Amada roast suckling pig, August 31 (Tuesday)

Julie here. Honestly, I had a very enjoyable time. It was a bit loud so a bit harder to hear and socialize. I didn't see any rudeness, but maybe I've lived on the East coast too long. The food was very good, although a bit salty. My almost-2 year old LOVED the pig leftovers. We still have a little bit left that I plan to give her for lunch today. She also really liked the potatoes. I'm not a big scallion fan so to me there were good but not amazing amazing. I did like the crispy lightness of the almond cookie they gave at the end. Although it wasn't anything special, it contrasted nicely with the heavy meal. I will definitely be back with my husband for a night out with tapas, but I don't know if I will order the pig for a while. It seems like a once in a few years thing. I apologize if I wasn't as engaging by the end of the night. It was somewhat past my bedtime.

Grass (pasture) Fed Chicken?

http://www.rumblewayfarm.com/

I buy mine from Rumbleway Farm. At $3/lb, it's the best deal I've found. Of course, I live in MD only half hour from them, but it's not that far from Philly since I go out to Philly to eat every once in a while.

Bistro 44 - Toms River

Thank you so much for recommending places down here in toms river, bgut1. It's always hard to find places near this neck of the woods. Every time I see this post resurrected, I keep reminding myself to go try out Bistro 44. In fact, I even have a gift certificate to it. I just keep forgetting. :( On another note, have you tried the mexican-columbian place on route 166? It's called el familiar.

Anyone been to The Pomegranate Grill in Lakewood, NJ

Sorry for the late reply, RGR. It isn't kosher anymore. When I went, I had a shish kabob dish that was delicious. The shrimp was grilled so the outside was crispy and the inside was tender and sweet. Same for the beef. It was deliciously cooked to medium rare. I wanted the lamb couscous, but they ran out that night. I would say it was quite good, but a little out of my way since I don't go onto route 9 that often.

Barbarella, I'm not sure what you're talking about. This was on Route 9 between Toms River and lakewood. The address is 1209 river road (did a quick google lookup).

Anyone been to The Pomegranate Grill in Lakewood, NJ

I went to this restaurant once after the owner reopened it. It used to be Heimish Pizza which had great gyros and pre-made foods. It was pretty good, but service was a little bit crazy (probably due to inexperienced waitstaff). It has become a mediteranean grill with fish, lamb couscous and other things I can't remember (since I haven't been there in over a month). I was just curious if anyone else had been there and what they're opinion of it was.

Fune in Eatontown, NJ

I feel horrible about your experience at Fune. I've been there a few times for their eat-in service to be excellent although I've never gotten take out there before. For better Korean I make the hike to Woojeon in New Brunswick/Edison (?).

My Favorite Asian Things (in the Monmouth Co area)

Don't forget Saigon II. It's not the best Vietnamese place I've been to, but it does satisfy a craving unless I want to take a long drive. The food used to be pretty bad, but has gotten better after the renovation.

The Taiwanese place in the bowling alley is also one of my favorites. I can tell you for certain that their dishes are authentic Taiwanese dishes. Some things on the menu are not in Chinese restaurants like the steamed meat bun thing (not sure what it's called on the menu). It is flat, and has a rice flour outside. It can be steamed or fried and has bamboo, meat, mushrooms, etc. inside. Usually served with a hot and sweet sauce. There is also a gooey noodle soup with oysters.

Italian Food in Red Bank, NJ - Dining in Lakehurst & Ft. Dix area too..

I'm sure someone can help me out here, but I heard that there's a good German place near Ft. Dix (?) Other than that, I don't recall anything much near there.

And, everyone forgot Piancone's in Bradley Beach. I know lots of people who go there everytime they have to travel to the Eatontown area.

Long Branch NJ restaurant driving tour

I recommend Pearl of Lisbon at Broadway and Branchport in Long Branch. This great Portuguese place used to be The Pearl of the Sea at the end of Broadway (off Ocean), and the food has not suffered from the move.

The password is.... CHEAP!

There was a little ramen place outside of the JR Iidabashi station west exit that was really good a few years back. I'd been going to that place since 2000, but I'm not sure if it's still there. There is a hostel right by the iidabashi station that serves a pretty good Japanese breakfast for 450 yen. Good gems I remember included delicious fish and tasty side dishes.

If you are going to Hakone, make the short, cheap trip (by light rail) to Owakudani (sp?) They are known for their hard-boiled eggs cooked in the hot springs (black-colored) and Wasabi ice cream. Wasabi ice cream was really good there. So was the egg and cheese.

tapas, central nj?

I went there specifically for tapas and was told that they didn't serve them at lunch. The sandwiches I ordered were less than mediocre.

crowne palace, middltwn or marlboro?

I only go to the Marlboro location for dim sum, which I have found to be better than the Middletown location. The authentic chinese dish menu at the middletown location for lunch is pretty good. Last time I went I had beef with bittermelon and some kind of roasted chicken (forgot what kind) plus some chinese vegetables.
