First time to Nopa [San Francisco]

I promise to report back. Got a 7:30 rez for a Saturday end of month and based on the reviews/Saturday night expect to wait. But because I'm with 2 beautiful 20-somethings I figure hanging at the bar will be a fun intro for them to their new neighborhood.

Asked for a booth d'stairs and was told 'that'll be no problem' whereas so many restos respond that they 'can't promise anything' when you request a certain location. Very friendly service while making my rez. I'll let you know how it goes.

First time to Nopa [San Francisco]

Thank you. We'll be with our daughter and her roommate so they might prefer the action downstairs. Appreciate the advice.

First time to Nopa [San Francisco]

Our daughter has had the good sense to move into an apt across the street from Nopa and will be making dinner reservations (nothing on Open Table but hopefully can manage on the phone) for end of the month when we visit. Not having been, anything we should request when booking from a location-in-the-restaurant perspective? Thanks!

Henna cake - Pasadena

OMG this baker is fantastic. Her cookies are works of art. Do you know where she's located? I live in Pasadena and haven't seen work this delicate. I know I'll use her sometime so thank you for the referral.

Henna cake - Pasadena

It cut just fine. Used a fondant icing so that might have helped have a firm foundation.

I love these cookies. Thank you. I'm sort of obsessed with the whole Bollywood thing so I'll definitely use again and order these.

Henna cake - Pasadena

Hopefully my pic will show up correctly. It wasn't exactly what I expected. I showed the head baker the pic above in which the 'henna' design is piped freehand. Another baker did the cake and as she didn't have the benefit of the pic I assume she was told to do an 'Indian design.' They applied some pre-made molds and piped some gold. It was very pretty and served my purpose so it was fine.

And it was delicious....toasted almond - served 10 - $50.

I'd use Anna Cake House (Washington Blvd, Pasadena) again, but I'd leave behind pix and make sure the person I spoke with is the person doing the baking. They were all very sweet.

Marinating question

Thanks so much. Will do.

Marinating question

I'm doing Indian style beef kabobs with a thick, spicy sauce. The recipe says marinate the steak 20 mins before placing on a skewer.

I like to do all my prep ahead of time, but I assume I need to marinate immediately before cooking rather than earlier in the day and wiping the marinade off.

You also need to soak the bamboo skewers so I assume I need to also do this right before threading/cooking so the skewers don't dry out and flame up. Thanks so much for your advice.

Henna cake - Pasadena

Thanks for the suggestion. EuroPane said no - and they don't do fondant which is sort of essential for a cake like this - but Lena at Anna's Cakes on Washington Blvd said she could. I pick it up tomorrow so I'll report in.

Percentages for 'Soul of a Nation'

I'm answering my own question re a garnish - a lime wedge makes it reflect the color of the flag. Are anyone else's limes really dry? I just bought a bag from Costco for cooking and they're pretty dry and bitter.

Percentages for 'Soul of a Nation'

I'm doing an Indian dinner and wanted to make a themed cocktail called 'Soul of a Nation' that I found online. I wouldn't say it's particularly Indian but it's color mimics the Indian flag.

Ingredients are listed as mango puree, peach schnapps and champagne but I can't find any proportions. I have some high quality mango juice I was going to sub for the puree since I have the juice. I think it'll be like a mango mimosa. Any idea how much schnapps to add? And what sort of garnish might be pretty?

Thanks so much.

Henna cake - Pasadena

I'm doing an Indian-themed dinner party and am looking for a bakery in Pasadena who could execute a 'henna' cake. I don't know if the attached pic will work but it's a fondant-covered cake with henna-like icing designs. My usual baker is too busy. Thanks!

Lunch between Pasadena & Riverside?

Thank you everyone for the great advice. I'll head to Eureka in Claremont as it sounds perfect for my
college-aged niece.

I do go to the Dal Rae sometimes as Pico Rivera is midway for a friend in Long Beach. It's a step back in time! Men in suits drinking martinis at lunch. A reliable meal and attentive service. Thank you again.

Love the place but we're trying to find a midway point.

Lunch between Pasadena & Riverside?

Would like to take my niece to a pretty place with a nice ambiance between our homes for a giant salad and glass of wine. I checked out the Golden Spur in Glendora, but would rather not go the nostalgia route. Any ideas? Thanks!

Seating at Forage?

I need a low-key biz lunch place in Silverlake - cool client so nothing fussy and was thinking Forage but do they have seating for 2? I read they have one long table which won't work. We've been to Cafe Stella so would love something new.

Food + morgue [San Francisco]

I know, I know. Not two words you often hear together!! Am taking our Auntie Mame to San Fran and all the things she wants to do last happened in the 1970's and most places are closed.

Can you help me figure this out? She says there was a restaurant she liked 'down by the morgue' (?!?!) but doesn't remember the name or the cuisine.

I Googled and there seems to be a restaurant currently housed in a funeral home, but that's not it. At least I thought this post would be good for a laugh.

Fireworks + dinner [San Francisco]

Thanks for your replies. I've been persuaded that July 4th weekend for a woman with a walker who's a bit shaky is sort of doomed so I'm switching our visit to a different weekend.

Fireworks + dinner [San Francisco]

We're visiting San Francisco July 4 with my elderly aunt from NYC and I wondered if there might be a nice restaurant where we could also see the fireworks? Even a place with less amazing food, but a rooftop view would be okay. Ditto across the bridge.

She uses a walker so I'm hoping for a place where we could see the fireworks from the table rather than her fighting the crowds to see fireworks after dinner. I know this is a tall order, but thanks.

Valentines Dinner

This isn't a food related comment, but I'll just say that in an age when the young people I know say 'dating is dead' you seem to be a guy who knows how to treat a young lady and hope you both have the BEST time!

Happy hour at The Grove

I'm meeting a biz associate at The Grove for a glass of wine because it's convenient for them. Recs please?

Of course I love the Farmer's Market but that might not be appropriate. Thanks.

Approve/improve my Christmas cocktail ideas, please

Thanks so much for the suggestions, Dan. I have all the ingredients for Manhattans and that's so retro-chic right now. Plus I have plenty of nice wine and champagne. Happy New Year and cheers.

Approve/improve my Christmas cocktail ideas, please

I'd like to offer 2 cocktails to lure my wine drinking friends away from the grape but I'm not a super experienced mixologist. I have a doz friends coming so the recipes need to be pretty simple but festive.

For one I thought I'd go with dark rum, spiced cider, pineapple juice and a slice of orange as a garnish. For the second vodka, raspberry puree, a splash of club soda (or 7-up?) for fizz and a skewer of raspberries as garnish. I've tested and they both are quite good.

I have a well-stocked bar and bitters, Rose's, etc. if you think I could improve upon the above without getting too complicated. Thank you!

Perrier-Jouet

Thanks so much. I have a back-up ready.

When we were on our honeymoon at Stonepine in Carmel, CA many years ago my husband proudly brought a bottle of Dom he'd been saving for what turned out to be way too long. We still laugh about that. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
