Star-themed hors d'oeuvres

Me neither but I saw in a pic online! They pinched the finished dumpling toward the center so it formed a star. All my ideas are stolen!

Star-themed hors d'oeuvres

I'm hosting a small elegant cocktail party for a charity that will set in an observatory and I'd like to do some easy2eat star-themed appetizers that will be clever not corny. Will be serving champagne (obviously) The event will be outside, in SoCal, in mid-October and am intending to do food that can be pre-prepped. Here are some ideas I have and would welcome others. Thank you in advance!

Spicy tuna sushi in a spoon topped with a slice of cucumber cut into a star
Butternut squash soup in a small cup topped with star-shaped pastry
Cheese stars (cheese/butter/flour cut into star shapes)
Dumplings shaped into stars

Cooking salmon

Thank you both very much! I'll do exactly as you suggest.

Cooking salmon

I've only grilled salmon but attached is a NYT recipe for Salmon with Anchovy Butter that calls for starting the salmon on a pan and finishing in the oven and I'm nervous! The salmon in the pic are much thicker than mine which is a slab of wild salmon. Should I cut the cooking time in half? Or I can just do on the grill as per usual and spoon the anchovy butter on top.

http://cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/10...

Since we're talking salmon, is there any way to avoid the white globs (I assume fat) which sometimes forms on the top of salmon when I grill? Thanks so much!

Chocolate layer cake Pasadena

Thanks for all the great ideas. I haven't tried Lark but have wanted to so maybe there. And I've found Patticakes inconsistent myself, but that's another good idea.

I love Nicole's but you're right - I want something more classic.

Happy weekend and appreciate the help.

Chocolate layer cake Pasadena

I used to order my b'day cakes at Victor Bene's at Gelson's in Pasadena but they're gone. I swear by Europane for pastries, but I've never ordered a cake there. Need a basic chocolate cake.....is this the best option?

Meeting on Wilshire?

I've been to Guelaguetza for dinner but would never have thought for b'fast. Thanks so much. That's perfect.

Meeting on Wilshire?

My client would like to be just west of downtown - somewhere on Wilshire or Olympic - where we could get in and out quickly for a one-hour 10 am meeting. Willing to default to Starbucks but hoping for a non-chain. Thanks so much.

Meeting on Wilshire?

Thanks so much for the suggestions. I love DTLA and go there all the time but my client is coming from bev hills and would prefer somewhere with easy access before DTLA on Wilshire or Olympic.. I'm coming from the SGV so I don't want to head too far west. Thanks for the ideas.

Meeting on Wilshire?

Need a place for a 10 a.m. biz meeting near DTLA....maybe on Wilshire....I'd like to stay out of the d'town parking hassle. Any ideas for a simple (Pacific Dining Car too big a deal) place where we could have a late b'fast with some space around us?

Thanks!

Lunch near new Whitney?

And of course it's Michael Anthony not Danny Meyer as I said in my OP. Shame on me.

Lunch near new Whitney?

OP here. I've been traveling and am so embarrassed not to have checked in before now. Mille gracias for everyone's replies which were so helpful. I didn't know Untitled was open and they don't seem to be taking reservations on Open Table but I'll definitely call tomorrow and then will report back in.

Lunch near new Whitney?

Excited to be coming from LA to magical NYC to take my aunt to the new Whitney in lower Manhattan. Apparently there's a Danny Meyer restaurant going in, but I don't think it's open yet and we'll be there in 2 weeks.

Recs please for a terrific close-by place? My aunt uses a walker, but can manage a couple of blocks. Looking for a contemporary menu and not necessarily ethnic (particularly Latin or sushi coming from LA) unless there's something amazing.

Thanks so much.

Freezing french macaroons

I've ended up with a sealed tin box of macaroons baked 4 days ago and I'd like to serve them on Easter knowing they won't be perfect. If I put parchment paper between the layers; put them in a ziplock bag and then back in the box in the freezer - is that worth a try?

Chicken Pot Pie At Costco?

I get one every year for drop-ins on Halloween and it's perfect with a salad and a pinot grigio. A real crowd pleaser - it's incredibly rich and it weights a ton so it feeds an army. I add vegetables to our leftovers.

Pasta to cooking water ratio

Can I cook 2 lbs of spaghetti in one stock pot full of boiling water with no problem? I usually think one lb per pot, but would love to short-cut it! Hppy holiday cooking to all.

