagat postings?

What is the best Indian restaurant in LA?

bharat bazar on washington. simply divine. the flavors burst everywhere in my mouth, the ambiance is nil, but the food--you can't get away from how amazing it is.

DAIKOKUYA - amazing ramen, but avoid after 6pm at all costs

well, i wouldn't say that because i really love their ramen. the noodles are perfect in their al dente-ness. i love how much scallions are served in my noodles, the portions are huge. wonderful. i don't get broth like that in most places. but yeah, they could clean up their service a bit.

Pasadena midweek lunch

i enjoyed the food at firefly. it's california fusion for sure with a selection from many different cuisine traditions. i had an heirloom tomato salad that defied my expectations. they serve grits that were creamy and amazing. my only gripe is that their dessert is not that spectacular.

DAIKOKUYA - amazing ramen, but avoid after 6pm at all costs

the funniest thing about eating at daikokuya is while you're seated and trying to have pleasant conversation with your companion you look over at the 30 people huddled together at the cramped doorspace staring at you silently urging you to eat faster. it'd be hilarious if it weren't so uncomfortable.

The Best Moderately Priced Restaurants

i really like gingergrass in silverlake. i consider myself a big snob when it comes to vietnamese food. i prefer mine in the form of street vendor sitting on a plastic stool ambiance. so gingergrass with its clean utensils and organized tables seemed sketchy to me. but if you bypass the desire for authenticity, you'll enjoy gingergrass's huge portions and well composed versions of viet cuisine. i really liked it and thought it was very moderately priced for shishi ethnic cuisine.

best is having breakfast there on a sunday when meters are free. good food. good service. solid prices. it's my little secret spot. love it.

Authentic Tiramisu

I love tiramisu, i prefer mine on the wet side. but i cannot remember the last time i had a good tiramisu that was not all cream or all cake, that wasn't dry or wasn't blah.

i hate to say this, i swear it's been several years--but i feel like the last good tiramisu i had was at the cheesecake factory.

I've looked for recipes, but i'm deterred by having to make any effort in the kitchen. anyone have a great tiramisu spot they would rave on and on about?

Pinkberry-what's the deal? [moved from L.A. board]

i love pinkberry but haven't had it in months because of the rather expensive price. i'd rather get a nonfat yogurt at costco for $1.55.

KP's Vietnamese Deli - Yummy!

i think you are referring to Buu Dien--which means post office in vietnamese--but it is a small deli that i LOVE. the food is fresh and authentic and cheap. i LOVE this place.
