Tatte's Cookies Brookline
That is a sad story, although I don't know that it's the same woman as my visit wasn't "years" ago.
I also don't happen to consider illness a reason to be rude. My father is suffering a similar battle and at no point would he nor I consider it a reason to be mean to anyone.

Parish Cafe might be fun for them. Their website is under construction, but they feature sandwiches created by local chefs. Summer Shack is loud but fun (seafood) and there's bowling next door if you're looking for something to do afterward.

Tatte's Cookies Brookline
I did the same thing. I was drawn in by the packaging every time but the price was completely nuts. I'm glad to see the Savoy gone to tell the truth (as many times as I went in there - I did love their croissants - that woman was always rude to me) but not sure those high prices will serve that end of Beacon Street very well.
finz and asahi in brighton
I'll second Asahi. Good value, tiny little place with very friendly people.
30th Birthday Dinner and after....
I had my 30th at Eastern Standard with 6 people. We never made it for after dinner cocktails as we had too many before and during dinner cocktails.
Tasca in Brighton is always one of my favorites for birthdays, also. Great sangria, great food, fun atmosphere, and tapas means everyone can get what they want. Although I suppose that would extend to any small plate establishment. I'm just partial to Tasca.
Clear Flour Golden Fruit Tea Bread
I didn't even have to read the description - just the title of this post had my mouth watering. I am going to set my alarm and drag my hungover self down there this weekend. Thanks for the heads up!
Charley's, Back Bay (Walked Out); Bagel Rising (Not Bad)
Bagel Rising is the only thing I miss about not living in Allston. Mmm chicken salad on a jalapeno bagel.
Does Anybody Like Dolce Vita?
My friends love it, too. I guess they figure it's such a pain to get to from Brighton that they want dinner and a show. I wasn't impressed.
We're all allowed to love a thing or two that no one else understands. For me it's peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches on white bread - a childhood favorite - and Christina Aguilera.
Nachos, anyone?
Agreed on the Yuppie Nachos. A fantastic find, and a personal favorite.
Big City calls them Mediterranean Nachos, Sunset calls it Spinach and Artichoke dip - whatever, it comes out of the same kitchen and I call it delicious. Pita chips with spinach and artichoke dip, hummus, feta, cheese, and cracked olive salsa. Love them. Also love Big City's Red White and Blue nachos with BBQ chicken, which I imagine are just like Sunset's nachos with BBQ chicken.
Beerworks nachos are okay, but the one near North Station tends to let them get a little too brown for my taste.
The problem with CC Clubhouse nachos is that they're stacked high, making it difficult to eat (like Nacho Jenga) and also distributing most of tha good stuff on top.
I'm still on the lookout for breakfast nachos. I think it can be done (beans, salsa, cheese, crumbled bacon, scrambled egg on... toast points, maybe?) despite my nay-saying friends.
How do you dress up your Kraft mac & cheese?
My friend Dave told me about this a few weeks ago. He likes to make it when camping in Montana:
Cheesy Chili Mac
In a bowl, layer mac and cheese
canned chili
mac and cheese
canned chili
top with EZ Cheese.
Just reading that leaves a salty taste in my mouth. Deadly and delicious...
Top of the Hub
Agreed. I've always enjoyed the food, drinks, and service there, not to mention the view. I'm local and quite self-respecting. I say go, Luci, and let us know what you think.
French press replacement parts in Boston?
Before I spend my day hitting every possible store in the Boston area, does anyone know where I can find french press replacement parts in Boston? I don't have access to a car, but paying $3.95 shipping for a $3.00 filter to order online seems silly.
Thanks!
Fins - Cleveland Circle
I tried Asahi for the first time about a month ago - I loved it. Tiny, cozy, friendly... great neighborhood sushi place.
What is going in the Penny Savings bank?
Is it just me or does the word "fusion" make everyone else's skin crawl as well?
i've got the cilantro chicken sausage, what to do with it?
Like Gio, I don't know the laws. I do know I use chicken sausage in my chili instead of ground beef. I also saute it with peppers and tomatoes and top pasta with it.
Anthem Closed
I had a really good tuna noodle casserole there once. No, really. And chalk it up to another opportunity missed - I had planned many times to go for the fried Twinkie and never did. Any other place in Boston I can find one if I choose to clog my arteries in such a deliciously sweet fashion?
"80's" Cuisine?
Oh man, we always had Bartles & Jaymes in the house. My mother loved those. Makes me wonder what moms drink now?
Astronaut food, definitely. Tab. Shasta soda. It's hard to not think of junk food because I was a kid in the 80's and was convinced I could live off of slush puppies and Now & Laters.
Hi-C Ecto Cooler? Or was that the early 90's?

Argh. I strongly dislike this post.

