Liver

Just one more thing that some servers (wait staff) will caution you about, not so much here in Toronto but in the U.S. it's reached epidemic proportions....I like meat rare and in the case of prime rib particularly "bleu|", eggs lightly over, caesar salad.with raw egg.and one of my favourites Steak Tartare...In many cases there are warnings printed on some menu's on others where it's not printed, servers are required to tell you. Liver is actually eaten raw is some cultures...I don't go that far but sometimes it's too well done and resembles shoe leather...my belly and my consequences, I accept that..

Farfel Casserole recipe needed

Hi and thanks, but am not wanting to use a tomato base moisture as it is being served as a side with a heavily spiced Brisket...thinking more along the line of caramelized
onion and mushroom, but the base and the amount of liquid has me puzzled, have neverever made Farfel...anyone have anything to say about this mixture?

Rose City Kitchen: Looks Yummy!!

I agree..poutine..with all this new stuff poured over it just kills the original which I do like sans curds or as we used to call it "chips & gravy" in the 1950's...

Where to buy grits?

Once again, I buy Grits in Savannah when I visit, but I did a check of 'southern grits' on Amazon and you can buy all sorts of Grits from different companies so that would be my first suggestion. I wouldn't rule out some other possible places like Fiesta Farms, Big Carrot or other like-minded shops (call them first to save yourself a trip)....Did you get to try Cheese Grits while you were away? They are my current 'fave' when I'm in the South. Amazing!!!

Cross-Border Grocery Shopping

Wasn't able to get to Amherst (N.Y. state) for the TRADER JOE'S opening but did manage to get to one in Florida a few weeks ago and LOVED IT!!! Lots of neat stuff under their own name, best dried mango in pkgs I've ever had...no sulphites etc...great jam, their own French roast Coffeee....only thing missing was a 'hot bar''...prepared food to go, kind of surprised me...I thought it would be more like Whole Foods/Wegmans but it's not. I will try to visit (Amherst location) when we get back to Toronto..

Dim Sum in Sunny Isles

Chef Ho closed in late December 2013, however there's a note saying that the place is now rented and it will be SEAFOOD.

Where to buy high end appliances since as Bosch, Miele and Sub-zero?

I do have an open concept...first floor of the house is totally open plan with just a staircase going upstairs to the 2nd and 3rd floors..old Victorian (1906) renovated......that's good point you brought up LexiFireply, thanks...

Where to buy high end appliances since as Bosch, Miele and Sub-zero?

yes, I do but the Fan is still on, I'd check it now but I'm away for the winter, almost certain that the Fan goes on the minute the oven is being used, I don't even use the convection...

Mine is the same but Bosch, count your lucky stars but as I say, mine was/is a costly mistake in purchasing.

thanks for the suggestion but it's more likely to be Steely Dan or the Doobie Bros.

NO the Fan is only on when the Oven is on (and at any temperature). I have 2 radio speakers mounted in my kitchen, there is no way I can have them on and listen to the radio when the Oven is roasting, that's how noisy and loud the Fan is! Multiply that by 3 or 4 hours (ie roasting a big Turkey/Roast Beef )and it's headache time..I just hate being in the kitchen while the oven is on....

Thai for dinner at Yonge and St. Clair?

BUO THAI is still the best by far...it's at Avenue Road and Davenport (NW) prices still reasonable, prompt and courteous service and a nice quiet atmosphere...meter parking after rush hour on Davenport. Have gone to Taste of Thai a couple of times since the last post and to my mind, no comparision...it feels like éat and get out' instead of a place to enjoy your meal...

Great soups...high end to low end

forgot about the Dirty Bagel.....and all this time I thought it was etched in my brain! When we ate there I think I only ate two things, Blintzes / Lung & Liver(!!) .. Love Mushroom Barley at United Bakers as well...

Old School Chinese Restaurant (like China House,RIP)

I too, miss the China House, I grew up with it and have not found any 'old school' places to fill that niche..We also miss Peter's Chung King...have recently had good to excellent food at Szechuan Landscape on Spadina.....but not too many dishes available that I would consider 'old school'...whatever you do...AVOID the Lemon Chicken....gave new meaning to the word 'glutinous! My 'heat' tolerance is way less than it used to be and sometimes it's very, very spicy at Szechuan Landscape and not a huge choice of non-spicy dishes...but it is now our first choice of restaurants downtown where we live........

