Buck's Fishing & Camping
I don't live far from Bucks and I've tried it twice. I side with the postings that say they don't get it. It's ok, but hardly worth a special trip. Last time I ate there I had the grilled bronzino and it was ok - a bit dried out and not very interesting. Not a place, in my opinion, you have to put on your 'must try' list.
Need recs for dinner - quickly - in Cambridge
Hi all -
DC hound here looking for a good dinner. I had a great dinner at the Franklin Cafe last night and looking for similarly interesting food over here in Cambridge tonight. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Places near the Jammin' Java on Maple in Vienna
Hi all -
Maryland hound here crossing the river to see some awesome rock and roll at Jammin' Java tonight ... need a good place to eat first. I prefer ethnic non-chain type places.. Indian, Asian, etc..
Or a great burger works too!
Any recs? (BTW - I tried searching the archive but it seems to kick sand in my face w/ errors on this new site...)
Thanks
Addie's- Rockville
If they are 'meat and potatoes types then they should order the ribeye. Last time I had it there I thought it was awesome. However, regardless of what they order, I can't imagine them getting a 'bad' meal at Addies. Oh - and I always order the PEI mussels when I go to Addies - they are fresh, grit-free, and cooked perfectly. I don't know about others on the list, but I don't think of Addie's as formal - it's great food in a slightly funky location ... but I don't consider it a formal restaurant.
Lunch in Bethesda for 12?
I doubt you could hit Jaleo for 10-12 bucks per person. What about Raku? The Bento Box or sushi are great deals.
Five Guys vs. Elevation vs. Cheeburger Cheeburger
I agree -the shakes at Elevation are awesome. However, I did like the fries too - I thought they were the best fries I've had in a long time. As with anything though, I probably got the product in my hand at the opportune time. They were hot and seasoned and the olive oil added just enough flavor - but they were still fries. Unfortunately, the buger was dry and tasteless. To be fair, I've had dry and tasteless at 5 Guys and I've had juicy and wonderful burgers at 5 Guys too. In a perfect world they would replicate the same product time and time again so you would know exactly what you're getting.
Business Dinner in Downtown Chicago
Reporting back about Monday night's dinner. We went to Allen's Cafe. It was good - but not special. The service was better than the food. Out waiter (doubling as the bar tender on this slow night) took very good care of us. The ravioli (stuffed with short ribs) were tasty, but there was nothing special about the flavor. They could have used something to give them a bright note - as they were they seemed heavy. I also ordered the elk based on the waiter's suggestion. The elk was over cooked. I ordered it med-rare and asked them to error on the rare side if they aren't going to hit med-rare just right. I had three pieces of elk on my plate and one was what looked like the end cut of a tenderloin. That piece was beyond medium even. The other two were closer to med-well than med-rare. Elk is so lean it really can't take that much cooking w/out drying out. The wines by the glass were tastey. Like I said, overall it was good - but not special. I'd go back again just to try a few other dishes.
St. Andre Cheese
I love Cowgirl Creamery's Red Hawk -
Thanks all for the words of knowledge. It all makes perfect sense now.
St. Andre Cheese
Hi all -
Didn't know where else to turn to ask this. I've googled but no luck. I purchased a small container of St. Andre Cheese. It has a white washed rind like Brie but there is a very fine white fuzz on it too... is that normal? it wipes right off... but I don't want to make guests sick of course. Words of wisdom?
Thanks
Business Dinner in Downtown Chicago
I've a client dinner this upcoming Monday and have offered Allen's or Blackbird as a choice -I will definitely report back on how it went. Thanks for the suggestions. I trust a hound over a concierge anyday. : )
Wegmans Plans to Open Store in Columbia
For what it is worth - Wegman's won the Food TV award for regional grocery chains. I think it beat Harris Teeter and Trader Joe's. I grew up in central NY where Wegman's is a religion, not a store. I can't tell you how many e-mails or calls from home have at least one scentence that starts with "I was in Wegman's and I...." I hope they maintain the quality and brand as they expand.
BLT STEAK
I took a client to lunch there about two weeks ago. Not a good choice. Steaks came out with the little plastic cows in them that said "rare" and "med rare" - come on... can you say "self service food line at Ponderosa?" My steak was delicious though. At least that half you could eat. The other half was fat lines and tendon or something you just couldn't chew enough. I think I just got a bad steak. Happens. However, shouldn't happen at their prices and when the waiter sees a plate with what looks like a steak carved up with a chainsaw left on a diner's plate, he/she might want to at least ask if everything was ok. Won't be back.
Yin Yankee in Bethesda - anyone been?
What timing. I was at a function the other day w/ some other foodies and somehow Yin Yankee came up. I think the jist of the conversation was that we're getting tired of what Bethesda has to offer and we're hoping something new and unique comes along. Those in the group that tried Yin Yankee basically said it still hasn't gotten it right. Overly eager servers and mall food court level food. I've not been back since the first time I tried it so this is based on what some foodies who recently visited had to say.
