blintzes for brunch/lunch in Toronto
HA HA! My 'bad'...I totally zoned out on that...I am in that area at least twice a , week and am thrilled to see someone actually doing well in that location, I know that "What A Bagel" was a hard act to follow....Have been going to Hartman's specifically for their choice in Salami (Mehedrin brand..really good) and also Hot Dogs..lots of good looking prepared foods as well...the plus for me..the Staff is very cordial and obliging...sometimes not the case in other places on the "Bathurst Strip"..That doesn't include Daiter's because they are super nice!!!
blintzes for brunch/lunch in Toronto
DAITERS make decent blintzes as well...not sure if you could eat them at their newly(?) established 'snack/panini' Bar......but you can buy them 'fresh' and take them home to eat.....I don't know if HARTMAN'S across the street from Daiter's makes them but you could have a look in there if you're in that area..
Best whole peanuts?
'PICKARDS PEANUTS'....in /near St. Jacob's, Ontario...terrific store with all kinds of peanuts..nice outing at this time of year....Not sure if they have a website.....
Anyone know about "RUSH HOUR"??
I keep passing by this restaurant on Dufferin south of Davenport..in fact passed it tonight, lots of people dining outside on the Patio, some people inside.....since I pass it frequently and it is sort of 'neighbourhood' for us I'm wondering has anyone eaten there and what did you think about the Food? Looking to take a brother-in-law for a B'day dinner, he does live in the neighbourhood, so is it a 'find'???
where to buy brisket
Both of these great butchers have now left the Loblaws at Dupont and Christie, pretty sure that Craig is at the new Loblaws (Portland Street...downtown) don't know where "Carmelo (not Paul my name mistake), as I said previously went). The meat mgr at Christie is rude/unhelpful and downright nasty...if he is the only one there I will not order anything from him and yes, I have complained in writing to management twice. Three times and I switch stores..it's that bad!
Pop-up garden centres in Toronto
I also recommend FIESTA FARMS as well as the garden centre in the parking lot at Dufferin Mall...both carry stuff you don't always see at other Garden Centres...just remembered another place but forgot the name...it's on Caledonia (west side) just north of Davenport..particularly for tomatoes and other Italian herbs etc... I do a lot of shopping at all of these places, the plants are always in good condition... kept well hydrated and looked after unlike some of the bigger places like Home Depot, Canadian Tire etc....
Salted Caramels.....I want these now!!
peppermint pate....what a good idea and Brickworks Market is quite close to us so it's a terrific suggestion and dare I say...'a done deal'! many thanks...
Salted Caramels.....I want these now!!
No, they were plain....I could try the ones at Soma, but only as a second choice..thanks.
Salted Caramels.....I want these now!!
I just finished an amazing Easter Treat....first time for me..never had these 'Salty Caramels'..am I the last one in the city to eat these? A friend made some of them....said they were hell on wheels to 'wrap' (she did about 200) and she's never going to do it again! WHERE can I buy some?
Time needed to Reheat Brisket?
thanks so much...am just about finished all I can 'prep' for today..so here's to tomorrow..Happy Passover to those of us who celebrate and to those who celebrate Easter...Have a Lovely Easter! I'm celebrating both, cooking for us and eating at a good friend's on Sunday...she always threatens to serve the Easter Rabbit..so far that hasn't happened!!
Time needed to Reheat Brisket?
I cooked and sliced the Brisket on Tuesday and stored it covered with foil and with the 'gravy' in the fridge....shall I loosely cover it with foil (the gravy only comes halfway up the pan), let it come to room temperature and reheat covered at 300F? I never cooked a 'single' brisket before, always used a 'double' which is what my mother used..more fat, but to me a juicier cut, this Brisket was super lean so I got a bit freaked out.... thanks to all who replied...
Time needed to Reheat Brisket?
I have about 7 pounds of sliced, cooked Brisket in a pyrex dish..how long and at what temperature should it take to be table ready ? Is it possible to overcook it?....I need help!!
Looking for Shun brand kitchen knives
SHUN Knives are available at "Internet Kitchen Store" on north side of Eglinton West, west of Duplex Avene...they do have a really good website...and agree you must go in person to get the 'feel'. Owner is very obliging.

ISO fresh nutmeg in Central TO
Try some of the West Indian stores, probably some on Bloor west of Bathurst, or on Eglinton Avenue West around Oakwood, certainly should be available without a problem at several stores in Kensington Market. Fiesta Farms on Christie is possible as well..
Yogourt (machine type) places in midtown..
Hey Folks..I'm happy to hear that...about "DQ" well it's never been one of my frequent flyer destinations, perhaps once or twice a summer although my husband tells me that the one at Pottery Road may have been renovated (when the road was fixed after the collapse) so I'll go for one or two sundaes...Gelato, pretty much a 'purist' no weird flavours for me..Blood Orange, Lemon, Coconut & Mango do the trick!!! Thanks to all for your 'input'.....
Yogourt (machine type) places in midtown..
Yongeman...yah kinda.....I live in the north end of the Annex..midtown for me is south of Eglinton (kinda?) north of College (kinda)...I DO venture outside my hood...but convenience is high on my list!! Hoping that 'your' winter remains when I return next week...(see post below)..I will certainly look up both 'Yogurty's & Menchies) ...thanks!!
Yogourt (machine type) places in midtown..
Since spending some time in Florida this winter I've become addicted to "Pinkberry's" Machine Yogourt with a few basic flavours and lots of Toppings & Fruit to add on top...I've been out of the loop in TO....do we have these places? ( Midtown is my preference)...