This is what I'm talking about earlier in this thread - sort of needlessly snarky. Which isn't to say I disagree entirely with what she's trying to say here, but I find it sort of obnoxious to point these things out in such a public forum. The Chili's reference in particular bugs me ("Chili's - Copley is looking for you!!" Run. Hide.) - it sounds really classist, like working at a Chili's is below the column's readers. Or this:
"JOSHUA TREE'S NEW LOCATION AT 1316 COMMONWEALTH AVE. IN ALLSTON WILL BE HOLDING INTERVIEWS FOR EXPERIENCED SERVERS, DOORMEN, FOODRUNNERS, AND BUSSERS." Because one wasn't enough.
I find Joshua Tree's meh bar food to be harmless and imagine it will be at least a touch better than Tonic on many levels (sort of hard to be worse than Tonic IMHO), so I'm not quite sure what they've done to offend her so. I imagine we're not meant to know, and to tell the truth don't want to encourage a "review" that's really "26 Insulting Things I Think Are Cute to Say". I know some people here are fans, but I just really dislike her writing style.
There. I said it.
Coming Soon - Double Shabu Shabu in Allston
Not related at all - the Jasmine Sola outlet (I read somewhere) is moving out to make way for ... regularly priced Jasmine Sola.
Related: I was in that area last night and I didn't notice that Greenfields is no more. I loved that place. Any suggestions on where to get my meat-on-swords fix in the Allston/Brighton area? I know there are places but Greenfields was the only one I've been to.
Kowloon?! Really?!
I adore Kowloon. My first visit there featured an Elvis impersonator. My second visit there, I came home with a coconut monkey head. It's the quality of my neighborhood Chinese restaurant with 46,000 times the entertainment factor. Yes, I know it's only poorly made sweet and sour chicken but it comes in a pineapple shell and it's on FIRE. Maybe it's just because the entire scene is a throwback to my days growing up in Jersey...
Review: Gaslight last night
I went to Aquitaine for the first time a few weeks ago and there were no bread plates. Verrrrry interesting... *twirls mustache thoughtfully*
Fireplace Restaurant
I've been going here since literally the night after it opened. I have never had a rude waitperson. I've had some less talkative than others, but never out and out rude (like I have at, say, Washington Square Tavern, which I still love because the food is so good). I've been for brunch, dinner, lunch, drinks... you name it, and I'm never dissatisfied. I find the management to be approachable and involved, something I don't see a whole lot of in other places. (wait, I take that back - one night I was there with a friend and we were one of a few people still listening to the live music, which is usually a very cool, laid back scene and there was a manager that night who was a woman maybe in her 20's, 30's and she was pretty rude to the musicians and kicked everyone out as soon as closing time hit. I hope she's gone. She sucked. But I never saw her there before late night hours.)
I've never gone with more than three people, though, so maybe that's the key? It might be - I know that in the past year they've added a catering business and a separate person to manage it. I wonder if that person also manages large groups/private parties.
Dinner
Funny - I feel like I've been bashed in a shaker and strained into a small martini glass.
Also, I love Carlo's.
Best greasy egg & cheese sandwich
I used to live near there as well. I had a craving one morning for soggy toast and sent Boyfriend-At-The-Time to get me a big ol' takeout carton full of eggs and homefries and cheese and toast. Ridiculous. Perfect.
Why spend all that time trying to extract the bitter from dark coffee (which I happen to enjoy) when you could find a bacon that burns calories? Let's start using science for good!
Coming Soon in Allston and Brookline
Firenze closed?
Oh dear. I have such fond memories of dinners there.
More Japanese? Really? Sigh.
My office is moving to the Back Bay - where will I have lunch now?
You're two blocks over from me! I tend to bring a lunch because the ABP/Souper Salad route gets old really quickly, but when I do go out:
Parrish has great sandwiches; I tend to go there when I want to get out of the office and have a real lunch. The people I work with also go to 29 Newbury a lot, but I find their food to be just ok and their service at lunch to be painfully slow. Shino Express on Newbury is where I go for sushi because it's nearby and cheap. Tealuxe on Newbury has sandwiches and salads (not sure if their lunches are take out). During the summer and fall, on Tuesdays and Fridays, the Farmer's Market in Copley Square has really delicious options. Delucca's on Charles Street (there's one on Newbury, too, but I think that's further away from where we are than Charles would be) makes great sandwiches and has good snack food, too. Bonus: the walk across the Garden and up Charles Street and back is a good, quick I-am-having-a-horrible-day-and-I-hate-everyone release.
Cheese plate in Harvard Square?
I'm almost positive I ate a cheese plate at Om once. I also drank two orange infused manhattans, though, so the details of that night are a little fuzzy...
Icky experience at Aquitaine
Before handing it back, co-worker should have mentioned that she had already eaten off the plate. I'm going to give these guys the benefit of the doubt and guess that they mixed up an order and assumed she hadn't touched the plate and they chose the fastest way to remedy the situation.
Of course, we are talking about Aquitaine and not a greasy spoon, so I'll argue with myself and say that's really kind of gross no matter what - the appropriate answer is that the waiter should have just brought her a side of mayo and gotten a new sandwich from the kitchen.
