how's the food at swift on east 4th st?

I will be attending a birthday party at Swift Hiberian Lounge on east 4th tomorrow. Can anyone tell me anything about the food? Is anything on the menu known to be delicious?

provence or italian lunch for around $30 a person

I have been charged with finding a restaurant for my girlfriend's mother's birthday lunch. Here are her requirements:

1) Provence or Italian food (she didn't specify a subregion of Italy)
2) Located in or near midtown (we'll be heading to a broadway show after lunch)
3) around $30 a person without wine
4) great wine selection -- my gf's parents drink a lot of wine

This is for saturday, so any place that requires a reservation weeks in advance obviously won't work.

Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

Disappointing NY pizza [Moved from the LA board]

I would add:
Nicks (for calzone, if that's not cheating)
Joe and Pats (in Staten Island)
Spumoni Gardens

Disappointing NY pizza [Moved from the LA board]

Ah, now I understand your original post. First of all, yes, the other places that you missed were amazing. I respect the opinions of others on this board, but personally I've never had better than mediocre pizza at DeMarco or Grimaldi. Certainly not in the same league as the greats in my experience.

Second, it's certainly very easy to get bad pizza in NY. Hell, there's shitty pizza right on my very corner. I'm sure more mediocre pizza is consumed per day in New York than any other city in America. I bet they drink a lot of mediocre red wine in Paris, too. New York is on a pizza pedestal not because every single pizza place in a city of 8 million is great, but because there are a dozen or so pizza places that are simply in another league.

(That's why I put NYC on a pizza pedestal, at any rate.)

Bars in Eastern Jackson Heights

Actually, by decent beer selection I meant "has something *other* than Negro Modelo on top of 4 to 5 watery Pilsners" You have answered as I feared.

Nevertheless, thanks for the tips on sports bars; I'll check them out.

Bars in Eastern Jackson Heights

I've recently moved to Jackson Heights, and with the aid of Jim Leff's street map, I've found a lot of delicious chow. However, I'm still hunting for bars. Can anyone suggest places where I can find:

A decent beer selection?
Darts?
A place to sit and chat?
Sports other than soccer on the tv?

Thanks!

Peter Luger demoted to two stars... what has happened to the emperor's new clothes?

I have been to Luger perhaps a half a dozen times of the past few years, and only on my most recent trip did the staff seem at all rude. On my list trip, it seemed that the waiter was upset that everyone in our party ordered burgers instead of steak, and he let it show. I thought that was a little unprofessional, but it certainly didn't change the burger or the bacon, which are still sublime.

On other visits, I've found the staff very polite. To answer the original question, no, I don't see any evidence that PL is slipping.

tacos etc in eastern jackson heights

I'm moving to jackson heights (around the 90th st 7 stop). What's the story about chow in my new neighborhood? I see a lot of street food, a lot of tacos, a lot of mexican resturants.

What stands out? Where should I get tacos? What are the jewels of eastern jackson heights?

Late night cheap eats on vegas strip

I am going to be in Vegas this weekend, and I've planned the meals I'll eat while the sun is up. But it occurs to me that I'll likely find myself wandering the strip at 2 or 3 am, half-drunk, half-broke, and looking for chow.

Where's a fellow to find good, hearty food on the Vegas strip in the middle of the night? I'm talking steak, eggs, burgers, fries, steak sandwiches, brisket sandwiches... all the food I'll crave after a night of hitting the bars and casinos. For example, can I get a respectable steak for under $10 on the strip in the middle of the night?

Where do I go besides Denny's and In-n-Out Burger?

vegas bar/lounge with great whiskey selection

I'm planning a bachelor party for 8 guys in their late twenties in Vegas. I'm looking for a bar that has a good selection of scotch and American whiskey. The bar needn't be bursting at the seams with people and energy (we'll get that at spearmint rhino), but we do want to feel like we're living it up in Vegas.

So far, I'm thinking Napolean in Paris, and a bar a friend recommended "right by the entrance to the Bellagio," but I have not been to these bars myself.

Which Vegas steaks are dry aged?

Well, I chose Delmonico, in part because the wine list was so widely praised. There seems to be a wide range of opinion about it on this board; I'm very interested to see how it stacks up.

Which Vegas steaks are dry aged?

I'm planning a bachelor party dinner for 6-8 in Vegas, and I'm trying to decide between the various top steakhouses -- Prime, Delmonico, Charlie Palmer, SW, Craftsteak, N9NE....

1) Does anyone know how these various steakhouses age their steak?

2) Am I right that the places listed above all charge about the same ammount -- $40-50 for a steak a la carte?