Thai Plate
It's a gem of a place, frequented by lots of Baycrest Centre employees at Lunchtime. It's lovely and am glad you posted..I don't know how well they do in the evening but they've managed to hold on for several years and they are well deserving of more patronage, particularly at night...Parking is easy, price is reasonable and the Staff very helpful. I don't know/care if it's authentic, but it's 'good' and it's 'freshly made'..that's a real plus in my book....
Looking for a big brisket
I don't see why not...I've often shopped /done errands after shopping at Sobey's and purchasing the required amount for free parking and never been questioned by the parking attendant.
*
My brother -in- law loves FH Loblaws he thinks it's better than 'my' store...each to his /her own eh?
Looking for a big brisket
The Loblaws Forest Hill is on the north side of St.Clair West, just East of Bathurst street (at traffic light). It's a huge store and I don't find it 'user' friendly.
Sobey's parking lot can be entered off St.Clair , there's a traffic light East of Yonge BUT for some reason, the entrance is closed off at times, it's easier to go to their 'other' entrance on Pleasant Blvd (1 block South of St.Clair on the North side of Pleasant) You have to pay for parking but you get it free when you spend $15. at Sobey's..keep your receipt.
Looking for a big brisket
Tell me about it!!! I am in Jamaica but coming home for Passover....I get my Brisket (usually a 'double' and about 9+ lbs) from 'my' Loblaws at Dupont & Christie... Not sure if this will work out this year, 'my'wonderful Butcher went to the 'Portland' Loblaws just before I left...and I was also told (but not from him) that Dupont Branch was going to have a major change early in the new year...I'm hoping that was a rumour...I will NOT shop at the Forest Hill Branch...I will a) either call him (Craig) or b) try the St. Clair West Sobeys..have had 'some luck' at that store previously.
p.s. I HATE brisket!!
Thai food delivery to Yorkville
You're very lucky, there is a very good Thai Restaurant on Avenue Road at Davenport(near the NW corner)... BUO THAI is quite good, we live in the neighbourhood and it is our 'go to'. I don't remember if they have 'delivery' because we often eat in or pick up but I 'think' they do, particularly in the nearby area...give them a call, they are most gracious and obliging..BTW they are not expensive...
Restaurant around Yonge and Bloor
You could park at the Manulife (Bay & Bloor) and have dinner upstairs at the 'Bloor Street Diner'...there are two parts to the restaurant, at one end is the more casual Cafe which overlooks Bay Street and can be noisy because the tables are close together but has a decent, if unexciting menu or you can 'dine' in the more formal front part of the restaurant, which is quite good and has a decent menu not overpriced for the area. The wait staff is very good, the room itself is quite traditional, I think the wine list is ok but since husband and I do not drink I can't say anything about the pricing etc. I think it's a good choice and the walk over to the Panasonic is not far.....
Best Ruben Sandwich in Toronto?
Coleman's on Bathurst has been closed for quite a while and it's a mercy...the last couple of years it was like 'Desolation Row' as Bob Dylan might say...In its heyday it was a pretty good deli...
Tongue
I would try calling NORTOWN on Eglinton at Bathurst...not sure if they would have it but worth a try..also YITZ's Deli on Eglinton at Avenue Road, perhaps even KATZ'S Deli on Dufferin south of Yorkdale...Agree with 'flying 101' re Deli's as above...Since I live in midtown the places I mentioned are 'closer' to my house...
Looking for "GOOD SEASONINGS" (pkg. Salad Dressings)..in Toronto
I've been away all winter in Florida and have been using these wonderful 'salad dressings' that you mix with oil, vinegar & water, they're available in just about all of the Supermarkets here BUT as I recall not available in Canada...Has that changed/has anyone seen them around TO? Website was not helpful at all....
Sending chocolates to someone in Ottawa
If not too late....try two places....
suite88Chocolatier
They are in Montreal, I received some as a gift and they were incredible...they do have a website...I had 'truffles' and praline-type things...amazing...
I also go to Wakefield, Quebec frequently and shop at La Confiserie, they also have chocolate...IMO they have the BEST fudge of anywhere in Canada or the U.S. that I have ever had ( I have not had their Chocolates) ! I order ...from them and they ship to me in Toronto..., no problem at all....
Here's their website....... www.LaConfiserie.ca
Szcheuwan/Cantonese chinese restaurant 'near' Aventura
Hey you folks....'aynrandgirl', 'Frodnesor' and 'mialebven'....I am so sorry to be leaving soon as a visit to "LUNG GONG" seems to be in the cards for next year's stay in Florida...the review sounds fabulous, seriously wonderful. The 'distance' from here seems somewhat daunting (at this point in time)...we're from downtown Toronto and for going up to the nether reaches of Toronto for what is now...the absolute...I've been told, are 'now' the places to go in our town for the best and most authentic Chinese...we have a huge Chinese population and it's for the most part, where many Asians (Chinese, Japanese) are living/moving to...real estate in Toronto, particularly downtown is simply out of sight costwise for most of the 'lavish' Banquet Halls (weddings) and housing and restaurants etc are moving to our 'huge' suburbs....it's a trek that's for certain.....All this is 'my' lengthy way of saying , even 'tho LUNG GONG is not that far from us here..we've run out of time......sooo thanks most sincerely for 'sharing' your thoughts & places....all things being equal and well....we'll be back and Lung Gong will be one of our first Chinese meal destinations...
p.s. have a look at the Toronto CH board.....it is a very, very busy board...and most interesting to see some of the discussions & recommendations...
Compare oysters
Bigstu99.....thanks for the 'oyster' heads up....Husband wants to stick with Southport.....I think it's that old east coast-Boston kinda thing...feels kinda like "Cheers" ..only oysters
