Wow. Again, I want to thank everyone for their contributions.
Our economic situation has improved somewhat, but I still think we (and many others) can benefit from all of these awesome suggestions. I'm still reviewing them as we speak!

Recruiting All Ideas for Cheap Homemade Dinners!

Actually, I'm not quite sure that we ever have, as we tend to stay away from oatmeal anyway! : P
But, I promise, if I run across it, I will try it sometime.

When Did Omelets Become Fairly Common in American Home Cooking?

Here's my 2 cents: In the movie "Sabrina" (1954, I believe), Audrey Hepburn goes to cooking school in France, brings back her expertise and training to crack eggs to make an omelet for Humphrey Bogart.

Broguiere's Nog Sightings?

Have been looking for it at Gerrard's Market in Redlands. They've been saying they have not had a single shipment yet, something about a shortage?
Went there today for something else, just thought we'd ask one more time. The manager said no.
BUT -
Just then, a guy came up behind him. The manager said, "Ask him, he's the delivery man". The delivery man said, "You want the eggnog? I've got a crate right here!"
AAAHHHHHH!!! Angels singing!!!!
We got the very first bottle of the year from Gerrard's, fresh from the crate!!!!
SCORE!!!!!

Thank you, Art! I'll try it soon.

Anyone have experience with Schwan's (food truck) [moved from General Topics]

Yeah, what happened was, my sister and I visited her credit union, and the truck happened to be parked in the lot, maybe the driver had a quick transaction to make, or someone in the building had ordered something. That's how it happened. Purely by chance.
We asked him what he had, he handed us an order book. We took a quick look, asked him if he had this or that, and he proceeded to pull the items out of different parts of the truck, kind of like an ice cream man. Everything was frozen.
We gave him cash, we don't remember how he actually handled the sale.

How are your knife skills?

See now, THAT's why you won't ever catch me with a big, sharp knife!!!!
EEEKKK!!!! LOL

How are your knife skills?

I too will use a big chef's knife on very specific occasions (like cutting up potatoes, as you did).
But that is rare for me, and I don't use the knife "the right way", with all that rocking of the knife back and forth, etc. I've tried the "right way", and it feels extremely uncomfortable - just not for me.

How are your knife skills?

sandylc, I also like to use kitchen shears to cut herbs (cilantro, parsley, etc.), and they are also handy for cutting bacon into lardons for recipes.

How are your knife skills?

Thanks Kajikit, I don't feel like I'm the only one now.
: )

How are your knife skills?

Thank you for your suggestion, cowboyardee, but I have very small hands, and I've been using a steak knife for so long, I actually think an offset bread knife would feel awkward to use!
Good idea, though.

How are your knife skills?

First of all, I have to say that I have a phobia of sharp knives, needles, etc. The thought of getting cut with a sharp knife just sends me over the edge. I must have been run through in a war in a different life.
And for those of you who are tempted to tell me, "If the knife is sharp, the less chance you have of cutting yourself", save your breath. It ain't gonna happen.
I'd probably be tempted, in a wierd way, to actually WANT to cut myself, the same way that people look over the edge of a tall building and "want" to jump off.
That having been said, I actually do a (decent) job of cutting onions and veggies using just (don't laugh) a steak knife.
And I've been cooking for 40 years.
It's good enough for me.

Annual Broguiere's Egg Nog Sighting Thread

How silly of me!
I should have known the 'Hounds have already addressed this most important subject!
: )

Annual Broguiere's Egg Nog Sighting Thread

Just thought I'd bump this thread to revive it for 2011. It's about that time!

Are King Crab Legs cooked fresh at Alaska restaurants?

So - there's no real meat in the body? At all?

anyplace that is doing: Smörgåsbord

"I grew up attending Danish and Swedish Lutheran Church smorgasbord events."
Any of those around San Diego, Orange County, or the greater Los Angeles area? How would one find out about them, and which are the best? And could anyone attend?

anyplace that is doing: Smörgåsbord

I miss Gustav Anders, also!!
About the only places that I know of, are a couple of restaurants up in Solvang, which is a LONG drive for you!
I'm sure someone else knows of something much closer.

San Luis Obispo: Madonna Inn restaurant and cafe review

Yes, our family went there once upon a time on the way to the Monterey area. Stayed there (one of the fairy tale rooms, not a rock room) for a night. We enjoyed it!!!
Had some kind of pastry/cake in the Copper Cafe the next morning before heading out. It was huge, rich, and delicious.
You know, I don't know how to explain the Madonna Inn - without heading too much off topic, it should be experienced at least once, if you are in the area. It is truly a one of a kind place.
- Tip: check out the men's restroom, even if you are not a man.

Yeah, who cares!!!
What I had was yummy.

Anyone have experience with Schwan's (food truck) [moved from General Topics]

My sister and I happened upon a Schwan's truck about a month ago in a parking lot. We had never tried their stuff, but had always wanted to. We got two items: their Chicken Cordon Bleu and Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Ice Cream.
The chicken was very tasty, and since we cook all the time, this was a treat, because we didn't have to make something so fancy for ourselves - it was already done.
The ice cream is so delicious and rich, it's like crack!

What's the best thing you've ever received trick-or-treating?

Oh yes, that is so fun. We've done that once or twice.
I remember one family, wheeling up their (mother? grandmother?) in her wheelchair and saying, "Trick or Treat!!" and her receiving candy in her little bag.
That is one of my best memories.

Awesome Restaurants in Riverside?

Oh, so sorry to hear that, ferrett1.
I haven't been there in a year or two, so it may have gone down.
Did you get a chance to visit the Mission Inn?
