Food + morgue [San Francisco]

I know, I know. Not two words you often hear together!! Am taking our Auntie Mame to San Fran and all the things she wants to do last happened in the 1970's and most places are closed.

Can you help me figure this out? She says there was a restaurant she liked 'down by the morgue' (?!?!) but doesn't remember the name or the cuisine.

I Googled and there seems to be a restaurant currently housed in a funeral home, but that's not it. At least I thought this post would be good for a laugh.

Fireworks + dinner [San Francisco]

Thanks for your replies. I've been persuaded that July 4th weekend for a woman with a walker who's a bit shaky is sort of doomed so I'm switching our visit to a different weekend.

Fireworks + dinner [San Francisco]

We're visiting San Francisco July 4 with my elderly aunt from NYC and I wondered if there might be a nice restaurant where we could also see the fireworks? Even a place with less amazing food, but a rooftop view would be okay. Ditto across the bridge.

She uses a walker so I'm hoping for a place where we could see the fireworks from the table rather than her fighting the crowds to see fireworks after dinner. I know this is a tall order, but thanks.

Valentines Dinner

This isn't a food related comment, but I'll just say that in an age when the young people I know say 'dating is dead' you seem to be a guy who knows how to treat a young lady and hope you both have the BEST time!

Happy hour at The Grove

I'm meeting a biz associate at The Grove for a glass of wine because it's convenient for them. Recs please?

Of course I love the Farmer's Market but that might not be appropriate. Thanks.

Approve/improve my Christmas cocktail ideas, please

Thanks so much for the suggestions, Dan. I have all the ingredients for Manhattans and that's so retro-chic right now. Plus I have plenty of nice wine and champagne. Happy New Year and cheers.

Approve/improve my Christmas cocktail ideas, please

I'd like to offer 2 cocktails to lure my wine drinking friends away from the grape but I'm not a super experienced mixologist. I have a doz friends coming so the recipes need to be pretty simple but festive.

For one I thought I'd go with dark rum, spiced cider, pineapple juice and a slice of orange as a garnish. For the second vodka, raspberry puree, a splash of club soda (or 7-up?) for fizz and a skewer of raspberries as garnish. I've tested and they both are quite good.

I have a well-stocked bar and bitters, Rose's, etc. if you think I could improve upon the above without getting too complicated. Thank you!

Maison du Chocolat

I'm replying to my own post! La Maison du Chocolat told me they're doing free shipping for orders over $60 December 4-17th (isn) and you can specify a date in the future.

Maison du Chocolat

I have a friend whose favorite chocolate is Maison du Chocolat with stores in NYC and Paris. Any recs for similar quality chocolates locally? I live in Pasadena if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Perrier-Jouet

Thanks so much. I have a back-up ready.

When we were on our honeymoon at Stonepine in Carmel, CA many years ago my husband proudly brought a bottle of Dom he'd been saving for what turned out to be way too long. We still laugh about that. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

Perrier-Jouet

I just came across a bottle of Perrier-Jouet Brut Fleur de Champagne 1995. Any opinions as to whether I could serve on Thanksgiving with no problem? Not sure how long champagne lasts. Thanks!

Seasonal canapé ideas, please

Am having just 3 guests for cocktails this weekend and am hoping for ideas for autumnal canapés. I'd like them to be sophisticated, beautiful - and delicious! I'd prefer single-bites and I'm looking for things that are a bit substantial.

I'm planning to do small servings of butternut squash soup garnished with creme fraiche and pumpkin seeds. Any thoughts? Thank you!

92nd Street Y

I booked Sfoglia but we need to be in our seats at the 92 Street Y at 7 and Sfoglia's first seating is at 5:30 which might be a bit of a push. I inquired and they said 'we've done it before' so I might look elsewhere. I might try Paola's which really isn't that far. Thanks!

Thank you for thinking about that. My aunt is unbelievable - she wants to go up in a hot air balloon next! - but a bit closer is better. Thank you.

92nd Street Y

Visiting from LA and taking my NYC Auntie Mame to a lecture at the 92nd Street Y on a Sunday with dinner in advance. Didn't see a recent thread on this so asking for advice, please. Open to cuisine and looking for somewhere my walker-wielding aunt will be treated nicely. Coming from LA I'd prefer no sushi or Mexican - Italian always great - but very open.

Looking at old threads Sfoglia gets good, but sometimes mixed reviews. Also looking at Peri Ela and Pascalou. Would appreciate any counsel.

Cupcakes in a jar

Thanks everyone. I'm going to make for Halloween with chocolate cake, orange frosting and maybe crushed Butterfinger. Too bad I'll be on a big diet then!

Cupcakes in a jar

I saw a piece about 'Wicked Good Cupcakes' a Boston purveyor of cupcakes-in-a-jar on Shark Tank last night and would like to duplicate at home. Recipes seem to be very simple: bake regular cupcakes and cut in half, then layer in a jar with frosting and toppings. Is there any trick to this I'm missing? Thanks!

Jazz up mixed berries?

Just to close the circle....my mixed berries were a big hit thanks to your advice and were so easy. I lightly tossed straw, blue, black and raspberries with honey and mint leaves and served them with a bowl of creme fraiche. The only change I'd make is not to toss with the raspberries - add them after - as they got smushed despite my light handling. Thanks, Chowies!

Jazz up mixed berries?

These are such amazing ideas you guys! I will skip the liqueur although will try that at home sometime. It's all women and we do love us some greek yogurt so I think I'll put a bowl of yogurt in the center and then pile the fruit around it. Some honey and mint will be a good add too. Thanks again!

Jazz up mixed berries?

I'm bringing mixed berries (straw, blue, black, rasp) to an office luncheon and I wondered if there's anything I could do to make them more exciting either in terms of preparation or presentation? Thanks!

Am I asking too much of my blender?

Thank you. I think this item has a bit of a retro look and our kitchen is black/contemporary but I might break down and get a juicer. Thanks for the idea though.

Key Lime Pie - enough filling?

Just back from my event and my pie + whipped creme was a hit. I'm definitely going to do that two-layer pie though. Looks relish.

Key Lime Pie - enough filling?

Thank you everybody. I baked as is as i feel like I once doubled the recipe for the filling and it just didn't turn out quite right. More whipped creme please!

Key Lime Pie - enough filling?

I'm making a key lime pie with the Nellie & Joe's recipe and I feel like there's not much filling vs graham cracker crust, but I may have taken the crust too far up the sides of the pie plate. Should I do another recipe of filling and add before I bake? I feel like I did that once before and it was a mistake. Thanks!
