Innovation: the CHOW Tour

Little Dom's breakfast pizza! Sunnyside up egg, speck and mozzarella. Or, while not necessarily innovative, the egg salad sandwich at Euro Pane in Pasadena. A simple egg salad made creamy with soft boiled eggs. Served with greens and sun dried tomato paste on a slice of great bread of your choice form their bakery! Try rosemary currant.

Any good local food trucks or stands on Maui?

Heading to Maui in May, and I'm curious if there are any must visit trucks or stands for some good grinds. Love the shrimp trucks on Oahu. Not exactly island food, but good nonetheless. Also taking suggestions for best casual plate lunch! Thanks! Bruce

Big Mista's BBQ at your local farmer's markets

Chowhound works! Had to try Big Mista's after discovering the posts.

Went with a couple of buddies of mine for lunch today in Torrance (farmer's market). Asked 'em to hook us up. We were ready to try everything. Got a full rack of ribs, some tri-tip, brisket, pulled pork, potato salad and coleslaw. We couldn't get enough, yet is was too much. Excellent, since we'll have more for tomorrow!

As expressed over and over again, Big Mista rules. This is some of the best dry rub BBQ in SoCal. And to top it off, Neil's a super nice guy. Chatted with him about his start, and how things are going (WELL). This is the third time a chowhound rec has blown my buddies socks off, so consider them Chowhound devotees now as well. BTW, according to the big guy, Mrs. Mista will have Mac n Cheese at El Segundo this Thursday.

Looking for something new & inventive

On the upper end, "The Depot" in downtown Torrance has some nice dishes in a really great environment. I don;t know about "inventive", but they've got some nice original approaches to their dishes.
On the casual end, and damn good...

Los Paisas
Really great, authentic Mexican food at Torrance Blvd. & Western. We lucked on to some incredible fresh rellenos a couple of times at lunch. Just ask! Also. they grill chicken from Thurs to Sun, well seasoned and usually cooked to perfection.

Al Hamra
On Artesia Blvd. in Redondo
EXCELLENT middle eastern all the way around! Super casual strip mall spot.

Mexican wines?

I have to agree that Monte Xanic is not the best. Not my choice. Go with Pijoan or anything from Hugo D'Acosta. You will be really suprised at the amazing quality these "little guys" put out. I have seen Pau Pijoan's facility, and it is humble! Great wine though!

Wine refrigerators?

Check with Vinotemp directly in Carson. I got my "scratch and dent" model for 1/5 the retail price and it's in great condition!!!

Need really cheap wines at Trader Joe's or Costco

For white, go TJs "Honeymoon". I think it's a Viognier, and it's damn good in the $4 range.

Best LA Restaurant you can wear Shorts to?

I'll second Mozza. I was told specifically on the phone..."This is Batali's place, of course shorts are OK". I've been in shorts several times, and had damn fine food every visit.

Looking For One of a Kind, Fun, Nutty-Campy Restaurant Experience

Good call. Super Cheesy. But I think it's a Pirate Adventure dinner now. It's in Buena Park

Looking For One of a Kind, Fun, Nutty-Campy Restaurant Experience

I'll "third" Tokyo Delves. Been a while since I've been in, but this is like no other sushi bar. A couple of games of "Lucky Lamps" and the whole restaurant dancing on the chairs (in spite of the "no dancing" signs) and you'll see what we're talking about. And this goes way back, but I sure do miss the Sake Cocktail guy!

Cantinas Please

That is a bummer. Would have been a nice choice to see before it's closing. But if I had that kind of foresight, who knows where I'd be right now!

Cantinas Please

No, actually the place I had gone to was not historic or that old.
It had an authentic, yet more current feel to it.
And the food was excellent. Wish I had more info.
Need to get in touch with old business contacts and see if I can find it.

Cantinas Please

Thanks for the info. Made it to Bar Opera (same as La Opera?), cool historic cantina. My wife is a new fan of Sangria Preparada...rum, fresh lime, soda, red wine, pretty refreshing. I'm looking forward to seeing, eating, drinking, much more on my next trip. This one was far too short! Thanks again everyone..b

Cantinas Please

A couple of years ago I was in DF on business. Our local associates took us to an "authentic" cantina...buy your drinks, and the botanas are complimentary. I will be in Mexico City for two days only this coming week with my wife, and would love to visit another great place. Any cantina recommendations?