Anything Good in RFK?
I have season tix. In response ot your question - as far as I can tell - no. As baconjen said, the sausage and peppers are the best bet I've seen so far - and they are sketchy. I think it's called Dominicks. Be sure you stand in the line where they take them right off the flat top for you. Otherwise, they are cold.
Meiwah? Any Good? Other Suggestions?
We (the family and I) eat at the Chevy Chase Meiwah about twice a month. I usually order the squid w/ spicy salt and steamed egg plant w/ garlic sauce (sometimes on the side because they can be heavy handed) - always awesome. If you want, you can get brown rice w/ your dish instead of white of fried. My girls love the sesame chicken - and the pieces of chicken are actually identifiable as chicken versus chicken-like meat stuffs. Overall it's nothing ultra-stellar, but it is certainly a step up from the usual Chinese you'll find around here.
Yin Yankee in Bethesda - anyone been?
I didn't see this until after I posted my reply below. We had the crab 'roll' too and thought it was ok. The orange sauce they put on it was too thick and covered the taste of alll the fresh herbs in the roll though. I agree - bummer. You're right - Raku is a better lunch choice for sure.
Yin Yankee in Bethesda - anyone been?
My wife and I went last night for dinner. I don't think I need to go back anytime soon. It may just be that it's not my kind of place though .. It was definitely loud and reminded me a bit of Tara Thai as far as the general look and feel. The server was great. The hostess tried to seat us right next to a table with a lone diner rather than picking any of the other 20 open tables. We moved ourselves. The food was fine - but the sauces were very heavy and applied liberally. Maybe it is a good lunch spot - though pricey for lunch.
Yin Yankee in Bethesda - anyone been?
A carryout fee? Oh my. Rude. If they don't want to 'do' carryout, they should just say they don't do carryout...
Yin Yankee in Bethesda - anyone been?
Anyone been to the Yin Yankee in Bethesda yet? Or to the one in Annaoplis? Worth a visit?
I have never heard of it and not sure if it's a chain or mini-chain, but am always looking for something new.
Thanks -
Disappointing Meal at David Craig, Bethesda
We ate at David Craigs not to long ago and had a good experience also. We were a party of 12 which I think is always a challenge. One of my neighbors ordered the beef cheeks tht were awesome. I ordered the pasta also and found it better than good, but I didn't cry eating it either. I suspect that with that party size getting everyone's dish to the 'make you cry' stage is hard enough - without taking in to account the electricity went out during the middle of appitizers (raining hard out). Was it pricey - yes, but so is Blacks and other unique Bethesda restaurants. I agree with Pappy that considering it's in Bethesda which is littered with too many chain and mini-chains - it's worth checking out again and the occassional need to pay higher prices than the local Rock Bottom. Our service was fine and Chef even came out of the kitchen to see how things were going at one point.
dining suggestions while in d.c.
If you order well - pastas, grilled meats, fish, at Sesto Senso, you can get a tasty meal. Sometimes their risotto is spot on, others times not so much. If Osso Bucco is the special, order it. Also, I think their pizza is very good.
Off the beaten path near the Verizon Center
Hi all -
Any suggestions for something off the beaten path near the Verizon Center. I imagine all the usual places will be packed before a concert/event so I was looking for something that you wouldn't know about unless someone told you it was there - and is great food too of course.
Thanks -
Best Pizza in DC?
Amen to that. It's a personal taste. I like 2 Amy's, Mia's (new in Bethesda) - though they could use some customer service training, Paridiso, Comet Ping Pong, CP Bar and Grill (in Cleveland Park), Sesto Senso (same owners as CP so it's no surprise if you like one you'll like the other), and I haven't been to a Lido Pizza that impressed me at all - seemed like a Jerry's experience to me.
Best Burger in DC area
From the 'mileage may vary' files ... I tried these and didn't see what the big deal was. They had little flavor and were dry.
rockville town center Superfresh grocery store
What? No Wegmans? Curses! Back home Wegmans is a religion.
What happened to Whatsa Bagel?
There is a Cosi's right around the corner from Bethesda Bagel. I doubt they are moving to a smaller space or opening a second space. I agree with Elyssa - we don't need it.
Anyone been to Comet Ping Pong?
No, I don't work at Comet.
No, I don't know anyone that does.
No, I don't have a piece of the pie (sorry, had to do it).
However, I don't understand all the bad press in these postings. I've been to Comet at least six or seven times since it opened and had nothing but good service, great pizza, and a good time.
Are my standards too low? I don't think so. I agree that the pizzas are small for the price. I guess if you want a large pizza for $10 you should order Domino's or Pizza Hut. That's their market. Pizza isn't cheap at any of the good pizza joints in the DC area.
I've never been to New Haven Conn. So I don't know what New Haven pizza is supposed to be like. However, I've spent time in Italy and I do know what pizza is supposed to be like. Comet does too.
