Kitchen on Common (Belmont)

Yes, after hearing great things about kitchen on common, I will definitely make a point to stop by at one point (now knowing the time restrictions) - probably on a week night. I think it is great that the chef is setting his own hours and making sure he has time to spend with his children, I was just surprised that he stopped serving so early on a Saturday evening, but clearly he has a better idea of his market than I do!

My husband and I ended up at Harvest instead and had a lovely meal - especially since we were able to put a gift certificate to good use!

Kitchen on Common (Belmont)

Just tried to make a reservation based on the great feedback, but discovered that they do not seat after 8:30pm - on a Saturday!!

anniversary dinner advice - your favorites?

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all your suggestions for our anniversary dinner. My husband and I pushed up our dinner to Saturday night instead of Monday and enjoyed a wonderful evening at Salts. The food was absolutely delicious and the evening memorable. Thanks again!

Good Breakfast Places in the South End?

I second the vote for Union - between the extremely affordable prix-fixe menu and the ability to make reservations, its a great brunch option and quite tasty. Enjoy!

Corporate training dinner spot for large group - thoughts??

Thanks - I'll check all of these out!

Corporate training dinner spot for large group - thoughts??

It is a dinner and we're looking at an overall budget of $4,000 for everything - food, drinks, tax, gratuity, AV, room rental, etc. and ideally need to incorporate some sort of interesting concept, such as a wine tasting or the like. Thanks!

Corporate training dinner spot for large group - thoughts??

Hi Everyone, I'm in the midst of planning a corporate training dinner for roughly 40 people and am rapidly exhausting options for a restaurant/hotel with a private dining room in boston proper (or cambridge) that has really interesting, dynamic space without a huge ticket price. The space needs to be completely private and AV friendly so that we can make a presentation with projector, etc. Any thoughts? Thanks for your help!

Friday night Dinner in Boston

one more thing - neptune is tiny and i dont think they take reservations so that my influence your decision for a friday night dinner...

Friday night Dinner in Boston

I had dinner at Neptune Oyster recently (my first experience there) and loved it. The atmosphere is both cozy and energetic and the food was delicious - super fresh oysters that tasted perfectly briny as though they'd just been harvested. And great seafood with really interesting flavor combintations - the marlin was outstanding.

If you want a true-to-form steak house meal, Abe & Louies is always good for that. And on the one occasion that I've been to Mama Maria's, it was delicious. I also love the townhouse feel of the space...very much like JoJo in New York. I've not been to Taranta or Troquet, though Troquet consistently gets raves on this board and its definitely high up on my list of "to try" restaurants.

Enjoy your night out on the town!

anniversary dinner advice - your favorites?

Thanks, everyone - all great ideas. While I've been to many of the restaurants mentioned above, I may lean toward Cambridge since we've just moved to Arlington from Brookline...its a good excuse to check out the scene on our side of the river!

Thoughts on Oleana vs. the $50 tasting menu at EVOO? I do love tasting menus. Salts had been on the top of the list until I discovered it was closed on Mondays. Should we also put TW Food on the radar? The menu and tasting menu options look interesting...

Thanks again!

anniversary dinner advice - your favorites?

I know that everyone and their mother has posted inquiring about special occasion dining, but with so many new restaurants having opened in Boston in the last 6 months, I'm curious as to what you'd recommend as both the penultimate special occasion meal in Boston, as well as where you'd want to go for a wonderful, celebratory meal that doesnt necessarily blow the bank.

I do have a small ulterior motive here: my husband and I are celebrating our 2nd anniversary on Monday and, having scrapped plans to go away this weekend, we now want to go out for a delicious dinner that evening. While we're not incredibly budgetarily minded, I dont think the tasting menu at No. 9 Park or dinner at L'Espalier is in the cards for a Monday evening...

Thanks everyone!

How do you eat your smoked salmon?

in looking for new options for portable bring-to-work-lunches, a friend suggested smoked salmon. i'd never thought of bringing it for lunch, but now i cannot get enough. lately i've been eating it on wheat toast topped with goat cheese that has been mixed with chopped herbs (thyme and oregano have been my herbs of choice of late), then layered with smoked salmon and thinly sliced cucumbers. its a great twist on the bagel/lox breakfast option...

Telepan tomorrow - what to order?