AND...I know this should be a separate post, but any must do's in Merida? Any great local food rec's? We will be traveling there next.

EJ Malloys

Still there. Great irish/sports bar. Buffalo wings are excellent. Burgers and sandwiches are good.
Only complaint, service runs hot and cold.

Decent wine bar in Long Beach

Not a whole lot to offer in LB, but...try the Village Tasting Room (ocean blvd. downtown) - great wine selections though not a lot of help from the help - good and cheap snacks - the place has been empty every time we've been there - wonder if it will last? Another option is CasaVino Wine Bar (around the corner for the Vilage Tasting Room) - fun atmosphere - usually good crowd - live music - but the wine list and snacks are not as good as Village Tasting Room.

Two nights, three desires.

not sure, checked the menu...doesn't seem familiar
I'll keep working on it

Two nights, three desires.

Thanks for the info. Blue Ribbon is it! Heck, we'll eat earlier Friday, have some fun and try one of the other options like Florent or Spotted Pig as well!!

Two nights, three desires.

Good point...looking for options. I remember seeing a morning show segment with a chef from a latin or mexican restaurant where the food looked very interesting and good. Can't remember the name...Tia Juana's something...ring any bells?...if so, is it a good restaurant?

Two nights, three desires.

Appears there's an overall "tiredness" of things Batali? We had a great experience here at Pizzeria Mozza, and will be back. But, I'm always simply on the lookout for a great meal. If we get the chance to check out Vinoteco we will report...THANKS

Two nights, three desires.

I have now been reading a lot about Blue Ribbon. I think we'll give this a try. Quintessential late night fills the bill. Batali's not a requirement, just a thought, so I thank you for your other suggestions. And I encourage other responses if there's something special on your list. Thanks much for the time and suggestions.

Two nights, three desires.

Yep, 11 is just our arrival. Who knows where NY will take us. Simply looking forward to dining late, whatever the time may be (L.A.'s all tucked in too early). Thanks for the rec in the Meatpacking district. Heard a lot about it, this would give us a chance to check it out. Thanks again.

Two nights, three desires.

Will be in Manhattan the beginning of Aug (Thurs and Fri nights), and would like recommendations for my three desires.

1. Will be arriving in the city pretty late on Thursday (11pm), and would like a "classic" New York late night meal. What are the "must-do's"?

2. Then, looking for a good meal for Friday night. Around $100 per person, nothing too crazy. Been to Mozza in L.A., was thinking about one of Batali's places (any chance of a res for 2?). Completely open to type of food.

3. Staying at the Four Points Chelsea...any local wine bars with great wines and light snacks?

Thanks in advance. Bruce

Mozza Pizzeria - Perceptor's Report

A bar seat is typically not legal for those under 21 anyway.

Edible Breakfast, Convention Center

The Pantry...open round the clock, and never had a problem getting a seat.

Chow recs in Long Beach

Just north on PCH is Green Field, a Brasilian Churrascaria. A very Brasilian feel. Don't let the "all you can eat" part scare you away from a unique, fun, and tasty dining experience. They have a huge salad bar, and great cuts of grilled meat are brought to your table and served from the skewer.

Looking for an UNUSUAL restaurant

How about a Brasilian Churrascaria? All you can eat grilled meats served from the skewer to your plate. Green Field in Long Beach has a large room, and large tables for bigger groups and is not nearly as pricey as Fogo de Chao in BH. These are truly good cuts of meat, and the restaurant is a pretty accurate picture of the experience in Brasil.

Romantic dinner with French BF

Not been to Lucques, but AOC gets my vote. While not being overtly romantic, it's still a sweet spot. We went with two couples, love the ambience, had plenty of cheese, food, and two bottles of excellent wine for $320 with tip.

Meat Lover ISO Outrageous Chicago Meat Experience

Love the churrascaria experience, but agreed, the salt leaves me choking for water in the middle of the night! I've had Vietnamese, but nothing quite like this suggestion. Thanks much, it's on my list.

Meat Lover ISO Outrageous Chicago Meat Experience

Hot Doug's is on the list! This sounds fantastic. I'm married to a Brasilian, so the churrascaria is a very familiar thing. We now have a Fogo de Chao in L.A., it has to be the best of the bunch!
