Apple picking suggestions please?

we went to berryview farms this past weekend; it's part of the downey farms family. there's a tractor to take you out to the orchard. we picked ginger golds which were quite tasty. different varieties will be available as the season progresses. across the street, downey's has a market, a petting zoo, and a huge kid's play area (they charge admission).

my toddler loved the tractor and picking apples so we did not do the activities at downey's this time around.

Etobicoke sushi - takeout

hi kingsway,

thanks for the tip. i too find momiji expensive ... and after our last take-out order, it's painful to pay for bland and loose rolls!

i'm not sure what happened ... maybe it was an off-night. we ordered from momiji this weekend and the rice was BLAND and the rolls were LOOSE. everything was literally falling out. totally disappointing!

Etobicoke sushi - takeout

Hey Hounds,

Hoping you can recommend a decent place for take out sushi in Etobicoke. Clean/fresh, decent.

I work in North York and usually pick sushi up from Taro's but that's just too far of a trek on the weekend.

TIA!

Breville smart oven tips/tricks?

in a moment of absolute desperation (me - stuck at home with 2 month old kiddo who wouldn't sleep anywhere but ON me and tired of re-heating leftovers in microwave for every dinner), i bought a BSO over two years ago and it's been awesome! it was a total "throw money at the problem and hope it goes away" kind of moment but we don't regret it at all. thankfully, my almost 3-year old is an amazing sleeper and is quite fond of the 'mini-oven' as we bake little things often and the BSO is way easier for him to use (with serious supervision) than the regular oven. i also love that the BSO doesn't heat up the kitchen like the regular oven does.

i did not know about this second shelf ... i will look into it! thanks.

the one thing i did buy was a 'cheappie' bamboo cutting board to put on top of the oven so i could store stuff without it melting. i think breville makes a BSO-specific board for this purpose but it costs way more $$.

i bought four aluminum 1/4 sheet pans (or maybe they're 1/8?) and they all fit perfectly in the BSO.

we make anything and everything in it ... the guy at the store said he literally stopped using his regular oven when he bought his own BSO. we still use our big oven but the BSO is honestly one of my favourite kitchen purchases.

Your favourite grocery store in GTA (chain or otherwise?)

i'm probably less than 10 mins from starsky and am embarrassed to admit that i've never been. you've inspired me to make a trip. what do you buy there?

Good Mochi in Toronto?

i'll echo notoroious PIG ... homemade mochi is pretty hard to find in toronto. every once in a while, i've found what looks to be homemade stuff @ sandown in etobicoke. but it's the traditional red bean variety.

i've made mochi at home ... it's sticky but pretty easy/straightforward. so there's always that option.

Instant Breakfast Cereal

there's a ton of different threads in the home cooking board about all the various oatmeal options.

another option you can consider (if you're looking into the homemade thing) ... baked oatmeal. make it at home, bring it to work, nuke ... voila!

Instant Breakfast Cereal

hey millygirl,

do you have access to a microwave? could you make/bring stuff from home? i find the instant stuff to be pretty revolting! but homemade is delish and also keeps well.

Please help me plan the ultimate 3-day dining experience in Toronto. Specifics within:

what a nice idea!

we took my MIL to 360 for her 65th birthday (her request). the food and service were mediocre. HOWEVER, more importantly, my MIL got dizzy from the movement. sooooo... not sure you'd want to take your mom there.

i concur with the other hounds ... canoe is lovely. tell them what your plans are when you book and the staff really go out of their way to make you feel special.

and please don't take your mom to sultan's tent! ick.

i find the cara cara oranges at costco to be great when it's EARLY in the season (i.e. when they first come out). the longer the season goes on, the worse they get. probably a sign that i shouldn't be eating a cara cara orange in may! :)