Hi All, after much back and forth trying to select a restaurant, my sister and I have finally settled upon Telepan for a celebratory meal tomorrow evening. We're planning on doing the five course tasting menu, which I believe allows us to pick one dish per "section" of the menu. Any great suggestions on what to order? Would love your thoughts ~ thanks!

Weekend in Boston

the south end has a host of restaurants that offer great eats at somewhat reasonable prices. if you dont mind waiting (possibly for hours!), toro is a fabulous tapas joint on washington street in the south end. the atmosphere is bustling, to say the least, and the food is fantastic. the franklin cafe on shawmut street also has a no reservation policy, so the lines can be long, but the atmpshere is fun, the food is great and the crowd is lively. the butcher shop on tremont is great for a few glasses of wine and a cheese plate - perhaps before dinner or as an afternoon stop over? Where will you be staying? There are so many fun areas to explore....

Whole Foods is coming to Glastonbury and Darien, CT

i hear that, for darien, they're taking over the old HOJOs space, but not until 2009...

On the hunt for fabulous saturday night dinner in NYC

Thank you all for your input - I now have a great list for next time I visit NYC! After lots of deliberation, we've settled on Telepan for our dinner in two weeks. I'll be sure to let you all know what we think after what we hope will be a wonderful meal!

Fish without residual odor?

I love fish, but rarely cook it in my small apartment because the odor seems to permeate everything and linger for days, even when baking an inoccuous fish like talapia. Any suggestions as to a) which types of fish do not give off such a strong funk and b) how to get around the odor if I do go about cooking it? Any advice, recipe suggestions or air freshening ideas would be appreciated (despite what anyone may say, room/bacteria sprays do not work!). Thanks.

On the hunt for fabulous saturday night dinner in NYC

thanks for your insight. I think we've already eliminated both Morimoto and Buddakan, as we both feel we can go to those restaurants on an evening that is not a "special" dinner. This search becomes more and more difficult because we're trying to find a restaurant at which neither of us have ever dined. I've eaten at Otto several times and really love the food, but it also is a little casual and we've both been there. I will definitely look into Degustation, however. Thank you for the suggestion! And perhaps we'll reconsider Grammercy with the new chefs. I'll be sure to give you all a full report after our dinner on March 24th- at whichever restaurant we select - and until then would love to continue to hash out ideas and steal suggestions. We're aiming to make a reservation at the beginning of next week...thanks again!

Meat by mail?

We received a gift certificate for Omaha Steaks last fall and ordered some filets in December...cooked them in January (highly seasoned and grilled on a grill pan in our apt with a mustard/port reduction glaze). We were incredibly disappointed with the quality, taste and lack of flavor ~ they were mediocre at best. I've heard Omaha has tasty burgers, but for good quality meat, I recommend looking elsewhere.

On the hunt for fabulous saturday night dinner in NYC

Thank you for your suggestions! I've been to Jean Georges, which was wonderful, but will have to do some research about Cru as I dont know much about it. And you've both confirmed my hunch that L'impero should rank high on our list of contenders. Telepan sounds delicious too - thanks for the tips on what to order should we head there. Any other must hit destinations? Thanks again...

On the hunt for fabulous saturday night dinner in NYC

As an ex-New Yorker now living in Boston, I like to get down to the city as often as possible to visit friends and family and to, of course, experience the culinary scene that is unlike anything elsewhere in the country. I come from a long line of foodies and truly appreciate a good meal.

About two years ago, my sister (who lives in Manhattan) and I started a new Christmas tradition whereby we spend a weekend in the other's respective city and treat the guest to an outstanding meal in lieu of a traditional gift. We're looking for great suggestions for this year's NYC dinner in March and are trying to narrow down the list of contenders - places that have amazing food and a great atmosphere to boot. Would love your advice!

Current restaurants on the list for consideration include: A Voce, Blue Hill, Telepan, Varietal, Morimoto, Alto, Gotham Bar & Grill (still havent been), L'impero and Buddakan.

But we're open to suggestions (and lots of them!). We've been very fortunate to have eaten at lots of manhattan favorites such as daniel, bouley, le bernadin, craft, the modern, picholine, grammercy, babbo, the four seasons, le cirque, il mulino, union square cafe, wd~50, nobu, eleven madison park, etc. so those are off the list. Ideally looking for something somewhat new-ish that isnt obscenely expensive (a la per se) but delicious...

Thank you in advance for your help!
