chelsea...visiting NYC from Toronto

As you are staying in Chelsea, try La Taza De Oro on 15St and 8th for Spanish/Puerto Rican fare. Nothing fancy, but hearty, inexpensive and reliable. For bagels, try Murray's on 23rd St and 8th Ave or Brooklyn Bagels on 8th between 24th and 25th Sts. Have fun!

Steakhouse with best lobster?

I've had both lobster and steak at the Palm on at least a dozen occasions over the years. Both were delicious. Steaks are large, and in conjunction with an appetizer and bread, I always had leftovers.

Manhattan Fruit Exchange

MFE is my neighborhood spot. Possibly the lowest prices in downtown Manhattan. The variety and selection is pretty great. The fruit can be hit-or-miss, but the produce is always good. BTW - It's cash only!

I wish that Chelsea Fruit Exchange would start taking credit cards!

keens steakhouse recommendations

nikklos is right on about the mutton chop, or saddle of lamb. My order of preference is: (1) mutton chop; (2) prime rib; and (3) porterhouse. All are excellent, but the mutton is pretty unique to Keens. As far as portion sizes, I generally leave with enough leftovers for a second meal. Enjoy!

The pasta is generally good, too.

You can get a salad anywhere, any time... if you're from out of town, you can't get Amy's Bread, Ronnybrook Dairy, The Fat Witch, Buon Italia, Hale & Hearty Soups, Chelsea Thai, Eleni's, etc... so readily. Indulge yourself... at least one or twice. Then you can get your salad at Manhattan Fruit Exchange :)

Wolfgang's Steak- Park Ave or Greenwich?

To meinNYC:

That's why I prefer downtown. The noise level is manageable, it's spacious, and they usuallly seat you on time.

Wolfgang's Steak- Park Ave or Greenwich?

Downtown. Taboo is right, it's much larger. Also, I found the vibe better and more relaxed.

Best steakhouse for a birthday dinner?

fldhkybnva - if you are set on Luger's, you could always try to walk in at the beginning or end of dinner. You might be lucky and score a table. You could also go for Saturday lunch. I think that they open at noon and from my experience, they don't start to fill up until close to one. You'd still probably want a lunch reservation, though. Otherwise, I stand by Keen's.

Best steakhouse for a birthday dinner?

Keen's. Hand's down. IMHO, Keen's is one of the best in NYC. The "mutton chop" (saddle of lamb) and king cut prime rib are great and huge. The sides are ok and the salads are excellent. Much more low key than Luger's and they accept credit cards.

Lunch - Battery Park, Pastrami Midtown Please Help

I highly recommend Keens. It's a great NY institution and more laid back than other steak houses. I've really enjoyed their "mutton" chop (really saddle of lamb), the porterhouse and the prime rib. Also, not too far from Century 21 is a take out/eat in spot called the Amish Market. It is located at 53 Park Row. Good salads, hot food bar, sandwiches, etc. www.amishfinefood.com. Whole Foods just opened at 270 Greenwich Street. Great if you want to eat outdoors in Battery Park City.

IMHO, I would skip John's and Gray's. But that's just me.

Try the vegetarian options at Burritoville. I like the megasoy. They provide free chips and a variety of salsas if you eat in.

Keen's or Peter Luger's?

Although this is not a Wolfgang's thread, I totally agree that they have the most consistent steaks. I've only been to the downtown branch and I find it much more comfortable than Peter Luger's.

Keen's or Peter Luger's?

IMHO you would be well fed at either. Many on this board will say Luger's is better than Keen's, but I disagree. The last few times I went to Keen's the porterhouse was easily as good as Luger's, if not better. Keen's takes plastic. Keen's is in Manhattan. Keen's is within walking distance from my house, and from Midtown. You could always go to Keen's for dinner and Luger's for lunch the next day. The hamburgers are great, as is the thick-sliced bacon. Enjoy!

Keen's Mutton Chops vs. Luger's steak

ESNY, I agree with you about Luger's but not Wolfgang's. I've only been to the downtown Wolfgang's, but every time the steak has been superior to my last visits to Luger's. And it is in Manhattan. And they take credit cards.

Keen's Mutton Chops vs. Luger's steak

I recently had a porterhouse at Keens. It surpassed the porterhouse that I had on my last two (at least) visits to Luger's. I also enjoy Keen's prime rib and "mutton chop" or saddle of lamb as well as the atmosphere: low-key and very good service.

A truly bizarre restaurant experience at Chez le Chef

Sorry about your experience. However, to make a broad statement, it appears that the quality and service of NYC restaurants has been in a rapid decline. Twice in the past week I received subpar service and did not get the dish as I ordered. I didn't complain either time, so shame on me. I'd like to think that I will speak up in the future.

Chinatown to Chelsea Market-how far?

I agree with the walking suggestion. It's still possible to get some of the flavor of the neighborhoods on the way to Chelsea Market. Walk down Sullivan or Thompson. There are still some vestiges of the old Village. Also, walking is the environmentally friendly thing to do!

Carnegie Deli or Katz's?

Katz's. Carnegie Deli is geared for tourists. Just gander at the line outside. CD is not interested in repeat customers. The food and service make that clear. Also, when you're done at Katz's. you can take a quick walk to Russ & Daughters, Economy Candy and Kossar's.

I'm assuming that this is old new for most, but Starbucks bought the company that makes the Clover... http://www.starbucks.com/aboutus/pres...

Any predictions as to when the Clover-made espresso will start to taste burnt and watery?

How is Angelica Kitchen in E. Village?

I really enjoy Angelica Kitchen. IMHO it is the best veggie spot in Manhattan. Everything always tastes clean and fresh. The dragon bowl and cornbread are great. I far prefer AK to Zen Palate, where everything is greasy and heavy.
