Looking for Valentine's ideas please!

Hello! I am looking for some simple but stunning Valentine's Day ideas for dinner for myself and DH. Since I will be at work that day, the more that could be prepared ahead, the better. I am thinking salad, main course and then dessert.

I would love to cook him a steak but I am not a red meat fan, so i was thinking maybe pork? Or Cornish hens?

Any ideas would be great, thank you!

For dessert, I have a sheet of puff pastry in the freezer and was thinking of doing something with that. Pear tartlets maybe?

Thanks!

What to make for work cook-off?

Stella do you have a recipe? That sounds very tasty.

What to make for work cook-off?

Thanks for the ideas everyone!

Re: the chilli, thanks for the recipe. My mom used to make that and I've been meaning to ask her for the recipe.

This cook-off used to be a chili one, so I'm not sure if people will bring chili again this year. I like the idea of it though since it can be made in advance.

Thanks!

Thanksgiving 'Iron Chef': Corn!

Gourmet Magazine had a great recipe this summer for Chipotle shrimp with corn. Let me see if I can find it...

What to make for work cook-off?

Hello!

We are having a charity cook-off at work and I am thinking of entering. There are four categories - appetizers, entrees, side dishes and desserts.

It has to be something that can stay warm in a crockpot or something cold since I don't think there will be any heating-up facilities.

I was thinking maybe pulled pork in the crockpot to make mini slider sandwiches. I also thought about making shortbread cookies since I get rave reviews on them.

Do you guys have any other good ideas? Any ideas would be great. Thanks so much!

What to request from Dean and Deluca?

Thank you everyone!

We received those ginger cookies as part of a gift set from his work at Christmas and they were delicious!

Thanks for the ideas!

What to request from Dean and Deluca?

My husband is in NYC this week and I asked him to bring me something fun or tasty from Dean and Deluca. Anything specific that is good from there that you can recommend?

thanks!

Failed snickerdoodles - what happened?

I just made Nigella's snickerdoodle recipe for the first time. followed the recipe exactly and rolled the balls of dough into the size per the recipe and baked according to instructions.

They all stayed in their little ball shapes and did not flatten out as I expected. Any ideas why not?

They are delicious but like little balls rather than flat cookies :(

Looking for good places to eat in Austin

Someone else recommended Shoreline Grill - it looks good. Anyone been?

Right now, Shoreline and Eddie V's are our top picks...

Looking for good places to eat in Austin

Thanks everyone! It took me a few minutes to find my post and your replies!

Thanks for the info on Moonshine. I guess when I say American, we're looking for non-ethnic places and just good food at reasonable (but not too cheap) prices. I guess around $100 for two of us?

I'll check out Hoover's and East Side Cafe. Someone recommended the Hula Hut but we have Chuy's here and I'm not a huge fan. Plus, we're only there for two nights so something a bit different would be nice.

Thanks!

Looking for good (healthy) sandwich ideas

Thanks everyone! Those are some great ideas! I think I'll definitely try the freezing baguette thing and see how that works.

Thanks!

Looking for good (healthy) sandwich ideas

I am getting bored with my usual homemade salads for lunch and am thinking of going the sandwich route. Any healthy but filling ideas would be appreciated!

As for breads, I usually keep a good loaf in the freezer and just use slices as needed. Any other tips for keeping bread fresh? I'd love to use baguettes but they go stale on me too quickly.

Thanks everyone!

Dallas Rehearsal Dinner Help Needed

How about Mattitos on Cedar Springs? A friend had her rehearsal dinner there and it was great. Private room, good band, food and drinks.

Looking for good places to eat in Austin

We are going for a weekend trip to Austin in a couple of weeks and are looking for good (but not too expensive) places to eat. Preferably something American, non Tex Mex (we're from Dallas so get plenty of that already!).

Someone already recommended Moonshine and it looks perfect. Any other ideas are appreciated and any good breakfast places would be great. We are staying downtown.

Thanks!

Hello! I'm new with a risotto question

Thanks everyone! I used arborrio rice. I think I maybe just didn't let it cook long enough, or add enough stock. I'll definitely try again - practice makes perfect hopefully. Thanks!

Hello! I'm new with a risotto question

Hello! I've been lurking a while reading all sorts of fabulous chow posts :)

Inspired by everyone here, I made my first attempt at risotto last night. I think it turned out ok, not quite as creamy or "soft" as I was hoping for - more like rice than the creamy risotto it should have been.

I'm thinking maybe I didn't cook it long enough, or add enough stock. I used about 3 cups of stock to one cup of the rice.

Any tips are appreciate. Thanks!
