slow baked beans with kale?
Ditto. I made it with baby lima beans and it was not in any way creamy or syrupy. I used a dutch oven and it took about twice as long to cook as the recipe said. Big disappointment. I won't be making it again.
Special occasion restaurant around Coal Harbour/downtown Vancouver
Ooooh Lotus, that is sad. Pallino isn't bad for a chain restaurant, but you can do so much better than that in Seattle. One of the hottest places in the city right now is Captiol Hill, which used to be primarily a bastion of cheap ethnic restaurants and not much else. A lot of more upscale, interesting restaurants have opened there over the past few years. There's no shortage of good spots to check out.
I have those same glasses! Love them.

Chowhounds, thank you very much! This is super helpful. I'd been wondering about new spots in Gastown and a few of those sound great, just what my husband and I might like. We'll be there for at least a couple of nights, so maybe we can check out one or two of the trendier places sans parents. Adesso sounds very promising, foodwise, though I'm guessing my parents would also be just as happy with Cardero's. I figured the Teahouse might not be so good anymore. I'd completely forgotten about Bishop's. Good to know it's still there and still good. Thanks all for your suggestions. And LotusRapper, feel free to ping me about Seattle options - though you can probably find a ton of info on the Northwest board as well. Seattle's a pretty good food city.
Special occasion restaurant around Coal Harbour/downtown Vancouver
My husband and I are coming to Vancouver by boat in August to repeat our wedding vows and do some sailing. I'm from Vancouver but haven't been there in a very long time, and this trip will be nostalgic and special for me.
We'll be staying at the marina in Coal Harbour, so I'd like to find somewhere a short drive or cab ride from there to go for dinner with my family and a few friends. Could be anywhere downtown, Robson, Gastown, West End.
I'm going to stay away from sushi/Japanese, since my parents aren't overly adventurous eaters. Something quintessentially west coast would be good, as would Italian, seafood, maybe French, steak house, bistro, etc. Cozy and friendly is more important that the latest, trendiest place or super inventive food. Old school is good. I'm hoping entrees will cost around $20 to $25, but more isn't necessarily a dealbreaker.
Someone mentioned Adesso Bistro in another thread and that sounds like a possibility. Since it's going to be summer, it would be great to be somewhere with a nice view, though that's not critical (we'll be on our boat, getting plenty of good views!) Has anyone been to Cardero's? I checked Yelp and the reviews seemed very mixed (though Yelp reviews often seem to be that way). Or the Teahouse in Stanley Park?
What about Joe Forte's? Overrated? Riding on its reputation?
And if anyone has recommendations for good watering holes after we send the parents on their way, feel free to pass those along as well! We like pubs, dives, holes in the wall....
Thanks in advance! And if any of you Chows are coming to Seattle, I'd be happy to make recommendations.

Winthrop, WA recommendations?
Check out the Twisp River Pub. It's in Twisp, about a 10 minute drive from Winthrop, and is a kid-friendly joint (has a kids menu):

Pub or restaurant near waterfront in Edmonds, Tacoma, Des Moines, Olympia...?
Good info, yummers - thank you! We weren't on a boat yesterday, but will be visiting these places by boat in the future, so the info is much appreciated. I do love cooking on a boat, especially seafood. There's nothing quite like sitting down in the cockpit somewhere beautiful in the Northwest, with a fresh, homemade seafood dinner. Heaven!
We ended up going to Arnies in Edmonds. We were lured by the view and the beautiful, sunny day. The food was okay... they were generous with the portions of seafood (we all had seafood), but overall it was unremarkable and a little pricey for lunch.
GIrl's Night Out! (Belltown SEA)
Black Bottle is wonderful. The food is good, it's reasonably priced and it's a nice atmosphere. Zoe is very good, though pricey. Palace Kitchen is great and you definitely won't be too loud there!
Looking for the ultimate eating in Seattle
I haven't eaten at Elemental, but a discerning foodie friend whose opinion I trust ate there a week ago and said the service was so bad she'd never go back. Tilth is wonderful and very Northwest. Don't miss Salumi, whatever you do!
If you're in the Market, I'd recommend having a drink at Zig Zag (nicer place) or for a more divey experience, head to the bar at the back of the Athenian Inn. It's in the Market building, I think right next door to Powell's. It's very authentic and will give you a taste of the old school Market flavor.
If it's a nice day and you want to grab takeout and sit outdoors, Michou, on Western Avenue across from the main Market building, is wonderful - it's takeout only and they have an amazing, very well-priced selection of inventive sandwiches (grilled if you want), all kinds of salads (from roasted veggie salads to pasta salads, green salads, etc.) to other dishes. I don't think anything is more than around $7. It's in the same block as the original Starbucks and is definitely worth a visit if you're looking to get quick takeout in the Market area.
I think one thing Seattle has that New York (I used to live there) definitely doesn't are wonderful happy hours with great food menus and excellent prices. If you're downtown, I'd try the happy hour at Brasa on 3rd Avenue (HH menu items such as paella, steak sandwich, mussels, etc; it's romantic and cozy), Umi Sake House on 1st Avenue (great sushi HH menu), Il Bistro (next to the market building; look for the sidewalk that slopes downward, to the left of the brass pig at the market entrance - the lounge there is beautiful, dark and cozy, with a terrific HH menu)...
Oh! I just thought of another one. Maximillien in the Market is a well-kept secret and has a terrific happy hour and probably the best deck with views of Elliott Bay anywhere in that area. It's a little hard to find - it's down a hallway to the left of the fish-throwing place. Look for Market Spice, the tea and spice place, and head down the hallway right in front of it. It's a great place.
If you're on a budget, you could eat at HH very reasonably (and well) for a few of the nights you're here and splurge somewhere nice the other nights.
Enjoy!