Great soups...high end to low end

hard to do better than United Bakers( my personal favourite) but the parking lot is like demolition derby and the pedestrians will walk right in front of your car without a care in the world...almost like "I dare you to run over me"...New Yorker Deli on Bay Street across from Manulife Centre makes excellent Cabbage Borscht.but have never had any other kind of soup so can't vouch for others...

Other than Lobster Trap, any other place to have good (simple) lobster?

Diana's Seafood (Lawrence East at Warden)..fabulous, never overcooked Lobster, pleasant service but it is 'pricey'......They also have great Oysters and wonderful fresh Fish. I have not stepped foot in the Lobster Trap for years...perhaps 6 years or more...not clean, filthy carpeting and iceberg salad brown around the edges....way past its prime....

Your favourite grocery store in GTA (chain or otherwise?)

Not stereotypical at all.....it is what it is.....Retail Business, no matter what kind, survives and flourishes where a demand is identified and then fulfilled.....

meatnveg & justxpete......
Absolutely correct.....The demographics of the neighbourhood are what the changes are about...the same as in other areas of any retail business ....with all the ways management can track their 'particular clientele' it's not difficult to switch goods from 'store to store as the need warrants or the demand exists. It's all about where the store will make money and carrying specific items as their particular shoppers desire can mean the difference between profit/loss.

Your favourite grocery store in GTA (chain or otherwise?)

'rebranding' at the (Dupont) Loblaws is underway...no name change but taking out the so-called Jewish section (??) and converting to 'Portugese'....will I make the change to the Forest Hill (St. Clair) branch...not likely..it's a very minimal part of my regular shopping except near the Jewish holidays when I do need some stuff, but I'll go out of my way and go 'up north' before I'll switch to FH....way too big, too impersonal and I simply don't like shopping there...

Theee best crispy beef in the GTA

Embee....once again...spot on!
I have heard that Peter opened up somewhere in the 'north end' but not one person has found out where..have you heard that 'rumour'? I still don't understand how Peter just up and closed so suddenly..we were very friendly, he knew my kids when they were little and subsequently all of our friends. We used his place over the years for big celebrations sometimes as many as 3 tables of eight and he just closed up and was gone..such a shame. Do you remember "Danny from the old Sea Hi downtown?

Interestingly enough...there seems to be no love for Loblaws, I confess to still using my local (Dupont & Christie)as a my 'primary', but have augmented it with Sobey's (Dupont) and Fiesta Farms and even use the dreaded Metro at Bloor & Walmer. I am in the north end of the Annex....these stores are very convenient for me BUT changes are afoot once again...Loblaws is about to do yet another 'rebranding' (one longtime(Dupont) employee has just told me this). Not sure if this means just the Dupont branch or going to be chainwide...Will post if I hear more......also use Nortown and both Grande Cheese(Orfus Rd.) & Mendel's(Kensington)...

Where to buy good quality stainless steel flatware in GTA or online

still think that Winners is the best place for PADERNO cutlery ....I prefer them over any other brand but, CAYNES also carry a very good brand called "SPLENDIDE" (sp?).
A word of caution, buy 2 sets of 4 (PADERNO) at the same time because they sell out very quickly because of the great price and can be hard to find, even if you go back two days later...

Ace's Frozen Bake Your Own's - thoughts?

I use the Ace 'mini' Frozen Baguettes regularly...always have the 3 pack in my freezer...couldn't be easier..use them to accompany a number of things..soup,spaghetti, beef stew, chilli and in a pinch make garlic bread with them. I do think they compare vey well to the fresh one and the bonus is that I always have them on hand..

I saw some boxes at Fiesta Farms yesterday afternoon.

Are the New Dills out yet? (and where?)

Thanks 'jayt90'...tis true, particularly at this time of year 'all of the cukes' are imported..there are no local cukes...that being said, am glad to hear that you have tried the Strub's. I find the same thing..once the jar is opened they do begin to age and get soggy.. Strub's are my least favourite but if that's all there is I'll be buying at least one jar for now....Nathan's half sour/new have become number one for me.....

Which TO/GTA restaurants would you trek 40 minutes out of your way to visit?

Since we live in/near The Annex...it can be quite the trek to go to "Diana's Seafood"..particularly since we like to eat somewhat on the early side 6:30 or so but we do like it so much that we just grin and bear the schlep up there!!!.....

Which restaurants do you visit most frequently?

Pastis, The Regency (Indian Food), Buo Thai, Stockyards, Corner House, Pasta Bar.
Cantine is my 'usual' and frequent lunch (not dinner) place with friends.. it's in my neighbourhood so it's close, comfortable and convenient.
