Do-not-miss Lyon?

Hi

Am a NYC hound who will be in Lyon later this summer. We're renting an apartment so we can enjoy some of the best stuff from the markets but I am also seeking advice from fellow Chowhounders for the best dining options in Lyon.

Having scoured the board here, it seems like recommendations are quite old and things have changed in some of the places previously highly recommended.

Price is no object and we will travel anywhere for amazing food. We're looking for traditional bouchons and any other places that showcase the delicious food of the region.

I have noted some places down but am not sure of their quality at all. These include: La Nef Desfous, Tire Bouchon, La Layon, La Merciere, Cafe des Federations, Brasserie Nord (one of the Paul Bocuse brasseries) and Leon de Lyon.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Barcelona tapas and paella

Hi

Am a NYC chowhound who will be visiting Barcelona soon. We're not looking to explore the molecular gastronomy places during this visit but are much more interested in finding the best tapas/small plates and paella. We don't have time to go to Valencia this time around but I am sure there are great paella places in Barcelona too.

So far, for tapas I have:
-Cal Pep
-Tasca el Corral
-Quimet i Quimet
- Tossa
-Casa Jacinta
-Bar Pinoxto in La Boqueria
-El Quim de la Boqueria

Are we off base here and/or missing great tapas/small plate options? Price is no matter and we will travel anywhere for super food.

I have nothing yet for the best paella yet unfortunately so great recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

must eat Denver

Thanks everyone for the wonderful recommendations and sorry it has taken me so long to post.

We had a GREAT trip to Denver.

We loved ChoLon, Euclid Hall, Rioja and Frasca! The meals we had there and the service at all four places rivaled the best of NYC. Really amazing quality and variety. Had two super breakfasts at Snooze as well.

Osteria Marco was good, but not great. I felt like the service was off a bit and while the cheeses and chacuterie were super, the main courses left us somewhat underwhelmed.

Our most memorable experience was at MountainSun in Boulder. We stumbled upon this little brewpub while shopping and wandering before dinner at Frasca. The staff were so welcoming and we met some of the nicest folk ever. They introduced us to some great brew-mixes (try the FY ex when you are next there!) and made great pub companions. I think we spent some of the best hours of our CO trip at MountainSun!

thanks again for the great suggestions. You all nailed the best places for us to chow!

Thanks so much everyone! I've made reservations already at Rioja, Euclid Hall, Cholon, Osteria Marco and Frasca. Cannot wait to try them all. Will also try to make it to Biker Jims for a dog.

Is there a bakery or desert spot we must not miss?

Thanks again for your great recs!

I'm a NYC chow hound who will be in Denver for four nights this November. We'll be downtown near the convention center but outstanding food is what we're looking for. Distance and cost are no object----just absolute deliciousness of all types for any and all meals.

Thanks for your suggestions!

NYC hound in Lisbon and Evora

Hi, we ordered from the Mozambican menu items which are indicated as such on the menu. The upstairs room had phenomenal views and would be great for a work dinner. The service was impeccable and the manager was extremely gracious.

We had a wonderful dinner at Frei Contente yesterday. It really was tucked away I must say and it took us a bit to figure out the numbering on the street. There were clearly several regulars there as well as some tourists and the food was really good.

Today's lunch was Ponto Final and I have to say, there is no way anyone should miss this place when visiting Lisbon. What a fantastic location. The large shrimpt today were out of this world

Thanks Vinhotinto75 and will keep you posted

NYC hound in Lisbon and Evora

Vinhotinto75 we are in your beautiful city and have enjoyed every minute so far. The weather is perfect and the food has been amazing.

Last night we went to Ibo and it was delicious. More tonight......

obrigada again

London Breakfast's near Sofitel St. James?

oh well then! we really don't want posh. we are looking for a simple and quick but god breakfast before we head off for the day. Our lunches and dinners (thanks to all the chowhounds on this board) are amazing so breakfast should be quick and light and NOT posh!!

London Breakfast's near Sofitel St. James?

Hi

Any recommendations for breakfasts near the Sofitel St. James? Nothing posh required at all....just must be delicious.

Thanks in advance

NYC hound in Lisbon and Evora

Actually we have a bigger problem on our hands than just Ramiro sadly. Coming from New York where everything stays open all the time, I've been totally presumptious about our Lisbon dining options.

I just checked a bunch of websites and all three of our dinner places (Ibo, Churasco da Graca and Cervejaira Barcabela) are closed on Sundays.

Back to square one......not sure what is open that day except Bonjardim for lunch

NYC hound in Lisbon and Evora

oy, just checked the Ramiro website and its closed till sept 8. OH NO! AAARGH

NYC hound in Lisbon and Evora

Hi Taylorhameggandcheese, thanks for the suggestion. We are there in August (starting this coming saturday) so that makes me worried about Ramiro. I really want to go there. Will have to run the list before we leave so we're not disappointed. Will totally look into 100 Maneiras. I wish we had more days there.

