Great lunch in Everett area

Hi folks - We are taking our boss out to lunch. She is a real foodie and we are looking for a great restaurant in the area. Dives are wonderful as long as the food is great. A festive atmosphere would be an unexpected bonus.

1) Any suggestions?

2) Can you rank my current short list, based on food, ambience - i.e. can we sit down (not Bob's) and wait time:
FuLoon, Malden; Chili Garden, Medford; Angela's, East Boston; Abondanza, Everett.

Thanks!

Fun, fancy, elegant bars

Hi folks. I am out to dinner in Boston with a friend tomorrow. I have two young children and haven't been out much lately, so I've missed many of the new restaurants of the last 5 years.

We have a dinner reservation, but I am looking for a place to meet for drinks first. Maybe two places. Expensive is okay. As a frame of reference, here are some bars I have liked: Rialto and East Coast Grill in Camb, Pegu in NYC, Bix in San Francisco. I will probably try Drink. Any place else that 1) has great drinks - a must, 2) fun, 3) interesting interiors/architecture.

Suggestions?

Just came back. Worth the $15 @ the door if you like desserts. Here's what's there:

Strawberry Hill Confectionery - all organic. Something that looks like a lollipop, but you put in a cup of water and it makes a cup of sweet tea. Maple lollipops.

Sugar Me Cookies - Vegan choc chip cookie batter $15/lb

Sugabettens Baking - Stuff you've seen before, but the execution is great. Very nice coconut layer bars.

Cassis Bakery Inc. - Very pretty mini-pastries.

Will do. Actually, it's not a Sysco fanfest. I went through the list I have and checked out the exhibitors' websites. There are a lot of small operators, a few from Nuestra Culinary Ventures, the shared kitchen facility in JP run by Nuestra Communidad, the CDC in Roxbury. Some names you'd know, like Finale, Godiva and the Chart House.

New England Dessert Showcase

No, I don't have anything to do with the show; mostly I am a foodie. I've worked in the wholesale bakery industry on the business side and I write a (nascent) blog for mass/commercial bakery buyers (grocery, supermarket, club stores, etc.) and bakery owners: www.brodheadandbutter.com. I did trade emails with someone working on the show and I have a list of the exhibitors up on my blog. Looks like a standard bakery show, but with a few parties (why?!) and a cooking demonstration thrown in. I considered inviting some folks I know, but I can't find anything else about it – nothing in today’s Globe Food section, nothing on restaurant sites. Grey Goose is sponsoring one event, but the other two sponsors are The Cholive Company – a chocolate olive garnish for sweet drinks - and TheFoodMonkey.com, neither of which strike me as big budget sponsors. I am no one to talk, but kinda podunk, huh?

As far as my work, I am particularly interested in new or better products and tastes - what’s out there from restaurants, bakeries, street vendors, farm markets – that could be commercialized. You know, really great baked goods that you wish you could buy all the time. Like the Gibassier at Clearflour – but not for $3.50 a piece. (FYI, if you haven’t had one, go there. If you can’t, here’s a recipe from Ciril Hitz, one of the best pastry chefs in the US, also a professor at Johnson & Wales in RI. http://www.grouprecipes.com/52231/le-... )

I am going, but it would be nice to have some info before the event, since presumably it will be another year before the next event. Maybe if it goes well they'll do it more often.

Is anyone going to the NE Dessert Showcase? Has anyone heard about it? Do you know anyone who is going? The only thing I can find is from various newspapers reprinting one of their press releases. It looks like this is it's first year. It is at the Marriott Longwharf this weekend and is supposed to have a significant B2B component.

Thanks. I hope to try Fuloon tomorrow, or Guru depending on where my lunch companion wants to go. Kelly's was a useful recommendation. It has good clam chowder, the milky kind which I like. And a drive through.

Thanks to all for the Chili Garden recommendation and thanks for the specific menu suggestions. The beef noodle soup, such an unassuming name, was fantastic. The pork fried rice was very mundane and a lost opportunity in comparison to the soup. Seems like it's worth sticking to the Sichuan part of the menu.

Cafe Toscana - Yes, physically it is right out of the North End. So full of old guys at 9 in the morning! They all have their Members Only jackets on. You can't get a parking space in front because of all of the big American sedans. Cookies were lousy, not a suprise. The latte I had was good but not great. Still a nice little joint in the neighborhood.

I stopped here for takeout since it is so close and easy. Nice little buffet. The goat curry was suprisingly good. Nice and fresh sauces and chutneys to round out the buffet. Thanks.

I understood from your post that Angelina's doesn't make the cut. But, I am always looking for those places - make a pilgrimage whenever you are near. Are there any around here? I will travel for those. This is wide open territory for me -- Everett? Malden?

I just finished yesterday's leftover Porchetta panini from Il Sogno. I think it was better today. It was nice to see it in your list, because that's exactly the kind of place I'm looking for -- given, it does have some ambience in Meford/Italian/slice-of-life-way. Thanks for the ideas. I searched Yelp last night and Guru came up as #1 within 2 miles, so that's a must do.

I've started a new job recently in Wellington Circle. Where's the great food in this area? I am open to any type of food. Ambience is overrated, so just the best food that you've ever eaten that's in a 10 minute or so drive. For a frame of reference, here's what I can see is in a few mile radius: Meadow Glen Mall, Gateway Center, Tufts, Davis Sq, Assembly Sq Mall. Thanks.

Really tasty food in Everett/Medford area??

I am going rock climbing with friends at MetroRock in Everett. I think it is near Meadow Glen Mall. It is in an industrial park near the Mellon Bank Building. Any really tasty food and drink nearby? Any neighborhood joints with a decent bar? What's the closest exceptional food -- anything really worth making a detour for?

Guarapo de Cana - Sugar Cane Juice; Yerba Buena?

Thanks for the info. I've found both the canned Thai sugar cane and two brands of canned sugar cane juice - or really sugar cane drink - at Super 88. I am still looking for fresh juice and I will try some of your suggestions.

Pressing your own cane seems to be out of the question. I read about it on an Australian website for vegetarians. Apparently there are presses made just for this. The pictures were of old ones. They looked like they were cast iron and about the size of a refrigerator.

Any ideas where to get fresh sugar cane (for garnish) ? I know you can get it in the area, because I had some in my basement refrigerator for months after a random purchase somewhere. Whole Foods (Newton) does not have it and neither does Super 88. I may have gotten it at Haymarket one Friday.

Also yerba buena (or hierba buena) anyone?

Thanks again.

Guarapo de Cana - Sugar Cane Juice; Yerba Buena?

I am trying to recreate a mojito I had recently in Miami. They used sugar cane juice. Apparently this is sometimes available fresh at Latin markets. Goya sells it in cans. Does anyone know any place to get this in the Boston area? Has anyone made guarapo from fresh sugar cane? If so, where is a good place to get fresh sugar cane: Super 88? I understand that organic sugar cane is preferred by many -- any ideas? How about finding yerba buena, which is a wild Cuban mint?