Mini-red cups in Pasadena

Thanks so much. Walmart sells 20 for $2.49 so I'll check out the grocery store. I buy my liquor at Costco so I've never seen.

Mini-red cups in Pasadena

Looking to find those 2 oz red cups to serve hot chocolate/peppermint schnapps/whipped creme shots at a party. Tried Target, BevMo and Smart & Final. I think WalMart carries so I can head there if I'm desperate. Thanks!

Table-turning at Twist

I'm so sorry to be late in responding to report on Twist. The food was delicious of course. I had the vegetarian prix fixe; one had duck; and two had the steak. The room is lovely and the service was good, but....

We had a 6 p.m. reservation and were the only people in the restaurant on arrival. Before any other diners were there, we wanted to take pix seated at the table of both couples and the maitre'd made us feel very uncomfortable. We were elegantly dressed in long dresses/suits and we're not yokels and I wouldn't have attempted pix if any other patrons had been there. Plus they knew 2 of us were having those 'millstone' (best typo ever) b'days.

We have been blessed to have eaten at top restaurants all over the world including JR in Las Vegas and we know how to behave. The service wasn't at all joyous or friendly throughout the meal and even though the food was wonderful, I wouldn't return. Maybe our trying to take one pic of each couple at the outset contributed to the way the maitre d treated us throughout.

In contrast, we went to the bar after dinner and as hotel guests we were shown to a fabulous window table and had terrific service. Maybe an off-night, but when I'm spending that kind of $$, I expect a smile.

Mini Chinese take out boxes?

I'm doing a holiday cocktail party and hunting for interesting ways to present hors d'oeuvres. I've seen pix of sesame noodles in mini Chinese take out boxes. Anyone seen these at a decent price in the SGV? Somewhere authentic rather than Container Store. Thanks!

Pasadena holiday food gifts, please

I like to give my clients holiday gifts of food from local (Pasadena) retailers that are chic and unusual. Any ideas for this year? I've done Lette (macaroons); Little Flower (caramels); Mignon (chocolate); Beyond the Olive (oil & vinegar); Jones (coffee). I thought about churros, but those really need to be eaten immediately and cheese/pate is too perishable. Do any local bakeries do world-class cookies? I considered croissants from Europane, but if they sat on a desk for a couple of days that'd be the end of it.

I don't know Highland Park well, but that'd be a great locale too. Thanks for any advice you might have.

Table-turning at Twist

Best millstone b'day has got to be the best Freudian slip ever!!!! I can't want to share that.

I asked if there was a time they needed the table and they said they allow for leisurely dining and we won't be rushed. Thanks for everyone's advice.

Table-turning at Twist

Four of us will be dining at Twist a week from Saturday and 2 of us will be celebrating millstone birthdays. Reservations were only available 6/6:30 & 9:30 and I chose 6 after learning this would give us our best chance of a window table.

I asked how many times they turn the table and the very nice person who took my rez didn't know. Do you have a sense how long we'd have a table on a Saturday night? I'd like to be there long enough to enjoy the nighttime view.

I can pull some strings to get a later rez, but won't if it's not necessary. Thanks!

First time to Nopa [San Francisco]

Hi. OP here. I promised to check back in after our dinner and report on the wait time which was 'nada.' We had a 7:30 reservation last Saturday and I confirmed earlier in the day. Arrived right at 7:30 and was shown right to our table....the first booth on the main floor...as requested. Right by the bar, but I thought the noise level was festive not overly loud.

The food, service and ambiance were all terrific and I felt Nopa lived up to the hype. Home cooking with a foodie edge. We had their signature dishes; the pork, chicken and vegetable tagine and all were excellent....ditto the beignets for dessert.

Thanks for everyone's advice which led to a terrific evening.

Brunch tomorrow, please

Would appreciate a brunch suggestion for tomorrow (Sunday). Visiting San Fran from LA and taking my 22-yo and her 4 friends to brunch tomorrow. Pretty sophisticated kids food-wise and we're based in Nopa and having dinner there tonight so that's out. 'Bottomless mimosas' seems important (takes me back to NYC in the 1980's LOL), but I can dissuade them of that.

I'd love somewhere with good basic brunch food (eggs benedict, burgers, omelets); that's not a scene so welcoming service; where we can linger.

Stock-in-trade has been suggested. Any ideas? Thank you!
