Brooklyn source of active dry yeast in a jar?

Thanks, all. 4 oz jars found at Super Stop & Shop in Flatbush. All the grocery stores near me seem only to stock the packets - these other sources are great to know about.

Brooklyn source of active dry yeast in a jar?

I know I can buy it in bulk from Amazon.com, but first I'd like to know if anyone has seen jars (Red Star or Fleischmann's brand) of active dry yeast anywhere in (not too remote) Brooklyn? Thanks.

Catering breakfast and lunch in Carroll Gardens?

I'd be grateful for recommendations of places that could cater delicious but simple breakfast and lunch for a group of about 16 (many of whom are vegetarian) for an event in Carroll Gardens. Thanks in advance!

Mystery Fruit.... can I eat it?

Looks a lot like quince to me.

Stumptown Coffee store opens on Clinton St.

Did the barista confirm that Stumptown has finally started roasting beans in Red Hook?

Tortas

I just had a fantastic chile rellenos torta this week at Chavella's on Classon Ave. in Prospect Hts/Crown Heights.

What's left for brunch in Carroll Gardens?

I thought Frankies discontinued brunch last year and now does only lunch & dinner?

Cafe Peddlar?

Hurrah and thanks for the report! (I went by around 9:15 this a.m. and the gates were still down - have to give it a try tomorrow.) Are they selling Stumptown beans there?

Cafe Peddlar?

New cafe on Court @ Warren in Cobble Hill (a new venture by the Frankies, serving Stumptown coffee and Viennese-style pastry) was supposed to have opened today. Anyone pay a visit, have a report?

Wheat berries

Thanks very much, HLing - this is very helpful. And if you're using wheat berries whole in a bread, do you know if one kind is beter than the other?

Bitters?

Anyone have suggestions on where one can buy bitters (amer picon, amaro, etc. - not angostura, which Key Foods carries) in or near Brooklyn? Why are they so hard to find? Thanks much.

Vegan lunch in BH?

Not exactly BH, but if you don't mind walking into Cobble Hill, Wild Ginger (pan-Asian vegan) recently opened on Smith between (I think) Dean and Pacific. It's a bit pricey for dinner, but they have lunch specials and I've liked it quite a bit the couple of times I've eaten there. My friend said the vegan chocolate "cheese"cake she got for dessert was meh.

cashew cookie recipe?

So, instead of trying any of the delish-looking recipes y'all provided, I made a kind of basic cookie dough (butter, even mix of brown & white sugar, egg, vanilla, white flour, half tsp each of soda and powder) and mixed in some chopped cashews that I'd lightly candied & roasted with kosher salt and some cayenne. Then I formed them into little balls and rolled them in more of the same cashews, even more finely chopped, including all the salty spicy shards of carmelized sugar that adhered or not to the nuts. Baked at 350 until just barely browned around the edges. They came out quite flat and crisp. I'm a big fan of salt/sweet/heat combos and these li'l guys fill the bill perfectly.

What was it?

Arrghhh! Las Manitas is closed??

Maybe chayotes?

Bulk spices in BK?

Because I bought only whole spices, they seemed good when freshly ground - couldn't speak for the freshness of the ground spices (and generally I don't like to buy those when they're sold out of non-airtight containers like bulk bins).

Bulk spices in BK?

Thanks for the D'Vine Taste recs - I found everything I needed there and more - will no doubt go back.

cashew cookie recipe?

Thanks for the great suggestions and recipes - I'll report back!

Wheat berries

HLing, re hard or soft: is one better in bread, and how about differences vis-a-vis other uses? Thanks!

cashew cookie recipe?

Anyone have a cashew cookie recipe they'd be willing to share? I'm especially interested in something with both chewy and crunchy textures to it. Thanks very much!

Saul on Smith: what's new?

We had a delicious dinner there last week - the $40 prix fixe featured two choices (between meat or seafood - bf got the former, I got the latter) on apps and entree. The pasta course was a tagliatelle topped with a poached or coddled egg that the bf loved even though he usually prefers his eggs non-runny. Surprisingly, even though we didn't dine late and the restaurant was pretty empty, they'd already supposedly run out of the skate entree and the pine nut tart dessert, but the substitutions (snapper, walnut tart respectively) were lovely (actually though the fish seemed more like skate to me than snapper...?). Nice simple curried red lentil amuse bouche too. I'd read reviews saying that the prix fixe isn't much food but we came away full to the gills (maybe because we couldn't stay away from the bread basket). (Also they serve Gorilla coffee in a press pot.)

Bulk spices in BK?

Thanks for all the helpful replies!

Bulk spices in BK?

Very helpful advice - thanks a lot!

Bulk spices in BK?

Thanks very much for this. I should have mentioned that Sahadi's seems to sell spices only in enormous containers (the equivalent of 2-3 jars) nowadays. I know that Two for the Pot sells bulk spices, but I don't know how fresh their stock is. Info on any other locations in that vicinity would be much appreciated.

Bulk spices in BK?

I'm looking to buy small amounts of things like cardamom pods, coriander seed, caraway, etc . Anyone know of a place that has a reliably fresh supply of such spices? Thanks much in advance.

Union Hall brunch?

Is Union Hall @ 5th & Union in Park Slope still serving brunch on Sat-Sun afternoons? If so, has anyone had it recently and would you recommend it? Thanks very much.

TOP 5 RESTAURANTS WITHIN TEN BLOCKS

Loss of Lonelyville from the WT is huge - not that the coffee was great but it served a purpose (and was much better than Crossroads IMO). And does anyone think that any of the Indian/Thai/Japanese joints in the hood are worth the walk? (Any love for Sushi Yu from anyone other than me and my bf?) Also, Lia's Soups (the once and future Lia's Ices) - anyone tried the soup?

Best new bars/restaurants in South Slope/Greenwood Hts?

Seems like there's been a lot of new eatery action around 6th Ave between 12th and 20th Sts or so. What are folks' recommendations for, say, a Saturday brunch, midday bite, drink or early supper among the new joints? Thanks much.

Boerum Hill Food Company closed

Yeah and what about that Stumptown roastery? I talked to one of the Mast brothers (of the eponymous chocolate purveyors) at the Brooklyn Flea a couple of weeks ago and he said he thought the roastery was now going to be in Wmsburg. But the Stumptown website's mum. Anyone have an inside track?

Food near Prospect Park West F-train stop?

Sushi Yu on PPW @ 16th St is my go-to.

Where can I find Soyrizo? (Not Chorizo)

I know I've bought it locally (also not sure about the brand but what I've had is riquisimo) - can't remember where but I only shop a few places so it'd have to be either Key Food, Fairway or TJs....