Thanks very much! I hadn't heard of the Budd Bay Cafe; it sounds like it would fit the bill perfectly.
Pub or restaurant near waterfront in Edmonds, Tacoma, Des Moines, Olympia...?
Hi Chowhounds,
I need to find a pub or restaurant that's within walking distance of a marina in Edmonds, Tacoma, Des Moines or pretty much anywhere within a short drive from Seattle. It just needs to be open for lunch and walkable from a marina.
I'd appreciate any suggestions you might have. Thanks in advance!!
Fun bar/restaurant near Hotel Carlton?
Going to SF this weekend and don't know the city at all. We're staying at Hotel Carlton, on Sutter Street, which appears to be about equidistant from Nob Hill and Union Square. We'd like to go to a nice but not stuffy bar or restaurant somewhere near where we're staying (if possible). Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance!
Lunch in Downtown Seattle
A well-kept secret is the cafeteria on the 10th floor of the Nordstrom headquarters building, on 7th between Stewart and Olive. It's mostly for Nordstrom employees and for a while they weren't allowing anyone who didn't work in the building (which has other companies as well) to eat there, but last time I went it was fine. They have a great self-serve salad bar that always has roasted veggies (sometimes brussels sprouts, sometimes cauliflower) and good homemade dressings. They also have two hot entrees daily, a budget one and a slightly more expensive one, and a self-serve sandwich bar. The prices are really good.
Hate to mention the Westlake food court again, but if you order from the Thai place, rather than getting the pre-made combo dishes, it's really good. I like their sauteed veggies with ginger.
There's also Habesha, on 10th near Minor - a bit of a hike from Nordstrom, but not too far. It's Ethiopian and I think they have a lunch buffet.
And finally, Blue Water Taco Grill. They make the best Mexican fast food I've had outside of Mexico. They use fresh cilantro and make their own salsas. There's one in Union Square.
Nice dinner place in Port Townsend?
I've been to Wild Coho and will probably default to there if I can't find something equally good, but I'd love suggestions for a place to go for a nice (birthday, my 40th, ugh!) dinner. I'd like to find something with good seafood, if possible.
Thanks in advance for any recommendations!
crabcakes from chesapeake crab co. at ballard seafood fest
What a shame that you had such a bad experience, which would have annoyed me too. I went for the first time this year and was really impressed by the variety of food available. My husband and I went to the Cajun place - I had blackened salmon with a caesar salad and he had the blackened salmon burger, which had some kind of delicious sauce on it (maybe chipotle mayo; can't remember). Very tasty. I hope you aren't too turned off by your experience to go next year!
What's the most common type of ethnic food on the Eastside?
The Eastside of the Puget Sound region - Bellevue, Redmond, Bothell, etc.
What's the most common type of ethnic food on the Eastside?
By that I mean what's the highest concentration of ethnic food available on the Eastside - Indian? Mexican? Asian? - and in what community(ies)?
Looking for best inexpensive Indian food in Seattle
India Bistro is very tasty. The food is never overly oily, the service is good and the prices are great. They have a fantastic lunch buffet every day but Sunday.
Best Mexican in Ballard/Fremont?
FD, you might try Esperanza, which is right at the top of the stairs in Golden Gardens Park - it's on 32nd; I think the cross-street is 82? I haven't eaten there but have heard from trusty sources that it's really good.
Good lunch/interview place near Pike Place Market
I'm taking a prospective new boss out for lunch and am having trouble coming up with the right place. It should be not too far from the market and be neither too casual nor too stuffy (don't want it to look like I'm trying too hard). She doesn't eat meat, so it has to have a few veggie options. Any suggestions would be appreciated - thanks!