NYC hound in Lisbon and Evora

I cannot wait to get there! We leave on Friday and will be in Lisbon Saturday AM. Everything, absolutely everything I've read makes me want to get there sooner.

Glasgow for NYC foodie?

Hi there. Thanks for the heads up re location. We'll take taxi's there I imagine. They offered us three pre-arranged menus to choose from for the adults and noted that the chef will be able to handle the children with us no problem. One of the menu options (the most pricey) had the grand dessert but the one we picked has a choice of a hot chocolate pudding, a creme brulee or a cheese platter. Will keep you posted!

And they were so accomodating when I emailed them regarding our group dinner with 15 adults! In NYC, they'd have required a full payment in advance and probably my first child to hold the reservation!

yay! thanks. I've been wondering where to go for some great whiskey. thanks crispysaltysweet.

Cool thanks. Very much looking forward to our trip. Glad you let me know about the service too.

NYC is crazy isn't it?

Thanks curiouseater!

One night we have a big group of us for dinner (15 adults!) and I was thinking of trying to reserve a table at two fat ladies at the buttery. Seemed not too overpriced and good. Thoughts?

Thanks so much chochotte. All noted!

Will be staying at the Blythswood Hotel so the cocktail recommendation sounds perfect. One each day won't hurt!

Glad to hear about the cabs. I was wondering how expensive it would be to get to all the great places that have been recommended.

Glasgow for NYC foodie?

Thanks much crispysaltysweet. Looking forward to being in Glasgow. I enjoy great Indian food in new york city but there is a lot to be said for Indian food across the ocean. Many consider the quality better in the UK

NYC foodie in London needs recs

Thanks Zuriga1. I have a friend who was there recently and enjoyed it.
I'm looking forward to Masters!

NYC foodie in London needs recs

Thanks for your very helpful reply, JFores.

Perhaps we should do Indian ZIng and Quilon for our Indian dinners. Had a friend who went to Dishoom and liked it a lot but it's probably better for a snack or quick stop only.

Our last lunch is on our last full day so we can travel. Our departure from LHR is the next day (Saturday) around noon so no food adventures that morning sadly!

I love great Lebanese food and we certainly don't get much of that in NYC. We could do Chez Marcelle on Friday then.

Any great food shoppping places you recommend? I'm obsessed with cheese so other than the Neel's Yard stop in Borough Market, I'm open.

Thanks again!

NYC foodie in London needs recs

Thanks greedygirl. It's very helpful to get a sense of "worth travelling for" with all these places. There are some really great Indian dives here in NYC and a few are worth the journey while others are great if you are nearby.

Unfortunately we're not in London on a weekend. We leave Saturday aroundnoon.

Would love to do some great middle eastern for one lunch and will look up both that you have suggested.

thanks

NYC hound in Lisbon and Evora

Thanks so much Vinhotinto for these great recommendations.

Regarding Evora, we do have a car and would love to do the local wineries on our own. So any thoughts and recommendations you have would be great. Much appreciated!

In reference to Lisbon, many thanks for the additional places. I'll be sure to visit their websites to get a sense of each place. As you know, we have a lot of totally fancy places here in NYC but only some of them boast amazing food AND a posh look. So, if you had only a couple of meals in Lisbon where would you go among all the upscale places? For us the food is paramount.

Thanks so much and btw, your steak and the wine last night made we want to be there already!

NYC hound in Lisbon and Evora

Hi

We're NYC hounds off to Portugal in a couple of weeks. We'll be in Lisbon for 3 nights at the Hotel Britania and in Evora at the Albergaia do Calvario for another 3. We're BIG foodies and will travel far for amazing food.

I've scoured the board and read a lot of the amazing suggestions made by Vinhotinto75, Nyleve and others. Thanks so much! Now its all about confirming and getting opinions so we don't miss any amazing food places.

Lisbon (3 dinners, 3 lunches)
-Bonjardim (lunch)
-O Ponto Final (lunch?)
-Cervejaria Ramiro (dinner)
-Cervejaira e Marisqueira Barcabela (dinner?)
-Churasco de Graca (dinner?)
-???? where else? Anything to replace?

*Also confeitaria de belem for nata and the vini portugal for wine tasting.

Evora (3 dinners, 2 lunches)
-Restaurant Don Joaquim
-Botequim de Mouraria
-???? where else?

In addition to advice on where to eat in the two places above, are there stops on the way to Evora we MUST go to for food and also, any specialty food stores we should visit in these areas?

Thank you all in advance,
